At what SIL named her puppy..

I'm aware this is super petty and not a huge deal but it's really bothering me GrinConfused

We visit my SIL all the time. She's just gotten a puppy and decided to name it a name almost identical to my DDs name, bar one letter. The names sound the practically the same and we often get confused who is being referred to. AIBU to wonder why, seeing as there is billions of wonderful names out there, she had to choose DDs? Would you be annoyed?

My MIL's dog had a very similar name to be. It led to hours of hilarity.

Pebblespony · 16/10/2018 13:26

My father and dog have the same name. It's not that confusing.

caoraich · 16/10/2018 13:27

Wouldn't bother me at all. But then all our family pets have had "human" names. My brother and our dog both had different full names that happened to have nearly the same diminutive. My brother loved it!

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 16/10/2018 13:28

Because Peppy isn't a name.

SleepingStandingUp · 16/10/2018 13:28

With you OP, would feel passive aggressive or just bloody stupid at best.
Can you get Poppy to call Pepe something like Pepster or Pep, Dr Pepe etc

Cherries101 · 16/10/2018 13:28

It’s not similar at all. Poppy and Peppy are distinctive sounds in the English language.

BunsOfAnarchy · 16/10/2018 13:28

So if she just called her puppy 'Puppy', would you be annoyed then? Its the same thing, same letter replaced and all....

SleepingStandingUp · 16/10/2018 13:29

My father and dog have the same name. It's not that confusing
Out of curiosity, why did you name your dog the same as your Dad? Plus I assume you call one Dad and one Steve or whatever, same for Grandad

thecatsthecats · 16/10/2018 13:30

We nearly hired someone with the exact same name as his cousin, who already worked for us.

I think this is petty, because I can't see any way that it would practically affect you beyond maybe, occasionally, your daughter sitting down on command (useful skill to master!), or the dog thinking it is the one getting a biscuit.

"Molehill, not mountain" is my new fave pithy response though.

Jenasaurus · 16/10/2018 13:32

Years ago me and my .ExDH had an Alsatian called Karlee. His sister now has a daughter called Carly. I thought it odd at the time but no one else did

Pebblespony · 16/10/2018 13:32

We adopted the dog from a shelter & he was already named. My mother wanted to change it but Dad thought it was funny. Now we call him The other 'Steve'. I think the neighbours get a shock when we visit and start shouting at Steve to behave himself.

ZeroFuchsGiven · 16/10/2018 13:32

My dd and my mothers Cat have the same name. I dont see the issue.

puppymouse · 16/10/2018 13:34

Am I weird that my SIL could call any dog present or future my exact name or DD's name and I wouldn't mind at all??

Hunlife · 16/10/2018 13:34

Meh. A woman at work called her new cat the same name as mine. I don't have a common name and what's more she called her cat the abbreviation I use. Her cats are like her children so I guess it means she likes me, so I take it as a complement Grin

Hideandgo · 16/10/2018 13:38

What exactly is the problem. Do you think it’s a passive aggressive way to get at you? Somehow implying that your DD is equal to her dog or something?

CookPassBabtridge · 16/10/2018 13:38

I don't understand why people are bothered by stuff like this. Why does it matter?

poptartprincess · 16/10/2018 13:42

I do know it's not a big deal lol. And it isn't Pepe it is Peppy.

Speak to her, my Sis had originally called her dog a name our pregnant friend had chosen for their child, she changed it. It’s a dog, I’m sure her niece is more important to her.
Also think of about it, we actually changed our puppy’s name after a few weeks because our nephew (actually Sis’s son) has a speech impediment and couldn’t pronounce it. I don’t think anyone would put a dogs name about their niece....

PippilottaLongstocking · 16/10/2018 13:43

To the people assuming the dog is called Pepe because ‘Peppy isn’t a name’... Peppy would be a pretty normal dog name. People call their dogs all kind of weird things, it’s not like naming a child

ValidUser · 16/10/2018 13:44

Puppy is only one letter off either.

1in4FrogsIsALeapFrog · 16/10/2018 13:44

*thinking about it

SleepingStandingUp · 16/10/2018 13:46

More importantly how does DD feel? I can imagine a sensitive kid being upset Aunty thinks they have a dog name etc. Although Hunlife has the right attitude.

At the very least it's just bloody odd. Pebbles I get, dog was already named Steve and DaddySteve thought it was funny. But I'd hate to think I'd upset my niece by calling our pet something so similar when she could call it anything.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 16/10/2018 13:47

Never heard of Peppy. Where did she get the name from?

SleepingStandingUp · 16/10/2018 13:47

Yeah cos people always stick to proper spelling and names with their kids haha

HeebieJeebies456 · 16/10/2018 13:48

Maybe she's passive aggressively referring to your dd as a bitch - and thereby you?
