To be angry and feel the Scottish Gov’s Twitter header is an attack on women?

i’d like them to clarify exactly what their definition of “transphobic” is because it seems to have become a slur these days often aimed at anyone but mostly women who are critical of or question in any way the recent upsurge of identity politics. I just feel they’re doing a knee jerk, ignorant, unnecessary huge fuck you to women.

So where is the one for hating women, specifically? Have they made one yet?

GerdaLovesLiIi · 27/11/2018 17:23

Yeah, it's a bit of a stretch to be honest. YABU. But well done for shoe-horning another trans thread into AIBU.

rightreckoner · 27/11/2018 17:26

Tweet here has a good point. This does not look like good governance to me.

TeenTimesTwo · 27/11/2018 17:27

I think YABU.

The full poster talks about harassing people in the streets etc.
You aren't harassing people by asking for a debate, or standing up for single sex toilets, safeguarding of children etc, so that's OK.

Now, if the poster said other things such as you aren't allowed to say that TWAnotW that would be another matter. But it doesn't.

rightreckoner · 27/11/2018 17:28

All of this is transphobic - particularly safeguarding children.

TeenTimesTwo · 27/11/2018 17:30

No it isn't. Some people say it is transphobic. But asserting something doesn't automatically make it so. Smile

VerbeenaBeeks · 27/11/2018 17:33

Calling out any transphobia is a good thing, it's just as unacceptable as racism.
If you actually read the full poster linked, how anyone can have a problem with not wanting trans people to be attacked is beyond me.

mostdays · 27/11/2018 17:34

I do think yabu, yes.

rightreckoner · 27/11/2018 17:55

I know that teen.

But the establishment is supporting organisations who have described all of this as transphobia.

This is timed to coincide with the consultation. This is not a random expression of goodwill.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 27/11/2018 17:56

Blanchedupetitpois you completely rewrote irnbruforlife's points. That's dishonest. She didn't say anything comparable to the points you made.

Comparing race to trans isn't a good tactic. Firstly it doesn't work. Secondly it recalls the case of Rachel Dolezal.

While Caitlyn Jenner was winning Woman of the Year (a preposterous decision) Rachel Dolezal hit the headlines when she was exposed as a white woman who was representing herself as African American and working for the civil liberties group, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

While Rachel was slammed, Caitlyn was lauded - and the scales fell from the eyes of many, many women.

TRAs and their insistence that lesbians should do dick if said dick belongs to a man who identifies as a lesbian are guilty of the most blatant homophobia.

As for transphobia, it's become so devalued that in some circles simply pointing out that people can't change sex or that women don't have a penis qualifies. I no longer give a flying fuck about being accused of transphobia. Just having a biology GCSE can get you in trouble. It's absurd.

rightreckoner · 27/11/2018 17:58

Megan Murphy’s tweets about abuser YV were transphobic. For describing them as him.

rightreckoner · 27/11/2018 17:59

She got kicked off Twitter for those transphobic views.

rightreckoner · 27/11/2018 17:59

Sorry JY not YV. Autocorrect had not a clue what I was hinting at Grin

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 27/11/2018 18:04

That's weird. I replied to a comment, posted it, and it disappeared. That was nearly an hour ago. So I replied again and now both my answers are up. I was on a train when I posted the first time and home when I did the second. Odd...

FamilyOfAliens · 27/11/2018 18:06

I thought most people were now in agreement that the word “transphobic” has become completely devoid of meaning.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 27/11/2018 18:06

Assume you're being sarcastic, rightreckoner. Because if not it's a crazy thing to say.

Badmoonsarising · 27/11/2018 18:15

I’d like to know who was responsible for that header, what their definition of transphobia is, what their views on “terfs” are and what their twitter and Facebook tweets/posts on “transphobia” look like - before i dismiss it as being harmless rather than a calculated, targetted political statement against gender critical folk.

rightreckoner · 27/11/2018 18:29

Course I am prawn. My point was made better by family. Transphobia now means nothing. In fact the one thing it tends not to mean is discrimination against people because they are trans.

Binglebong · 27/11/2018 23:26

If this was a campaign against all forms of bigotry why did they use trans for a header? Why not just "if you're a bigot"? By selecting just one they are promoting that as worse than the others.

Badmoonsarising · 27/11/2018 23:50

Fiona Robertson
@FionaSnp
The SNP's National Women's and Equalities Convener. My own opinions, RTs=/=endorsements, etc. She/her

Of course this is just about random attacks in the street when the SNPs Women’s and Equalities Convenor happily bandies about the term “Terf”.

It's not just a campaign against transphobia. Apparently there's a poster campaign going on against homophobia, transphobia,
racists, disablists, etc and calling it out. Lots of different posters.

Yes, that's what I said. But on the header they are only mentioning transphobic when they could easily use a phrase that would cover all forms of bigotry. By doing it as they have they make it appear that transphobic is the most important one.

Y0uCann0tBeSer10us · 28/11/2018 08:11

I wish I was shocked by the sarcastic and dismissive responses of Fiona Robertson to legitimate concern, but sadly this is the standard I’ve come to expect from the ‘progressive’ Scottish ‘government’.

I am very curious to learn what this new science about sex is, because somehow during a PhD in Biomedical Science and subsequent decades of working in Biomedical research this has passed me by. Indeed most of my medical colleagues are also under the impression that sex is determined by your chromosomes and is immutable. Hormones and surgery can change your outward appearance but not your genetics, body structure or muscle composition for instance, and as such there are very serious discussions to be had about protecting single sex spaces.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 28/11/2018 08:20

So, following that link to the posters available there is still no poster against misogyny? Or misandry?

All the protected characteristics except sex!

Why is that?
