To ask why nobody on MN will say what their hobby is?

So many threads involving time and money spent on either their own or partners hobby, but never any mention of what the hobby is. Perhaps there is some sort of hobby hierarchy that I am unaware of where some hobbies are seen as bragging and some down right embarrassing.

OP posts:

Grown adults do “crafts”!?
What’s wrong with stuff like knitting, painting, woodwork, etc?

SilverySurfer · 15/11/2018 13:54

I couldn't agree more OP and it's usually something mundane like cycling.

UnRavellingFast
My hobby is drinking wine and watching telly. Is this outing- should I ask my post to be removed?

Yes, very outing. OMG I know who you are! Oh, wait, you might be me Grin

Tinty · 15/11/2018 13:59

@BertrandRussell

My DS called me from Uni, on Tuesday, he told me he had found the perfect notebook, it was a one off from America and cost £10. I did ask him if it was made of gold! Grin You know being a poor student and all. He is going to show it to me at Christmas. Smile

My hobbies are crafty things - knitting, painting glass and silk, card making. Dh likes computer gaming and always says his hobby is making me happy (because I told him after a counselling session of mine once that it wasn't his job to make me happy, he decided it could be his hobby. He's very good at it!)

Cromercrab · 15/11/2018 14:02

When is something a hobby and when is it just stuff you do, that you don't have to do to earn a living/stay alive and clean? My 'hobbies', under that definition, would include: studying French, keeping fit (gym classes - spin, pump, that sort of thing), reading, listening to podcasts, gardening, pottering around the house making it look nice, showing more interest in cooking than is merely necessary to keep us all fed, visiting art galleries, gardens and museums, volunteering at a charity shop. We're thinking about getting a puppy and then training and walking the dog will be a hobby, I suppose...

MistressDeeCee · 15/11/2018 14:02

My hobby is dance. I get dressed up according to the dance style, go out there do my thing. 60s/70 Soul, also Swing Dance. It's social, keeps me fit & energised and its good for my mindset.

My hobby is far too frivolous to be up there alongside the cycling and golf-heads, methinks.

Maybe the hobby-hiding is some kind of roundabout I/he's so important" stealth boast...?

Loonoon · 15/11/2018 14:04

I’m doing my hobby atm. It involves a jigsaw puzzle and Judge Rinder. Obv I can’t say anymore......

dancinginthehall · 15/11/2018 14:05

I suppose for the same reason that people change the ages of their kids, or what their occupation is. So that there's no chance of something they say ringing a bell with someone and them going back through their posts and picking up on bits of information to confirm that it's someone they know.

Far easier to just say 'hobby' than to start changing tennis to pilates or Italian cookery classes to book club and then having to ensure your post still makes sense.

BigGlasses · 15/11/2018 14:10

I play a sport which is not that common depending on location, maybe equivalent to hurling, ie common in Ireland, less so for females, but not much played in the home counties. Along with other details/ specialist threads that I have commented on, eg for instance home schooling, it would be fairly easy to figure out who I was if you knew me. It doesn't matter as I tend not to post anything important, but you never know, I prefer to stay annoymous.

However I think people should give some sort of ballpark to what the 'hobby' is to help gain advice. Eg a 1 hour book group is completely different to a 2 day trip ultramarathon running including all the preparation.

thepoorestoftherichteabiscuits · 15/11/2018 14:12

Is it dogging in posh areas?

@Tinty

I should imagine posh dogging would be doing it in poor areas and commenting how depressing it must be doing it in 'only' a Ford Focus and how much more comfortable it is doing it on our leather seats in our brand new Mercedes.

I don't see what's so bad about naming a hobby that's unique and outing but then again I don't bitch about people online so don't care if people know I'm on here or not.

For what it's worth my hobbies are pretty generic and boring - sport, language learning (although pretty lazy), films etc.

festivellama · 15/11/2018 14:12

One of my hobbies is collecting china birds.

The other one is far too identifying for me to mention... Grin

Laceythesheep · 15/11/2018 14:13

I’ve got a book at home about hobbies. It says its an activity that you do in your spare time for interest or amusement.

thepoorestoftherichteabiscuits · 15/11/2018 14:16

@ festivellama

Is the other collecting china blokes? Smile

MaMisled · 15/11/2018 14:16

Mine are dancing, knitting and obsessively buying related accessories which I'll never live long enough to use.

DH hobby is watching silly video clips on his phone and achieving nothing.

Marmite27 · 15/11/2018 14:18

Mines watching Netflix in the bath and crocheting while wat hung Netflix on the sofa. (Making the most of my 30 days free trial Grin)

Holdingonbarely · 15/11/2018 14:19

It’s always cycling! Or marathons
These men always need a hobby that takes them away for hours and hours on end and then 3 week tours of far flung countries, so they don’t have to partake in any family life AT ALL
my hobby is drinking - it’s pretty fun

woollyheart · 15/11/2018 14:25

I think I have recognised people on Mumsnet when they mentioned their hobby.

abacucat · 15/11/2018 14:30

Oh God Woolly I knew I shouldn't have posted about my hobby on this thread.

Bibijayne · 15/11/2018 14:31

Power lifting

woollyheart · 15/11/2018 14:31

Haha - I'm not going to mention all my hobbies. Someone would definitely identify me! Smile

Changingagain · 15/11/2018 14:33

My hobby is dreaming about having enough time, energy and motivation for a hobby.

Tinty · 15/11/2018 14:33

@Tinty @wijjy

Is dogging really that outing? According to my mother everyone in her village is at it!!

Have you asked your Dmum if she participates? Is that why she moved to her village?

@thepoorestoftherichteabiscuits

Do you think this is what a PP was alluding to when she said her hobby was like yachting? Is it dogging on a posh boat. Grin

Doctor Who

Writing .

I am quiet open about my Nerdy pursuits.

OnwardUpwardsSometimesSideways · 15/11/2018 14:35

This thread is funny! I'm definitely going to suggest dogging in future whenever anyone's coy about hobbies. That's brilliant.

I've talked a lot about my DD on here; and I would be worried about outing her rather than myself.
I've also talked on here about situations with friends or family which they MIGHT recognise if they were on here and they saw those posts.

I've talked about work things.
So those are three reasons why I might be careful about what I'm sharing generally.
