To ask why nobody on MN will say what their hobby is?

So many threads involving time and money spent on either their own or partners hobby, but never any mention of what the hobby is. Perhaps there is some sort of hobby hierarchy that I am unaware of where some hobbies are seen as bragging and some down right embarrassing.

My hobby is baking. 😀 my husband’s hobby is annoying me and (I think) purposely hiding socks because it infuriates me when I just find one in the wash basket!

willthedoctorchaseme · 15/11/2018 11:38

Mine is crochet.

LewisMam · 15/11/2018 11:39

People leave out the specifics to make it less identifying.

Theweasleytwins · 15/11/2018 11:39

Mine is crochet (mainly amigurumi)

Dhs is cleaning the car and making mess for me to clean upHmm

Sallygoroundthemoon · 15/11/2018 11:40

Because saying you like cycling or running is apparently 'outing'. Smile

KeysHairbandNotepad · 15/11/2018 11:41

I don't know why they don't say. 99% of the time I'm sure it's cycling , running or gaming though.

9ofpentangles · 15/11/2018 11:41

Maybe they collect something weird e.g. skulls - or have an unhealthy obsession with something - e.g. serial killers?

BellMcEnd · 15/11/2018 11:42

It really really really annoys me too. I actually met someone on holiday who frequently alluded to her and her DH’s hobbies eg “I insist on having Sunday afternoons as my hobby time” etc etc. I never bothered asking her what it was but talking to her really was like some real life AIBU thread.

BellMcEnd · 15/11/2018 11:43

Oh, and my hobby is going round bastard Tesco [AIBU to think that they should stop bloody moving things around?]

sweeneytoddsrazor · 15/11/2018 11:43

But unless your hobby is something like collecting antique egg cups it really isnt going to be that identifying. 1000s of people do most hobbys

My dh's hobby is designing and building a 15 x 25 ft wooden cabin at the bottom of our garden. When it's finished his hobby will be putting all his Star Wars and Sci-Fi toys in it and having a carpentry studio in order to build and design more things out of wood.

I don't have a hobby Grin

JacquesHammer · 15/11/2018 11:45

It always makes me laugh when someone says "not saying what as it is outing"

Unless your hobby is crochet with lace made from children's tears, you can pretty much assume many other people will do it!

Sport and reading here! (not at the same time!)

extremelymaturecheese · 15/11/2018 11:45

Mine are cross stitch, gardening and Warhammer 40K.

uselessuterus · 15/11/2018 11:45

My hobby is watching Netflix.

KeysHairbandNotepad · 15/11/2018 11:46

I love the idea that people actually say to their oh "I'm going to do my hobby for a couple of hours". I might start saying that then disappear to the bathroom with my molton brown stuff and my kindle for an hour.

extremelymaturecheese · 15/11/2018 11:47

But in all fairness, whenever someone says "it's outing" I assume cycling or golf because the OP is too embarrassed to admit that they or their partner has such expensive hobbies.

SaltedToPerfection · 15/11/2018 11:47

It’s always cycling that must never be mentioned. As if there are only a small handful of people in the world who cycle.

UnRavellingFast · 15/11/2018 11:47

My hobby is drinking wine and watching telly. Is this outing- should I ask my post to be removed?

MatildaTheCat · 15/11/2018 11:47

DH has a hobby which would be too outing to name. It involves long hours walking around carrying a bag full of sticks following a small white ball.

I suspect the usual suspects are running, cycling, fishing, gym, golf.

Men seem to have more hobby time than women. Especially when they have a young family. Hmm

sweeneytoddsrazor · 15/11/2018 11:49

Just realised I didnt say what mine were watching sport and knitting or cross stitch on a regular basis. Also love looking around cathedrals and churches so try to get a couple of weekends away a year to do that.

LucyMorningStar · 15/11/2018 11:49

They do it because it might be outing (honestly you're not that unique) or because it sounds fancier than going to gym/drama class/for a run. That's in my opinion of course.

My hobby (such a stupid posh word) is exercise classes and drawing.

TheFreaksShallInheritTheEarth · 15/11/2018 11:50

I knit: toys, Christmas decorations, scarves, and jumpers for family.

Now you all know who I am, don't you!? Grin

SlowlyShrinking · 15/11/2018 11:50

My hobbies are mumsnetting, and sitting around worrying about stuff I should be doing.

Hezz · 15/11/2018 11:52

It always makes me laugh that they think they are so unique Grin

mushlett · 15/11/2018 11:59

Mine are horse riding and hanging out with my dog, sometimes both at the same time Smile
