At what SIL named her puppy..

I'm aware this is super petty and not a huge deal but it's really bothering me GrinConfused

We visit my SIL all the time. She's just gotten a puppy and decided to name it a name almost identical to my DDs name, bar one letter. The names sound the practically the same and we often get confused who is being referred to. AIBU to wonder why, seeing as there is billions of wonderful names out there, she had to choose DDs? Would you be annoyed?

Is it Riva and Rover, OP?

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 16/10/2018 13:53

Maybe she's passive aggressively referring to your dd as a bitch - and thereby you?

Good lord.

MrsJane · 16/10/2018 14:01

I'd return the favour!

Get a dog, cat, fish or stick insect and do something similar to her name!

doyouneedtoknow · 16/10/2018 14:04

Also reminds me of this story:

www.ok.co.uk/celebrity-news/972997/danielle-lloyd-hits-back-celebrity-big-brother-feud-twitter-nicola-mclean-dog-rocky

Named her dog "Rocky" and that was the name of her 'supposed friend's' son

RuggerHug · 16/10/2018 14:05

DH has the same name as a family members former cat. The amount of times it caused unintentional humour or confusion was more than expected.

especially when DSis told me she didn't think she could be in the same room as X any more and all sorts went through my head in the 5 seconds before she clarified CAT NOT MAN!-

AintNobodyHereButUsChickens · 16/10/2018 14:07

My friend adopted a dog with the same name as her husband. It was most confusng when she told me the story of Dave peeing in her favourite handbag Grin

EdisonLightBulb · 16/10/2018 14:11

I was really embarrassed when I realised I had named our adopted stray cat the same name as my SIL. I never gave it a thought until she mentioned it.

Think Katie and Kate, but we call SIL Kate and her friends call her Katie.

Oh well. She didn't seem offended.

FlowThroughIt · 16/10/2018 14:20

I've always thought Poppy sounded like a dog's name so I can see how her dog being named Peppy might bother you. I'm guessing the puppy is quite energetic and that's the real reason it was picked rather than be a slight at your DD.

unyummy4amummy · 16/10/2018 14:25

One of my best friends gave her son a quite unusual name, which just so happened to be the same as next door's cat. That gave us plenty of chuckles. -Misses-point-of-thread-entirely-

OP, it would make me laugh, to be honest.

Godotsarrived · 16/10/2018 14:26

My SIL named her daughter after my horse...

littlepeas · 16/10/2018 14:33

My sister did something similar - named her dog something very similar to ds’s name - I don’t think she realised she’d done it (def not in any way malicious or passive aggressive). Dh was annoyed, but I didn’t see the point of making a fuss, the dog was already named and that was that. Ds finds it funny.

tillytrotter1 · 16/10/2018 14:36

Our granddaughter shares her name with our next door neighbour's dog, the dog seems OK with it and she had it first! Can be funny in Summer and we're all in the garden.

crabapplecrumble · 16/10/2018 14:37

Why does it matter? Your dc will probably be charmed to have a similar name to the dog. My next door neighbour has a grandchild with the same name as one of my pets, so sometimes she or I will be calling in the garden and cause a bit of confusion, but we just laugh about it.

billybagpuss · 16/10/2018 14:38

When I was a kid my aunt named her cats the exact names of my mum and dad. 40 years on they are still annoyed even though the cats are long gone.

LOL7 · 16/10/2018 14:41

I feel your pain OP-
I have an aunt who I absolutely hate, she is not very nice at all. My daughter was born three weeks ago and I named her Elsie-Rose, that aunt then got a kitten a week later, and named her Elsie!

PuppyMonkey · 16/10/2018 14:47

Lol at pp saying Peppy isn’t a real name so it can’t be Peppy. I know a dog called Button, which isn’t a name either.Grin

Steve is a great name for a dog btw.

GreatWesternValkyrie · 16/10/2018 14:58

Pepe or Pepper I could understand but Peppy is just a non name, been for a dog.

Mind you, as a kid, my best friend and my dog were both named Sally - it didn’t seem odd to any of us so I really wouldn’t worry.

Snowymountainsalways · 16/10/2018 14:59

You are being over sensitive I am sure they didn't even think about your dd name at the time, and probably just liked the name.

TatianaLarina · 16/10/2018 15:10

I can’t imagine caring.

steff13 · 16/10/2018 15:12

Lol at pp saying Peppy isn’t a real name so it can’t be Peppy. I know a dog called Button, which isn’t a name either.

Right? It's not a name, but it's still a word that exists in the English language. I know a cat named Tofu.

PippilottaLongstocking · 16/10/2018 15:14

Surely ‘Peppy’ means something like lively and enthusiastic. Would be like calling your dog ‘Happy’ which I’m sure many people have done. How on Earth is it a ‘non name’

moolady1977 · 16/10/2018 15:17

My dd shares her name with her auntie and uncles dog and when the dog plays up she gets called my dds full name we find it funny as does my dd

BrendasUmbrella · 16/10/2018 15:22

You could try annoying her into changing it? Exaggerate some of it and explain that you're making sure to differentiate between the two names. "Pepp-AYYYYY".

Zipadeedoodah2 · 16/10/2018 15:28

Wouldn't bother me in the slightest! Might do if it was exactly the same name but they're not!
