Im absolutely disgusted at this and it shows how far the stigma against social housing tenants has gone.

I don't understand why only men have been arrested. The woman in the video was the one who put the effigy on the bonfire in the first place, saying "Bye, everyone!" in a singsong voice as she did so. If they know who the men are, surely they can easily trace her as well?

Bobbybobbins · 06/11/2018 17:58

I don't think you should be comparing burning an effigy of a living person with an effigy including those who died in a tragic accident. Boris et al have the luxury of actually being alive and in control of their destinies and opinions

jennymor123 · 06/11/2018 18:03

I'm not sure the causes really matter much. As said, both released huge amounts of dioxins, which in one way is what matters most. Yes, firemen and others were exposed for days/weeks afterwards, and one of the questions currently being avoided by the Grenfell authorities is why was nobody's blood tested afterwards? As for what will happen in future - clearly, by the way the government, council and Inquiry is concerned, hopefully nothing. 17 months on from the fire and no questions at all have been answered; nobody brought to task. It hasn't even been determined whether or not the cladding insulation contained flame retardant chemicals - and believe me, there are huge profits to be made or lost according to what the answer is to that particular question.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 06/11/2018 18:19

I suspect those reactions would have been different had they burned an effigy of the Twin Towers re. 9/11

I wouldn't be too sure, Helena. I posted online about a local, public celebration of that atrocity and the response was mainly abuse, dissimulation and excuse making

None of which prevents me from recognising the horror of this latest event ...

Soubriquet · 06/11/2018 18:21

I’ve seen some comments on a certain news page that states “it’s been 48 hours since this happened so we are now allowed to joke”

He then proceeded to list about 10 sick “jokes” all about Grenfell Sad

IfNotNowThenWooOoOoo · 06/11/2018 18:26

I have NEVER understood sick jokes. I just don't get it. People who think they are funny have clearly had an empathy bypass.

PortiaCastis · 06/11/2018 18:29

I don't understand sick jokes either mocking folk who burned alive is sick and moronic

Soubriquet · 06/11/2018 18:33

My dad was one who loved them

I’ll never forget how smug he looked telling me a load of jokes about 24 hours after the Boxing Day tsunami. I ripped into him for that and he made sure he never told me things like that again. Even though he called me an idiot, as they are only jokes and I should lighten up and get a sense of humour. Hmm

NigelGresley · 06/11/2018 18:47

There is no doubt that this is absolutely sick, wrong & disgusting. However I absolutely agree with jovial, the police response seems very disproportionate.

We are constantly hearing is how stretched police resources are and where more serious crime seems to be passing by uninvestigated, I can’t help but think there must be something more significant behind this.

OliviaStabler · 06/11/2018 18:47

I challenged someone who told a sick joke to be told I was a 'stuck up cow'.

caroline161 · 06/11/2018 18:48

It's sick and they are stupid. But arrested and held in custody? Who was it who authorised the cladding? Who knew they were living like that ? Didn't see them being arrested and held in custody?

LuckyDiamond · 06/11/2018 18:50

Why do racists not have the intelligence to keep it to themselves?

I suppose the clue is in my question.

I must remember to buy the cookbook, a work colleague tells be it is brilliant. This incident has reminded me to give some support to the Grenfell victims.

MrsReacher1 · 06/11/2018 19:01

Tasteless , yes , but criminal ? Thought police - much more terrifying than a couple of idiots in their back garden.

2018Already · 06/11/2018 19:04

Are you really, honestly bothered by this? Who fucking cares about some idiots making a sick joke and why does the media even need to bring it to our attention? I couldn’t care less!

2018Already · 06/11/2018 19:07

The fact that so many people in authority have solemnly commented on it really worries me. The PM - really? Are there not bigger failings that need to be addressed? Or do they just want to be seen to be punishing someone and these guys will do as scapegoats?

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 06/11/2018 19:08

Yes I do care, Funnily enoughHmm
Jokes are supposed to be funny. If you aint noticed no one is laughing.

PortiaCastis · 06/11/2018 19:10

Yes I care and so do the people whose relatives burned alive and those that managed to survive the terrible fire.

Soubriquet · 06/11/2018 19:20

I’m guessing you are one of those people who find the jokes hilarious

I care. I actually cried when I saw the fire on tv. I didn’t know anyone but my heart still broke for those

So yes I care

InertPotato · 06/11/2018 19:22

But were you unaware that there are vile people amongst us before today?

NotACleverName · 06/11/2018 19:23

Who fucking cares about some idiots making a sick joke and why does the media even need to bring it to our attention? I couldn’t care less!

Good for you. I care that countless people lost their lives because of incompetence and indifference. I care that nobody responsible for the fire seems to have suffered any kind of real consequence. I care that survivors and the dead are now being mocked by knuckle-dragging gammon. Apathy isn't a good look.

Antigonads · 06/11/2018 19:29

I too think the police response and politicians commenting is totally disproportionate. But it’s a sign of the times in which we live.

jennymor123 · 06/11/2018 19:37

"Who was it who authorised the cladding?"

Sir Ken Knight. He was also on the board of the company that renovated Grenfell. He's also on the board of BRE. He also played a large part in blocking safety changes to the furniture flammability regulations. Why? Because the changes would have reduced the use of toxic flame retardants which Sir Ken is very fond of. Which is probably why he's now saying that you don't need to ban cladding; just make sure it passes a good test; translation: we need to keep cladding because the flame retardant industry is moving that way. Oh, and in You Couldn't Make it Up category, who was appointed to chair the 'independent' experts panel to the Public Inquiry? You guessed it: Sir Ken Knight.

Santaclarita · 06/11/2018 19:41

2018Already were you one of the people that did it by any chance?

doubleshotespresso · 06/11/2018 20:00

NotACleverName That is exactly how I wanted to word a response to 2018already- think-you.

2018 are you a relative of one of these sick individuals or something?

Ceilingrose · 06/11/2018 20:37

The usual racists and far right.
