I don't think it's a ridiculous name for a dog on the grounds that it's a person's name, but I've heard that dogs respond best to a two-syllable name. If there's any truth in that, it might be better to go with Kenneth or Kevin for the same sort of "feel."

I’d go with formal name Keith, Keifer for short
