At what SIL named her puppy..

I'm aware this is super petty and not a huge deal but it's really bothering me GrinConfused

We visit my SIL all the time. She's just gotten a puppy and decided to name it a name almost identical to my DDs name, bar one letter. The names sound the practically the same and we often get confused who is being referred to. AIBU to wonder why, seeing as there is billions of wonderful names out there, she had to choose DDs? Would you be annoyed?

Call the dog peps and if she asks why say it's a nick name since peppy and poppy keep getting confused.

Pixel99 · 16/10/2018 16:05

My DD shares her name with a DCat I once had. Grin DS upset I never used his name. I kept that name as I always liked it and thought it more likely I would have a DS than DD. Don't know why. Poppy and Peppy are different. I wouldn't let it worry you.

lessthanBeau · 16/10/2018 16:10

As you've named your dd one of the most popular names for dogs and cats, I would have thought it's something she'll encounter for years to come. My dn is called poppy and I know at least 5 different dogs on the school run that are also called poppy.
My dd has the same name as barrack obamas dog Grin

LakieLady · 16/10/2018 16:18

We called my dog a female name from a song, not realising it had become a popular name for little girls.

Thankfully, children are usually delighted to be told that the cute little doggy has the same name as they do. The parents perhaps not so much ...

IsadoraQuagmire · 16/10/2018 16:26

Maybe it's named after Peppy Miller the main female character in The Artist?
Anyway, I'd love it if someone named their dog after me...

Saltypeanuts · 16/10/2018 16:27

It wouldn't bother me

poptartprincess · 16/10/2018 16:28

Haha I'm sure it'll grow on me. I just wish MIL wouldn't mention it every time I visit SIL 😂 Hopefully DD will love it growing up.

My nieces and nephews named their hamster after me. 🐹

ThistleAmore · 16/10/2018 16:32

Christ, you're a bit precious, aren't you?

Pepe (if that's what the dog is called) is a dimunitive of Giuseppe, which is a boy's name. Your child is female and presumably human. Are you worried they might get confused?

If it makes you feel any better, my mother picked my name after a neighbour's Skye terrier, who was apparently a lovely dog. I tend to think that animals are better than people anyway, so I've always felt quite blessed by that.

DappledThings · 16/10/2018 16:34

DD is Zoe. PIL's dog is Cleo. Both DD and the dog frequently get called Chloe as an accidental amalgamation of the two names. I think it's funny.

ThistleAmore · 16/10/2018 16:34

Also, my cousin's eldest daughter's middle name is that of one of the very much-loved foundation bitches we had when my family bred gun dogs when we were growing up. She loves it. Grin

KC225 · 16/10/2018 16:35

It'll be awkward when they start school. Let's hope you daughter and the puppy are different classes.

steff13 · 16/10/2018 16:36

My nieces and nephews named their hamster after me.

Aww, they must love you a lot to bestow such an honor on you.

sockunicorn · 16/10/2018 16:39

i must have a wierd family too - my daughter was due on my sister, Sarah's birthday. She was THRILLED and (seriously) demanded we call her Sarah if they shared a birthday. I was a bit Hmm as I didnt want to call her the same name as my sister. My sister demanded "thats the rule! you have to". luckily my daughter came a day early!!! My sister was gutted and said she suspected I started pushing too early so they didnt share a birthday Grin

OneStepSideways · 16/10/2018 17:11

I know a few dogs and cats called Poppy, it's a popular name for pets. I think you're over reacting. Pepe is a different name, I doubt she even thought of her niece when naming the dog!

GreatWesternValkyrie · 16/10/2018 17:40

Surely ‘Peppy’ means something like lively and enthusiastic. Would be like calling your dog ‘Happy’ which I’m sure many people have done. How on Earth is it a ‘non name’

Whilst peppy and happy each have a meaning so do snotty and flatulent. The’re all non names in my book but it’s merely an opinion Grin

EmperorTomatoRetchup · 16/10/2018 17:49

I would be beyond chuffed if someone named a pet after me too.

I can't see what problems it would pose unless you plan on training your daughter to walk to heel or to beg for dog biscuits.

BillywilliamV · 16/10/2018 17:51

Poppy and Hoppy would be more annoying!

SamanthaJayne4 · 16/10/2018 18:26

I had a dog with the same name as a niece and a friend. DC chose the name as it rhymed with our other dog's name. Penny and Jenny. It did sound rather comical when called out at the vet's!

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 16/10/2018 18:31

My friend has a DB and a ddog with sort of matching names (think Fred & Ted sort of matching sounds but posher). Her mum does mix them up but it is viewed as funny.

I'd be a teeny bit miffed despite knowing I was unreasonable, if I was you. Have a day to sulk & then sit back to enjoy the accidental mix-up giggles. Unless she's done it on purpose to be snide it's harmless.

Butterymuffin · 16/10/2018 18:44

People are weird about dogs. People are weird about names. Combine the two and it's.. moider. (Wasn't Freeway a terrible name for a dog, looking back?)

Jenasaurus · 17/10/2018 17:07

actually this reminds me,. my DD is sophie and my late DM had a cat called Wolfie, she used to call Sophie, Wolfie all the time, but I think its just because she chatted to the cat a lot and it was always on the tip of her tongue.

MakeAHouseAHome · 17/10/2018 17:11

Why are people suggesting to the OP that she gets the SIL to change her mind!? The SIL can name her ouppy whatever in the world she wants...

PhilomenaButterfly · 17/10/2018 17:14

That's all right, my aunt, my mum's sister, called her dog after my mum. They've never been close... 😂

PhilomenaButterfly · 17/10/2018 17:18

And I have a caravan named after me. I'd be momentarily baffled by statements such as: "I've changed the curtains in Philomena." 😂
