To ask why nobody on MN will say what their hobby is?

So many threads involving time and money spent on either their own or partners hobby, but never any mention of what the hobby is. Perhaps there is some sort of hobby hierarchy that I am unaware of where some hobbies are seen as bragging and some down right embarrassing.

OP posts:

Knitting
Watching tv
Playing Pet Rescue on my phone. I'm very good at this!
Walking the dog and talking to strangers on my walks.

LuckyDiamond · 15/11/2018 13:17

I actually mentioned my DH’s hobby once in my early mn days and got a private message from someone who knows me IRL, so it can out you.

wonkylegs · 15/11/2018 13:20

I've just taken up knitting not so much as an active hobby but more as productive calming alternative to just fidgeting.
DHs hobby seems the be candy crush and moaning how he never gets anything done (can't see any connection)

Petalflowers · 15/11/2018 13:23

The music genius plays a bassoon I think.

OrdinarySnowflake · 15/11/2018 13:23

I also read a thread where someone mentioned one detail, that on it's own shouldnt be 'outing', and if you didn't already know them, you would find it hard to track them down - but it stuck a cord and I remembered the user name.

A few days later they posted something on another thread mentioning a part of the world they used to live in, and while thousands of people might well be able to post they used to live in X place, the two bits of info together made it clear to me who it was.

They are a friend of my DH's and I'm not sure if I should send them a message to say I've recognised them so they can name change, or if that would be weird.

oohyoudevilyou · 15/11/2018 13:23

I don't do anything in my non-working hours worthy enough to be called a hobby: I do the stuff I have to do (looking after kids, shopping, housework, admin etc), have the occasional night out and keep in touch with family and friends, then spend any time leftover watching TV and
playing about on the iPad. Wish I could say I did something sporty, intellectual or creative.

DiseasesOfTheSheep · 15/11/2018 13:24

I run barrels with my horses. There really aren't that many of us in the UK... It's pretty outing (but I don't care!).

Years ago I used to swim.
Less years ago I used to run & go to British Military Fitness.
Now I am getting back in to swimming and am going to try to start in the gym too.
My actual real things I do/achieve most often is sitting on the sofa eating or drinking while supposedly being on a diet and watching Netflix.
I need to pull my finger out.

DailyMailFail101 · 15/11/2018 13:26

I’m so boring I don’t have a hobby, I’d quite like one but not sure what I could do, hmmm

drspouse · 15/11/2018 13:26

See, I always think that people say that because a) they don't think we'll really see it as a hobby or b) they think it will be actually outing or c) we'll tell them their DP is being a knob to do this thing all weekend every weekend.
So under a) if you said "my hobby is baking" or "running" then that could mean, you make one batch of biscuits a week and it helps you relax or you're doing C25K, or it could mean you are applying for GBBO or having Olympic trials
or b) if you ARE having Olympic trials it might well be outing or if you do collect sheep skulls
or c) if your DP spends all his non-working waking hours playing a console game, is that actually more unhelpful than training for rugby twice a week, coaching a youth team a third night, and having away games with lots of travel both days at the weekend some weeks.

Personally, I knit, sew, bake (but more the biscuits once a week variety), and I also seem to end up making things like visual timetables and setting up kids' crafts but I don't see those as a hobby.
and I also like watching anything thriller/crime/comedy and going on MN

Mayhemmumma · 15/11/2018 13:28

Naked fire twizzling and hooping is just a bit too identifiable.

Idontcareifyouknowwhoiam · 15/11/2018 13:30

My hobby is high power model rocketry. There aren't that many of us, so I have name changed. 😆

dangerrabbit · 15/11/2018 13:30

There’s an mner that never says what instrument her dc plays because it’s rare and outing. Dc is apparently genius level on said instrument. Can anyone find Instrument X

Sackbutt.

My hobby is going on mumsnet but I don’t like to mention it because it might be outing.

Valasca · 15/11/2018 13:31

MumW, harp is surprisingly common. We have couple of teachers that offer lessons in our local primaries in a relatively smallish town. Apparently, it’s an easy instrument for young children to learn to play (compared to others).

I always picture a massive fucking cello that a poor child is alway wheeling around. That’s why it’s so identifying.

Or an oboe. Because I wanted to play one and my primary only offered lessons for flute/clarinet/French horn/trombone and sax. Most girls chose flute. I cursed my clarinet decision when I realised my case was 6x as heavy as theirs and I had to lug it around.

drinkswineoutofamug · 15/11/2018 13:32

I collect military memorabilia. Got a house full of ww1/2 trinkets from ww1 Christmas tins , trench art, silk postcards to gas masks and ration books.
Love to read. Burn cakes and love to educate myself.

TheresTheFlyingFuckIDontGive · 15/11/2018 13:32

I run and I craft, mainly paper cutting. Neither are outing. My husband cycles though. In lycra.

Laceythesheep · 15/11/2018 13:33

I read, do crochet and collect music that interests me. I also used to have a hobby that may ‘out’ me, but I now have to wait until I have the time, money and inclination to do it again. Grin

My hobby is reading history articles and talking about them in groups oh and MN while I should actually be working.
My username gives away the first one and anyone who knows me in rl wont out me for fear of having to listen to me talk about it

SilentIsla · 15/11/2018 13:42

What is a hobby?

Topseyt · 15/11/2018 13:43

I like to read, if I ever get the time. I also like to walk my dogs.

There! That narrows it down to a few million people.

Even if people who know me can guess who I am from that, why should it matter? It won't be that many people, and that's fine.
