He talks about this incident in the new Adam Buxton podcast episode 79.

Provides a bit more context as to why he does this and the other outrageous things he has written/drawn at book signings.

I now think the OP was being unreasonable as this seems to be part and parcel of being a fan of his.

Do we all have to go off and listen or do you think you might relay the information?

I’m clueless as to who he is, so have utterly no interest in listening to a total unknown witter in in a podcast. I do however recall the thread, so would be interested in why or how writing ‘whore’ is acceptable by his fans (plus what words he writes in his male fans’ books).

Ooh thanks for the heads up @TeachesOfPeaches, will go listen now! Very interested to hear the incident from his side.

Yes indeed, does he do similar for his adoring male fans or is it just women he harasses, I mean, entertains.

I didn't know who he was either but I listen to the Adam Buxton podcasts. He says the last time he was called a 'little' was by the mother of a woman he signed her book 'whore'. Seems like this is typical of the things he writes as he gave other examples and he simply says what he writes is better than what he is asked to do.

"Called a little?" Confused What? I still don't get it.

Meant to say that OP's mother called him a 'horrible little man'.

I am dubious about him. Like the R4 stuff but then saw him live and my misogyny meter was beeping.

I don't agree, I think there's some words everyone should have the sense not to use as they have such negative connotations. He comes across as one of those people that trades off being so 'edgy and dark' and special when really we could all say similar things if we didn't have respect for other people.

My point being that if I was a fan of his (I'm not) I wouldn't be surprised if he wrote something offensive in my book as he seems quite infamous for his book signings. Once singing books for 11 hours.

Meh, I still don’t get it by that explanation.

I think it’s just one of those in-jokes where there isn’t actually any explanation but everyone thinks they are terribly clever for being in the club.

Misogyny by mutual admiration, as it were. Meh. Failing to admire the wonderful man responsible for it.

The litmus test for me would be if he'd still write that if he knew that woman would next month be the nurse who treats someone close to him, the teacher of a child he's close to or someone interviewing him for a job he wants. If he'd hold back in those cases then yes, he is a little man.

What? He wrote whore in the op’s book, because he was called a ‘little’ by the mother of the op who’s book he wrote whore in?

Quite a paradoxical explanation.

Is he a seasoned time traveller or was it a one off worm hole?

No, he wrote whore and then OP's mother called him a 'horrible little man'. In the interview on the podcast was Adam Buxton asking when DS was last called 'little.

I know who David Sedaris is but didn't know about this incident. I've never found him particularly funny. But if I got called a whore every time my mother insulted someone ...well, I'd be getting called a whore a lot.

Toddleoo makes a very good point.

Wait. So the mother insulted him AFTER he wrote it? Why did he write it then???

Hate prick heads like that.

It’s one of those where the explanation doesn’t make it any better.

Not that I have a scooby who David Sidaris is.

He wrote something nice in my daughter's book in Pittsburgh. She and I both love his books. But he's a strange little dude.

I remember the OP. He sounds like a misogynist prick. 'Hee hee I was only joking' or 'boys will be boys and yanoo calling women whores is all part of this nudge, nudge wink, wink' does not cut it with me.

He has had many other complaints (including men) about his signings.

I remember this thread! The OP wouldn't say at the time who it was, though people worked it out quite quickly as writing obscenities in people's books is apparently what Sedaris does at book signings. The OP was understandably upset about it.

I don't think it's very funny, and it's put me off Sedaris, who I used to like.

Writing ‘whore’ in a woman’s book at a book signing is an attention grabbing stunt and while he thinks it is amusing and people should ‘get it’ because he is who he is, it is ridiculous.

I agree with Toddleoo (especially the interview bit because I’m not sure he would necessarily respect a nurse or teacher ...)

The litmus test for me would be if he'd still write that if he knew that woman would next month be the nurse who treats someone close to him, the teacher of a child he's close to or someone interviewing him for a job he wants. If he'd hold back in those cases then yes, he is a little man.
