TheBigFatMermaid You can get good condition second-hand coats on ebay for very affordable prices.

Rebecca899, this is good advice for you too. I can quite see that your younger daughters would get sick of not choosing their own coats, so log on to ebay, and shortlist some appropriately-sized ones for them to pick from.

JamieVardysHavingAParty · 28/09/2018 10:26

Oh, and on subject, mine have a thick jacket and a light waterproof each. Each one was bought second-hand on ebay.

holycityzoo · 28/09/2018 10:27

Hmm I'm a bit obsessed by warm coats I must admit, it as a child I was always freezing so maybe down to that.
My dc have lots of coats but only because they've either been handed down or given me. The oldest is 14 so trying to get her into a coat is almost impossible!

PoxAlert · 28/09/2018 10:34

This winter my DD has 3.

But that's a first. Just due to the fact I found a wonderful Trespass snow jacket in a charity shop in her size for £2 and couldn't leave it.

She also has a school coat.

And then an M&S Mac that you can zip an inner jacket in and out of to make it warmer.

So far (she's 5) each winters coat has done her 2 winters as she doesn't grown particularly fast and she's usually a size behind her age. So the M&S one is from last winter.

My older two each have a warm coat and a thin raincoat. The last few years they also had a gilet but have outgrown those now.

Dd1 also has a duffle material coat that she bought herself

Ds also has a waterproof coat for his football team. His other waterproof is getting a bit small now so the football one will be his only one soon.

Toddler has thin raincoat, fleece lined waterproof coat (hand me down), warm coat (hand me down) and lined waterproof trousers for all the Saturdays she has to spend watching her brother play football.

When dd1 left primary school she still had the coat I’d bought her at the beginning of year 3! (The hanger had said 7-8 but when I got it home it was actually 10-11 so was quite big for the first year or two!) Ds’ also lasted about 3 years. Toddler is on the second year of all hers, whether they’ll last the winter depends on how much she grows but I wouldn’t buy one unless she needed it.

My daughter is only 3 so she outgrows her clothes pretty quick although she still has last years winter coat on this year as well as an autumny rain coat which I got her at the end of this summer but I do plan on buying her another proper winter coat when it gets colder so she has a couple to choose from.

AccidentallyRunToWindsor · 28/09/2018 17:40

DSC have zero coats. They aren't cool apparently. I've explained that hypothermia is less cool but that was met with disdain Hmm

Agustarella · 28/09/2018 17:51

I'm done with buying raincoats. 99% of rainy days in the UK are chilly enough for a proper coat, and all our nice raincoats have been outgrown after maybe half a dozen wears.

anniehm · 28/09/2018 18:13

When they were smaller, a warm coat and a rain jacket, I replaced if needed each year and handed down. Thrifty one here

GerdaLovesLili · 28/09/2018 18:15

hypothermia is less cool....

Hypothermia is literally the ultimate in cool.

toomuchtooold · 28/09/2018 18:26

I was going to say one coat each and then I remembered that in addition to the proper winter coat they also have rain jackets (and waterproof trousers), a windproof jacket for spring/autumn, ski jackets and fleeces. Germany: overdressed for every weather Grin

RocknRolla · 28/09/2018 18:38

My dd5 has 2 warm coats, one for school and one for weekend. She also has one raincoat.

AhYeahOkayThen · 28/09/2018 18:48

@Rebecca899

"my 9 years old already hates hand me down and i saw a lovely coats in asda that she wants but my husband not havinh it .. he thinks with that money we can pay bills and buy foods and not to be waste on coats which they dont need ."

Bills and food are much more important then coats that aren't needed. I didn't always like wearing hand-me-downs as a kid but I disliked not having food to eat or running water more.

If a new coat is actually needed try gumtree and eBay for good deals on new or nearly new coats.

HighwayDragon1 · 28/09/2018 18:51

DD has three coats, a Mac, a warmer waterproof and her winter coat. Her warmer waterproof I bought 2/3 years ago and still looks and fits well. Winter coat was last year's but will do another year. Mac's get replaced regularly as she rips them easily Hmm

Pompom42 · 28/09/2018 21:09

I buy my youngest a new coat each year. She's tiny so they all fit. But I still feel I have to buy a new one each year. So she has about 5 coats, plus a denim jacket, raincoat and cape!
I love coats tbh as this is what you see more than the clothes in Winter

TeenTimesTwo · 28/09/2018 21:38

I found winter coats would generally do 3 years:
Year 1 - a bit big
Year 2 - just right
Year 3 - getting small on arm length but OK
Then usually a year sometimes 2 in the cupboard and passed on to DD2 for a further 3 years. DD2 hates clothes shopping so is more than delighted when 'new' clothes just turn up.

Mine tended to have 3 coats each

  • 1 spring-summer-autumn waterproof
  • 1 winter coat
  • 1 lightweight pack-mac
Occasionally an additional 'smart' winter coat if I found one pre-loved.
Scatteredthoughtss · 28/09/2018 21:45

three, but one is an accidental purchase for the eldest, thought it was going to be warmer, and DD has one that she inherited from a her brother plus a jacket that I got second hand.

Rebecca899 · 29/09/2018 13:35

Thank you so much everyone
