DC1 has a 3 in 1 waterproof fleece contraption and a big long puffa one with a furry hood.

DC2 has a fleecy lined waterproof one and again a long puffa one with a furry hood, although this might not fit this year.

Now ask me about general coats... They have more coats than anyone could possibly ever need!

GoodbyeSummer · 28/09/2018 09:25

2 each: a light jacket and a thicker, warm winter coat. No real need for anything else.

happymummy12345 · 28/09/2018 09:28

One. At his abs clothes last about a year. So he gets a new one when he needs the next size up

Spudlet · 28/09/2018 09:28

Four at the moment, but only one definitely fits. His thin raincoat is possibly outgrown, as are his coats from last year (a smarter coat bought by my DM that was for v cold weather, and a cheaper three in one job that was for getting mucky). Hoping at least one of those will fit again this year, but we need a trying on session.

Enb76 · 28/09/2018 09:30

A waterproof and a ski jacket.

We ski so the jacket doubles up as sports gear as well as general winter gear. We also cycle so the waterproof is in use all year and child has more pairs of good gloves than coats. Coats are very big the first year and slightly short the second year.

I buy good coats, sell them on after use and get about half the money back.

mostdays · 28/09/2018 09:31

3 each- a winter one (these tend to get replaced every winter as they outgrow them too fast to last for 2 years), a mac (we live in Manchester and you need a waterproof which is lightweight for the 'spring' and 'summer') and a midway one for when a mac isn't warm enough and a winter coat is too warm.

DS1's coats usually get handed down to DS2 if they haven't been ruined, but DS3 is almost 6 years younger than DS2 and I haven't the storage space to keep things for 6 years to pass on to him...

motortroll · 28/09/2018 09:35

One rain coat and a winter coat for all. My older two also have a "fancy" coat each lol one has s biker style jacket and one a faux fur.

I always end up with too many coats as my mum gets them in the charity shop about 3 sizes too big and by the time they fit my kids I've forgotten about them and already bought something else!!

They also all have hi vis jackets for bikes. I suppose they're coats?

motortroll · 28/09/2018 09:37

I only get new when they don't fit. With my 9 year old that's every flipping year! 11 year old still fits the save one she's had for 2 years previous but it doesn't fit over her blazer for school so I'll have to get another. It's not black anyway which she has to have for school.

motortroll · 28/09/2018 09:37

I agree with your husband. I wish I could hand things down but my eldest are the same size!

lalalalyra · 28/09/2018 09:38

Mine get a new coat each winter until they stop growing. I'll pass down most things, but I don't do coats because I have a thing about it. I never, ever got the fun of the new coat shopping because I had my sister's hand-me-downs (she's several years older than me). The only time I had a coat that was 'mine' was when I got one for Christmas one year. Their old coats are either a second weekend/playing out coat if passed on or they go to Women's Aid locally.

Orangecake123 · 28/09/2018 09:42

Growing up we usually just had one each until we out grew it or it was damaged, but it was usually the same one for atleast a few years. The coat I have now is around 5 years old and originally my sisters. I can see your husbands point of view, I wouldn't buy new ones unless they needed them.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 28/09/2018 09:42

2 oldest dc (8&7) have 1 each that they wear all the time but they're the ones with a removable fleece so they have that taken out in the summer months. They're like me & prefer a zip up hoodie if they don't fancy wearing their other coat. Dc1 is due a new one though & has said she'd like the same type again as it's apparently really warm with the fleece in (I beleive her because dc2 hasn't moaned).

Dc3(5) has 2, a waterproof jacket & a big winter coat.

Dc4(3) has 3, a fleece, rainsuit & winter coat.

Dc5(1) has 3, a thick hooded jumper & 2 snowsuits.

I have 2, a rain coat & a winter coat. I wear a hoodie over a thin jumper in cooler but not cold or wet weather.

Dh has his supplied by work & seems to have an endless amount.

FizzyWizzyFlash · 28/09/2018 09:43

One gillet each
2 winter coats each
1 fleece each
1 raincoat each
1 padded raincoat each
1 super thick fleece thick cardigan each
1 all in one wet suit

We use them all.

But some of them have lasted two years and still going strong.

Always buy a size up.

DS is petite so I expect his coats will last him four years. He's had them two years and still drowns in them all.

DD also has a school uniform fleece rain jacket and a school uniform fleece top for PE.

We do get so much use out of everyone of them because we are outside everyday for at least an hour or two.

Didn't buy them all at once though. They were bought over a period of time depending on what the weather was like and what type of coat we needed.

Jeanclaudejackety · 28/09/2018 09:45

School coat, pac a mac type thing and a nice dress coat (this years is tartan)

Jeanclaudejackety · 28/09/2018 09:46

Also various zippy Hoodies and a cheapy fleece zip up from home bargains (4 quid!!)

unlimiteddilutingjuice · 28/09/2018 09:49

Three each:
One thin autumn type coat
One rain coat
One thick winter coat

AhYeahOkayThen · 28/09/2018 09:50

@Rebecca899

Your husband sounds very sensible with money. There's nothing wrong with younger siblings wearing hand-me-downs, as long as they're still in good condition.

HilaryBriss · 28/09/2018 09:55

Whilst I can see the reasons for hand-me-downs, I feel very sorry for the younger girls who will forever be wearing their older sisters cast offs whilst the eldest get nice new stuff.

onestitchaway · 28/09/2018 10:03

Oldest DD quite a few now I’ve thought about it Blush

1 thick winter coat with hood
1 rain jacket with fleece inside
1 good quality rain jacket (Berghaus)
1 thin rain jacket (supermarket)
1 denim jacket
One smart ‘occasion’ jacket

She’s 9 and doesn’t grow much so can generally get 2 years out of them.

My son is 2 so atm I have to buy every year. He has 1 thick winter coat, 1 rain jacket and 1 denim jacket with fleece inside

I would definitely save for next DC if I could. Does seem a little wasteful if they’re in good condition.

Like another poster said. I only have 1 Hmm

OutPinked · 28/09/2018 10:04

Two winter coats and a summer jacket each.

Rebecca899 · 28/09/2018 10:09

Thank you everyone for your lovely comments ,my 3 youngest are 9,8 and 5 years old and my 9 years old already hates hand me down and i saw a lovely coats in asda that she wants but my husband not havinh it .. he thinks with that money we can pay bills and buy foods and not to be waste on coats which they dont need .

fleshmarketclose · 28/09/2018 10:10

Dd never grows and hasn't for the last four years so she has new coats each year whilst her old coats are still as good as new and fit. Currently she has a parka, a coat for school, a smart woollen coat, a waterproof coat, a leather jacket that she wears and then a couple of older coats as spares.

Ixnayonthehombre · 28/09/2018 10:14

My toddler ended up with two pram suits and 3 coats last year. Often I end up accidentally doubling up with my older kids, but they have to have the school cost so it's that, plus one fun bright winter coat (Boden usually) and then usually desperate waterproofs. If you are bored of the old coats why not eBay them and buy different ones from eBay? I often do that.

Ilovehamabeads · 28/09/2018 10:15

Can’t get DS to wear a coat, ever. He has no winter coat and hasn’t for the past 2 years. He’ll wear one of those pac-a-mac things if it’s particularly wet but apart from that he’d rather just wear a hoodie and be wet Confused

MrsMarigold · 28/09/2018 10:24

Wow, my two each have a raincoat and one other warm coat from joules. They also have their school coats but never wear them out of school as they have the school crest on them. If it wasn't compulsory to wear the school coats they wouldn't have them. I buy the coats in the sales.
