Hi everyone im just curious to knows how many coats your children have each and do you buy them new ones every winter ?

My dc have a winter coat and a rain jacket/coat.
As long as the coats are in good condition, I agree with your dh. I recently got dd1 old coat out for dd2, and was dismayed to find it had been put away with a rip in a sleeve. So it will need replacing. They are expensive and I’d rather spend my money on something more exciting than a new coat.

I’m ever hopeful that a coat will last a couple of years too, but that doesn’t generally seem to be the case, either the zip will break, the hood will be ripped off (ds-playing football on the playground), it will be lost (and then after I’ve waited a couple of weeks for it to turn up, it will be found). Or something else will happen that means it needs replacing.

DD1 (5) has a denim jacket, What I call an autumn jacket for chillier/wet days and her padded winter jacket. The autumm and winter jackets are from last year.

DD2 (2) has a autumn jacket and a winter coat. She will probably get a new winter coat but next year will have her sisters old jackets if still in good condition

Ds 13 one, possibly two. Dd 17 too numerous to count.

xJessica · 27/09/2018 22:54

Usually just one winter one that lasts 2 years and a thinner waterproof one for cooler summer days and spring/milder autumn days. This is the first year she's got 2 winter ones but both should last 2 years and it allows for washing or accidentally leaving one in the car after the weekend when DH goes to work!

babbscrabbs · 27/09/2018 22:56

We have various coats for the DC but all have been hand me downs from friends and relatives except one.

Agustarella · 27/09/2018 22:57

DS 17 has one coat which is now too small, but he hates shopping and hates everything I choose for him, so getting a new one will not be easy. The girls (13 and 9) seem to have accumulated loads, but the general principle is that they have one nice new dressy coat from Monsoon plus a padded anorak type thing with a hood, which they don't like wearing but it saves the nice coat from being ruined on long cross-country walks. The anorak coats are often secondhand provided I can find them in good enough condition.

bridgetoc · 27/09/2018 22:59

DS 16 has lots, but he loves clothes.

DS 11 has five.

bellsbuss · 27/09/2018 23:08

They have a school/nursery coat, raincoat, smart coat , casual coat and a winter coat.

AveEldon · 27/09/2018 23:12

One winter, one summer raincoat, one school coat
I only buy new when they are outgrown

OwlinaTree · 27/09/2018 23:13

thebigfatmermaid is your 13 yo not planning on going outside at all over the autumn/winter? Surely she'll need a coat at some point?

CountFosco · 27/09/2018 23:16

We don't buy new coats every winter, the kids don't grow that quickly! They all have a thick warm coat and a rain coat, plus hoodies for the summer. Coats are always handed down the family.

SarahH12 · 27/09/2018 23:20

We buy new every winter as she grows so quickly. DSD (6) currently has one thin waterproof coat, one thick waterproof coat, one showerproof coat and one thick coat. The two waterproof ones stay at ours as she does a lot of long walks with us. The other two go between our house and her Mum's. It's quite possible she has more at her Mum's too.

TheCriminalMind · 27/09/2018 23:22

My DS has a rain coat, a “posh” coat, a Parker coat, a winter coat and a nursery coat (can you tell that I enjoy buying coats Grin)

DoubleFunMum · 27/09/2018 23:23

Mine have three each. A waterproof one (bought my dm), an arctic conditions one (bought by mil) and the one they actually wear most, a mid-weight one bought by me in H&M sale that is showerproof. I have bought the next size up for when they grow out of them. Sometimes we layer with a fleece (cheap, Mountain Warehouse ones) if really cold. I'd rather they also had a smart coat but it's a luxury & with no chance of hand-me-downs (twins) it isn't a priority!

SarahH12 · 27/09/2018 23:23

That second thick one I mentioned is just one of those warm winter ones. She wouldn't have as many if she lived with us permanently tbh, we'd just stick with the thin waterproof and thick waterproof (far more functional!).

I think your DH is right about passing them down. Sort of wish we had another one so DSD could pass hers on / have some passed down.

megletthesecond · 28/09/2018 06:36

Just remembered that as well as two winter coats mine have two rain coats, again one for school and one for home.

randomsabreuse · 28/09/2018 06:41

DD has 4. 1 from Lidl, 1 hand me down and 2 from Aldi - 1 is a ski jacket and the other is a lightweight rain coat. Lidl one is a middle weight and was a gift. All are coming into their 2nd year and might well fit next year. Hand me down is recent but on 3rd/4th owner at least!

Chrisinthemorning · 28/09/2018 06:46

Too manyHmm
School wool duffle coat, 2 warm winter coats one from Boden and one from Trespass which is more for outdoor activities, a Hatley raincoat, a cagoule, a pac a mac.
Not all new though, a few from eBay. Once outgrown they are either re- ebayed or given to my friend who has twins 15 months younger.

BarbarianMum · 28/09/2018 06:52

Ds2 wore ds1's old winter coat for years. I agree w your dh - silly to buy new if you dont have to.

Ellisandra · 28/09/2018 06:58

YABU.
Doubly so if money is an issue.

Even if it isn’t - I don’t think it’s good for kids to grow up getting brand new every year when there are perfectly good hand md downs. Yes, it’s nice to sometimes buy new because no-one wants to be child #5 never getting to choose. But it’s good for kids to grow up with a “reduce, reuse, recycle” mindset.

Sounds like you just like shopping (saying it’s boring re-using, saying there are lovely coats... yeah, coats didn’t change that much since last year!) - I’d despair if my partner was wasting money indulging their own need to shop over sending a positive message to kids.

Sirzy · 28/09/2018 06:59

Thick winter coat and a rain coat. Both generally last 2 years at least, when I know it will need replacing for the next year I get one in the sale to have ready. Means I can get a better quality coat and no “oh shit it’s snowing and we haven’t got a coat” moments!

MaverickSnoopy · 28/09/2018 07:07

Similar situation here - two girls with a third due next week. My eldest has a nice winter coat, a school coat, a raincoat and a summer jacket. I always size up so they last 2 years, the summer coat has lasted 3. If they are in good enough condition they are passed on. I've just bought dd2 a new winter coat because the handmedown was quite faded and tired looking. I wouldn't expect her to wear that. Then again this is my rule for all clothes and I budget for new clothes for all children.

OneStepSideways · 28/09/2018 07:08

My DD has:

A padded winter coat
A ski jacket
2 fleece-lined raincoats
A raincoat without fleece (for warm wet days)
A padded gilet

I bought all of them second hand (good quality brands) and they get muddy so there's always 1 or 2 waiting for a wash. They have to be reproofed every wash so I wait until I have enough for a load. She often leaves one at nursery so I like having spares.

I'll keep most of them to hand down to siblings, it seems wasteful to buy new!

SagelyNodding · 28/09/2018 07:12

My 2 sons have loads! Mostly hand-me-downs though. They both have a favourite one which they pretty much wear all winter-usually a ski jacket type, even if it isn't best suited to the weather...

Di11y · 28/09/2018 07:15

Waterproof and warm one but will be handed down.
