Trump’s top economic adviser, Larry Kudlow, said that the administration had to be tougher on spending and would begin to consider “the larger entitlements” — Social Security and Medicare are the two biggest social insurance programs — “probably next year”
Senator Mitch McConnell, the majority leader, says the federal deficit is rising because of spending on programs like Social Security and Medicare, not tax cuts.

Surely Yaxley-Lennon will not gain entry to US, he has several criminal convictions, including a drug offence?

I don't know why they would feel the need to import any more hatred. Hopefully, he won't get admission.

'Trump's Condemnations of Violence Aren’t Convincing His Supporters.
The president has given the nation no reason to think his recent disavowals are sincere.'
An irony of this discourse is that conservative Trump defenders, and some in the media, have adopted a version of the oft-parodied argument among some on the left that words can constitute violence: Left-wing words are violence, and right-wing violence is just words.

Trump has been his usual sympathetic self on the mass shooting in a synagogue:

"This has little do do with it," Trump says when asked about gun laws in wake of Pittsburgh shooting.
Instead, he puts the onus on the synagogue: "If they had some kind of a protection inside the temple, then it could have maybe been a very different situation. They didn't."

The synagogue shooting is just shocking. And if all DT can think of is armed guards in places of worship, there is something seriously wrong.

I can't imagine what the families are going through... and to hear that with the lack of leadership. So very sad.

Trump says if they "had protection [guns] inside" the synagogue, "the results would have been much better.
"To see this happening again and again and again, it's just a shame," he says.
He's asked if there's anything that can be done.
"Look at the violence all over the world. The world is violent. The world is a violent world."
Says mass shooters should get the death penalty without having to "wait years and years."
"I think they should very much bring the death penalty into vogue."

It was a baby naming ceremony at the synagogue. Shocking, just so shocking

PerkingFaintly · 27/10/2018 18:32

Oh god. The shooting at the synagogue.Sad

One of (many) ghastly things about freelance terror attacks is the copycat effect. Media reporting on a possible terror attack inspires further terror attacks by people who identify with the attacker.

At the same time, we can't not report attacks, because it's important to record this is happening. I hope the media follow best-practice of not glamorising the attacker, and of talking primarily of the victims while only briefly mentioning the attacker's name.

PerkingFaintly · 27/10/2018 18:35

I'm reminded of Bill Clinton's words in 2011, after the attack on Gabriells Giffords, that rhetoric "falls on the unhinged and the hinged alike".

And that "This is an occasion for us to reaffirm that our political differences shouldn't degenerate into demonisation, in the sense that if you don't agree with me you're not a good American.

Social media accounts suggest shooting suspect Robert Bowers was a neo-Nazi/white nationalist who loathed Jews, migrants and refugees. He also said he strongly disliked Trump because he thought Trump was too soft on Jews.

The suspect also appeared to suggest, baselessly, that Jews were behind or connected to the caravan. Some on the right, including Rep. Matt Gaetz, have spread a baseless theory that Soros was giving caravan participants money. (Trump then reposted the video Gaetz posted.)

Trump: "The results could've been much better. It is a very, very -- it’s a very difficult thing for me to stand as president and to watch any of this go. You know, before I ran for office...I’d watched instances like this with churches and other things. I’d say, ‘What a shame.'"

Trump is talking defensively about his hair, saying it's this way because of his shooting remarks. "I was standing under the wing of Air Force One...and the wind was blowing and the rain and I was soaking wet and that's what I ended up with today...at least you know it's mine."

More hair stuff, because that is what really matters to him on the day 11 innocents have been slaughtered:
Steve Herman
@W7VOA
Because his hair got wet speaking to reporters in the rain outside Air Force One, @POTUS says he considered cancelling today's events because of the #TreeOfLifeSynagogue shooting and his "bad hair day," but then someone told him his hair actually looked better.
