NBC News has learned Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg voted FROM HER HOSPITAL BED to refuse to let the government enforce Pres. Trump's proposed restriction on asylum. The court voted 5-4 to leave a lower court ruling in place that blocks enforcement of the crackdown. @PeteWilliamsNBC

Mueller

'The Justice Department is one of several government entities that would be affected by a partial government shutdown, but not everyone is expected to pack their bags and go home.

While the Justice Department oversees special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, Mueller's office will be able to continue working even if there is a partial government shutdown.

“All employees with the Special Counsel’s Office are considered exempt and will continue their operations in the case of a lapse in appropriations," Special Counsel’s office spokesman Peter Carr told CNN in late November.

The office "is funded from a permanent indefinite appropriation and would be unaffected in the event of a shutdown," a Justice Department spokesperson added. "The appropriation bills before Congress do not impact" the special counsel's office.'

I must be ignorant, but I had no idea the practice of mercenaries was so widespread and so tolerated. Mercenary armies isn’t a good development IMO, on any side.

OK, I need to backtrack a bit. The Senate vote I was following earlier was NOT 'the' vote. It was a vote to open debate on the bill for the CR. Sorry!

It is now 7.10pm in DC. The live feed I just saw showed a mostly empty chamber with no one speaking. Not sure if they're on a dinner break or if debate/caucusing is going on off the floor. Maj Whip Cornyn says he expects debate to go on all night.

Shutdown time is 12 midnight if no deal is struck.

TheClaws · 22/12/2018 00:18

‘Senators agreed to advance a House-passed government funding bill on Friday evening as part of a last-ditch effort to make room for negotiations about how to prevent a partial shutdown that is scheduled to start at midnight.’

Two Dem senators tell me they’ve been told no more votes tonight, and that they will get 24 hours notice before the next vote in the Senate. So that’s it. Shutdown.

Just in: A partial government shutdown is all but guaranteed, as the House of Representatives has adjourned until noon Saturday without an agreement to fund those federal departments and agencies whose funding expires at midnight.

#BREAKING US govt shutdown assured as House adjourns

AcrossthePond55 · 22/12/2018 05:32

The shutdown has officially begun.

MerdedeBrexit · 22/12/2018 05:40

So Trump didn't get his way and as a result the US government is partially shut down. And he is still blaming the Democrats - does he not recall that he was televised saying to Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer: “You want to know something? I’ll take it,” Trump said. “Yes, if we don’t get what we want one way or the other, whether it’s through you, through military, through anything you want to call — I will shut down the government. I am proud to shut down the government. I will take the mantle.” ? And also that he was elected on the basis that he would get Mexico to pay for the wall, which the provisions of the spending bill make clear they won't?
Depressing description from the NYT, as if you didn't already know anyway: www.nytimes.com/2018/12/21/us/politics/trump-shutdown-border-wall.html

To recap: The guy who promised that Mexico would pay for the wall said he'll shut down the government if Americans don't pay for the wall.

And there is footage of DJT saying to Chuck Schumer 'and I won't blame the Democrats'.
Now he is blaming the Democrats.

I feel for all those wage earners who have no idea when they're getting their next pay packet.

I've been following #AngryWHStaffer for ages and I have no idea if he/she is legit or not. However, he/she has been very right for a long time.
If you've got time to waste (surely not at Christmas!?) it's worth catching up on a few of his threads on Twitter and I'm linking his/her blog below. What we can glean from his latest is what we'd all guess anyway. Trump is having a complete meltdown. The Wall is nothing to do with securing borders, and all to do with saving face. Kushner is useless in the ME and pigs might fly before he brings peace to the area. Trump shouts a lot. Mattis resignation has shaken GOP to the core. A shutdown was inevitable.

Here's his/her blog...

What happens in a shutdown.

This is from last January, which was the first time a shutdown happened with one party in control of the Presidency, House and Senate. And here's another one.

The question remains: why does Trump need the Democrats?

This shouldn’t get lost in the avalanche of crazy. The wall we need is between DOJ and the White House. The foundation of our democracy- the rule of law- depends on it.

Josh Campbell
@joshscampbell
This new reporting is a bombshell. The President of the United States shouldn’t be conversing with DOJ about any criminal investigation, let alone one involving his own interests.

“Trump pressed Whitaker on why more wasn't being done to control prosecutors in New York...”

Adam Schiff
@RepAdamSchiff
The President of the United States should not be discussing any criminal case in which he has been implicated with the Acting Attorney General.

This is wrong, unethical and eviscerates post-Watergate policy. Whitaker should not need an ethics opinion to know this is inexcusable.

Most of Trump admin original cabinet is gone. Those who remain tend to share two traits: complicity in plot and nepotism ties.

  • Trump family: Donald, Ivanka, Jared
  • Relatives of the complicit: Chao (McConnell), DeVos (Prince)
  • Complicit in corrupt campaign: Mnuchin, Pence

The makeup and shakeups of the Trump admin are typical of autocracies. Admin is packed with lackeys bound by family ties and/or shared guilt. Makes them easier to control.

Players are moved frequently to create a power vacuum which the main players the family fills.

Over time, the autocrat becomes more insular, and kin ties dominate. That's happening now.

Where Trump differs from other autocrats is in his complete deference to foreigners. He can't be a fascist because he doesn't care about the state. The state is just something to sell.

What you will see is a continuation of their original plan: strip the US down and sell it for parts. The Trump/Kushner family and foreign backers are main beneficiaries.

The GOP has their own plan for a one-party state, using Trump as a vehicle to pack courts, rewrite laws.
