To ask why nobody on MN will say what their hobby is?

So many threads involving time and money spent on either their own or partners hobby, but never any mention of what the hobby is. Perhaps there is some sort of hobby hierarchy that I am unaware of where some hobbies are seen as bragging and some down right embarrassing.

OP posts:

I am an afol (adult fan of Lego). There are gazillions of us slowly taking over the world one plastic brick at a time....

BruegeITheElder · 15/11/2018 12:52

So basically, if you want to talk about playing theramin, go ahead. If you want to brag about playing theramin, name-change first.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 15/11/2018 12:56

'Hobby' always sounds a bit sad and nerdish to me. So I don't have any H-things. I like playing the piano (not very well) and have lately done loads of knitting - a nativity set for Gdcs and a lot of little decorations for Gdd's pre school fair.

I've really enjoyed the knitting - apart from anything else it's been a brilliant excuse for ignoring housework.

MumW · 15/11/2018 12:56

I Crochet

StopTheHistrionics · 15/11/2018 12:56

My hobby is getting drunk and repeatedly watching Live Aid.

halfwitpicker · 15/11/2018 12:57

Mine is complaining and creating a bigger chip on my shoulder due to various injustices.

HammerHorror · 15/11/2018 12:59

@UnRavellingFast don't pretend to be me!

MumW · 15/11/2018 13:01

There’s an mner that never says what instrument her dc plays because it’s rare and outing. Dc is apparently genius level on said instrument. Can anyone find Instrument X
Im guessing harp.

grumiosmum · 15/11/2018 13:01

YANBU OP.

Mention of a hobby really gets my goat.

I like gardening and running, but I wouldn't describe them as hobbies!

HammerHorror · 15/11/2018 13:02

@Tinty @wijjy

Is dogging really that outing? According to my mother everyone in her village is at it!!

Maybe specialist dogging with equipment?

TheFreaksShallInheritTheEarth · 15/11/2018 13:03

I just change my username once a week or so. Then I don't have to worry about the little details I share adding up to anything

Me too, Breugel I've had about 20 usernames in the last 5 years. I like yours though, it's good for winter: all those lovely atmospheric snowy scenes!

HashtagTeamRaven · 15/11/2018 13:05

My hobby is skinning my enemies and making them. Into novelty hats.
And reading.

GerdaLovesLiIi · 15/11/2018 13:07

I collect expensive craft equipment, wool, fabric and "ooh look that'll be useful" things. Sometimes I turn them into other things by knitting, sewing, crocheting, or swearing at them whilst drinking gin.

Then I go and wear ridiculous clothes in a rainy field and pretend to be a Tudor (other time periods are available). Also while drinking gin.

LizzieBennettDarcy · 15/11/2018 13:08

I always think it's the embarassment of admitting their DP/DH is one of those cyclists middle aged men wearing skin tight lycra and really shouldn't be. DH plays golf and that clothing is bad enough.

abacucat · 15/11/2018 13:08

My hobby is eating whole tubs of ice cream and then hiding the evidence in the outside bin.

BertrandRussell · 15/11/2018 13:08

If they are talking about their male partner, it’s cycling.

RoboticMary · 15/11/2018 13:09

I don’t have time for any hobbies Sad And I used to have so many! Learning languages, playing violin, dress making... life’s just one endless slog these days!

RoboticMary · 15/11/2018 13:10

@abacucat SNAP!! Hahaha Grin

BertrandRussell · 15/11/2018 13:10

Mine, by the way is searching for the perfect notebook. The one that will enable me to write my book.

Jeanclaudejackety · 15/11/2018 13:12

The Mnetter with the dd and the 'outing instrument' also claims her dd has been working professionally in chosen career/instrument since something like being 9 years old and hangs around with professors or something, honestly the mind boggles!

I once saw someone who was like 'yeah we are very into hiking and skiing, as a family, very outdoorsy.' she was then asked where they like for skiing and she was like 'oh we haven't been able to afford to go for 10 years' so not really a hobby then is it its something you did once Grin

tiggerkid · 15/11/2018 13:12

Learning to play piano and photography are my pursuits in spare time. I like to read too.

Newdadofgirl · 15/11/2018 13:12

I love my hobbies, although at the moment they are more hypothetical hobbies as I tend to spend my evenings playing with my daughter! However when I get time...
I'm a photographer,
I like making jewellery (made my partner's diamond ring!),
I collect British Victorian Stamps,
I collect British Victorian illustrated envelopes,
I collect Georgian Porcelain made in Swansea, and Nantgarw (both places in Wales that made the finest porcelain in Europe!)
I collect ancient antiquities of all sorts,
I practice witchcraft (Templar and Celtic stuff)
I paint Warhammer figures.
Oh... also do mountain biking and walking.
Think that's it...
I still do all of the above but less these days. None of these are as boring as they sound!

BertrandRussell · 15/11/2018 13:13

Actually, if anyone is a theramin player, can they dm me please? I have a question!

BlooperReel · 15/11/2018 13:14

This always makes me laugh too OP. Picking your nose in front of the tv whilst Eastenders is on does NOT count as a hobby you cretins.

JaneJeffer · 15/11/2018 13:15

I imagine them all to be Morris dancers.
