Loads of coats for the youngest as I kept my older sons coats as he grew up and we get them given from cousins too. His winter coat from last year fits fine as well. He probably has seven coats.
My eldest has a thick down coat from Joules which is beautiful and a shorter puffa type one from Next then just wears tracksuit top ones until it’s too cold for them.
Both of his main coats are into their second year.

BlueJava · 28/09/2018 07:30

One thick winter coat each and one rain jacket each. I just replace when they grow out of them or buy one in the next size up in a sale if they are starting to need it. No hand downs as they are twins and the same size.

I spent £11 on this last year, it still fits DD now.

Mine have one thick winter coat, one less thick winter coat, and then waterproof mac which is only really for summer or mild weather like we have now.

They do have a selection of bomber jackets/cargo jackets etc too.

I have to buy new every year due to size but my youngest has inherited a couple of the coats of they are still in a good condition

Phillipa12 · 28/09/2018 07:40

I have 3ds's and their coats last 2 years, 1 winter coat and 1 summer coat. Eldest gets new and then they are handed down if still in good nik, so far have not had one thats been trashed enough not to be handed down.

SleepyMcEdie · 28/09/2018 07:44

DS (almost 2) has two of everything below as he keeps one set at the childminders.
Rain coat
Thick winter coat
Puddle suit
Thick snowsuit
Waterproof dungarees

puzzledlady · 28/09/2018 07:44

Too many as the godparents of both my children have no children so all their money goes on my two. I see your husbands point of view re hand me downs though. Why waste a good coat?

EndOfDiscOne · 28/09/2018 07:49

Too bloody many! As fast as I reduce down the coat collection my mum spots a good "bargain" and replenishes it. At the moment probable 3-4 thick coats each, school coat, couple of raincoats and fleece jackets ahoy.

KenAdams · 28/09/2018 07:52
  1. Two for school in case one is lost, a nicer one for the weekends and a rain coat.
Littleoakhorn · 28/09/2018 07:59

My 2 dc both have a warm winter coat, a summer raincoat and a smartish duffle coat. The raincoat and duffle coats will be handed down, since they’re unisex. The warm winter coats come as a set with lined waterproof trousers, which get trashed so we buy new each year. I live in Germany though, the winters are colder than in England and there’s an expectation from kindergarten that the kids will play outside regardless of the weather.

neversleepagain · 28/09/2018 08:00

Mine have a raincoat, thin lined jacket for early autumn and late spring. A light coat and a thick coat for very cold weather.

Odoreida · 28/09/2018 08:13

Very worried about the 13 year old girl who doesn't go outside during the winter, and hope it was a joke.

Odoreida · 28/09/2018 08:14

My son has a winter coat that he's had for 3 years, an extra one that we bought from Asda when we forgot that one, a good raincoat from the neighbours who inherited stuff from posh skiing family, a gilet from my mum and quite a lot of hoodies, also hand-me-down from cousins/ friends.

kaytee87 · 28/09/2018 08:17

Off the top of my head my 2yo has; one waterproof lined coat, 1 cosy body warmer, 1 thin shower resistant jacket and 1 waterproof all in one.
He also has a warm winter coat and waterproof lined coat that are a bit too big at the moment.
I wouldn't be able to reuse any the next year atm as he's still growing quickly. If something was in good condition and still fit then I'd reuse.

Marmite27 · 28/09/2018 08:17

Last years aldi ski jacket is still going strong. A thin rain jacket and a thicker one. Plus a puddle suit, and a thick non-waterproof knitted jacket from Trepass. And a gillet.

So 3 plus 3 not quite coats, but live in the coat cupboard.

There’s a thick winter coat waiting in the cupboard and we’ll probably get a new ski jacket from aldi when they do them. All will be handed down to her sister though.

StylishMummy · 28/09/2018 08:23

I have 2 DDs, 16m between them and I'm already passing down everything I can

NoFucksImAQueen · 28/09/2018 08:29

3- 2 thick and 1 rainjacket. it was actually my mum that said to keep 2 of the thicker ones incase it was ever a really stormy day and their main coats got soaked or dirty at school and needed washing etc.

Sierra259 · 28/09/2018 08:34

We have a warm school one and 2 lightweight waterproof ones - though the non-school one of those was a gift. Currently trying to decide if we need a non-school warm winter one. However I would always pass the coats down to younger DC's if they're in good enough condition.

MrsStrowman · 28/09/2018 08:39

Could they rotate so each year some of them get new and some get hand downs but not the same children every year, it doesn't seem fair for the youngest as they get older to never have a choice when the eldest will always have brand new. You could sell some of all of their bits to fund coats for the little ones

anitagreen · 28/09/2018 08:39

A summer coat, a light jacket, two winter coats each. And then my nana will always get a new one too from m&s.

Runrunrudolf · 28/09/2018 08:58

We all have one each, DCs has lasted for three years as they have not grown and it's not worn but when it does it will replaced.

I used to buy a new one every year or sometimes two every year for DS beca2he kept losing them or saying "it doesn't look good anymore" "it feels weird" despite being at university he has not changed and in fact does not wear them anymore as he's never cold Hmm suits him, I have a big coat and 3 jackets Grin

It's honestly up to you if you buy them a new one every year, I had a word with DC and they said they'd rather have that money spent on more(typical) or saved away for them :)

Juanbablo · 28/09/2018 09:00

Usually 2. One raincoat and one warm winter coat. But ds1 has two extra coats for each football team he plays for. So he has 4.

Loonoon · 28/09/2018 09:06

If the older girls coats are in good condition definitely pass them on to the younger girls. It’s financially responsible as well as environmentally sound and it’s demonstrating to your DC that fashion/always having new stuff is not the most important thing in life.

If the younger ones are starting to mind that they never get to choose their own clothes take them on a little shopping trip and give them a small budget to buy something of their own choice. I am willing to bet they won’t choose to spend it on a coat which to my DC was always a dull necessity.

StartingAgain1 · 28/09/2018 09:06

For some reason my Dd has 6 coats/jackets (which seems ridiculous) and 8 month old has 3. How old are the youngest 3, it's a shame if they always have to wear hand me downs but if they are young enough not to notice I would reuse the eldest coats if they are in good condition.
