I buy new every winter as they are usually too small to wear for 2 winters.

They have two winter coats each

Bunchofdaffodils · 27/09/2018 22:21

One cosy winter coat and one raincoat. Have to last for at least two years.

LusaCole · 27/09/2018 22:22

Mine have two coats each - a winter one and a summer raincoat. They usually need a new coat each winter but actually this year DD’s coat still fits. Poor old DS2 gets DS1’s cast-offs.

megletthesecond · 27/09/2018 22:23

Two winter coats each. One for school and one for weekends. I tend to buy a size up for so they last for a bit more than one winter. The previous years weekend coat becomes the school coat.
It also allows for washing and misplacing.

ShoeJunkie · 27/09/2018 22:23

Rain jacket and a thicker winter coat. They also have a gillet thing if that counts as a coat!

PippilottaLongstocking · 27/09/2018 22:23

A lightweight rain coat and a proper warm winter coat

Rebecca899 · 27/09/2018 22:23

Thank you bakebear, i have 5 girls and my husband dont want me to buy new coats for my 3 youngest girls every year ,he thinks they should wear old jacket from their oldest 2 sisters old coats which i think its boring and they are lovely coats in the shop now

One fold up to that lives in the bottom of the schoolbag and one winter coat here for each child. Ds1 also has a technical sports jacket type thing if his own choosing.

One size tends to last two winters. I only change them when they grow out of them.

vickyh22 · 27/09/2018 22:24

Mine have 2 winter coats
One for school/one for weekends
If I could afford it they would have a third ya!

Howhot · 27/09/2018 22:26

Coats are expensive, I would pass them down if I could. I can see your husband's point of view.

3in4years · 27/09/2018 22:26

I buy one at the end of winter in the sale for my eldest in the next size up. The others wear the hand me downs.

vickyh22 · 27/09/2018 22:27

And yes buy new every winter! Size up so it lasts the whole winter which is usually till April! I have 3 boys I've been able to pass one coat down if it's a good quality coat!

GiveMeAllTheGin8 · 27/09/2018 22:27

Raincoat, dressy coat which I buy in November , two warm jackets and a fold up one for school bag.

GiveMeAllTheGin8 · 27/09/2018 22:28

And I only have one coatBlush

LibraryLurker · 27/09/2018 22:28

Rebecca899, if the coats that have been outgrown by the two older girls are still in good condition then I think your husband has a point. A possible compromise might be if you agreed to buy bigger sizes for each of the 3 little ones so that the coats would last then for 2 winters.

redsummershoes · 27/09/2018 22:28

one combined fleece/rainproof coat.
cosy when cold or just a rain skin if needed.
so far we needed a new one each year.

Kokapetl · 27/09/2018 22:29

My youngest has a stupid number because we get hand-me-downs from friends, have old coats from oldest DC, MIL buys coats most years and my Mum gets them from charity shops too. So more than 6 coats at the moment.

Older one has 2 coats: one warm one and one thinner waterproof one.

I have only ever bought one pac-a-mac for my DC although DH got them coats when they were smaller.

CallMePea · 27/09/2018 22:34

One winter coat and one thinner raincoat for when it's not freezing cold. They last 2-3 years.

NotTired · 27/09/2018 22:34

I'm embarrassed by my DS' coat collection. But I am a slightly obsessive washer. He has two winter coats, although one was bought by DGM and doesn't really suit DS. then he has a raincoat, two of those thick M and S cardigan coats, a fleece, a puddle suit and a snow suit.

Cachailleacha · 27/09/2018 22:37

Coat will be worn for the 3rd winter this year. Also has a raincoat in the same size, and a gilet (second hand). I will replace the coat and raincoat by next winter. I would expect to get at least 2 years out of a coat.

Hillarious · 27/09/2018 22:38

DD is 21 and had enough coats to stock a small branch of CoatsRUs.

TheChocolateTrain · 27/09/2018 22:38

A rain coat which takes a fleece liner, a thick winter coat and one in between. I buy large and expect it to last 2 years. Pass down if I can.

TheBigFatMermaid · 27/09/2018 22:38

DS age 12 has 2.

DD age 13 has none, will not be getting one either. She is home educated, so no teachers to judge the lack of coat, not that she would wear one anyway. We are on a limited income, so why would I waste good money on something that will not be worn!

Rebecca899 · 27/09/2018 22:39

Thank you everyone

Two coats each - a thick winter one and a thinner rain coat.
DD2 is wearing hand me downs from DD1, they are in good condition as usually buy new each year. Why spend the money if you don’t have to?
