At what SIL named her puppy..

I'm aware this is super petty and not a huge deal but it's really bothering me

We visit my SIL all the time. She's just gotten a puppy and decided to name it a name almost identical to my DDs name, bar one letter. The names sound the practically the same and we often get confused who is being referred to. AIBU to wonder why, seeing as there is billions of wonderful names out there, she had to choose DDs? Would you be annoyed?

I'm sure the pup's name is not Peppy but Pepe. And I wouldn't be bothered about it.

Would you feel the same if your dd was called Jenny and SIL called her puppy Penny?

I would be annoyed yes, especially if examples of actual confusion have arisen, mind you peppy isn't really a girls name, who needs enemies with family like this, in naming conversations my mum always came up with girls names similar to her dogs or often rhyming, don't think she noticed really till we pointed it out, and it was always a complement as we all knew the dog was the one true love of her life before her grandkids

Pepe is very different from Poppy in cultural roots and spelling patterns. Hold on to that and breathe.

My cousin named her son the same name as her (long deceased) childhood dog. Thought that was a bit odd.

That’s very odd. When we got our pup, there were loads of names I loved but discounted as friends and neighbours had children with the same or similar names. And they weren’t even family members!

YANBU anyway... there’s a million names to choose from why did it have to be that?

Either way OP I bet she didn't even consider it. I had a woman at school when DD1 was about 5, come up to tell me "We got a puppy and we've always wanted a puppy and planned to call it Anna" (DD;s name)''

My face was and to her credit she said "Obviously we can't now though" I suggested another name which she absolutely loved and they called it that!

We have the same taste in names.

Peppy and Poppy aren't that similar.

It's like....I don't know "Olivia and Oliver" or "Annette and Anita" different but similar.

Yanbu. Either she's a bitch and enjoys taking it out on small children or she honestly didnt realise and will change it, my SiL is the first one.
DD3's called Emmi, SiL had a dog and named it Emma. DS2 is called Jett and a few months later SiL had a dog and named it Jedd.
Luckily she gets bored and got rid of them after a few months when she doesnt get the attention she wanted from doing it.

I got a rescue dog with a name one letter different to my DD I very often get them mixed up!!! In the grand scheme of things does it really matter.

Oooh. This could be about me (it's not as we got our dog a year ago).

We adopted a dog who was called Poppy before we named her. We have a niece called Poppy so we called her Pepsi so she still answered to her name and sounded the same but wasn't Poppy.

I was conscious that I didn't want my in laws to be offended, turns out they really were not bothered.

Peppy isn't a name! Pepe is, and it's different to Poppy - totally. And to be honest, Peppy is different enough to Poppy too. You just need to all enunciate clearly

Maybe I just have a weird family but my niece would be THRILLED if a puppy had the same name as her

What is going to happen to the child if someone mishears the name? Surely they're usually engaged in fairly different activities? If pup poops in the hallway, will anyone really think DD is being blamed? (am saying this light-heartedly, I promise - you've already said you know it's not a huge deal)

Friend’s child is Poppy, his sister’s dog is Poppy!

Oh my goodness, this really wouldn't bother me. My sister adopted a dog whose name is the exact same as mine. They've kept it. We have some laughs when they tell her to get off the sofa and I jump up...

And my in-laws named their dog with a name that ends the same as mine... 'bel'. So I'm forever looking up as you just hear the last bit.

Good job we can laugh about it.

YANBU but I wouldn't make a thing of it as I don't see what it would achieve.

The end sound of Pepe is very different to Poppy. It’s a long sound, no idea what the glyph for it is. Popeye would have been worse!
