I spent £80 odd once buying Blush suede and peony perfume. I sprayed the tester lavishly, fell in love with it... and bought. By the time I'd got back to the car, I had a sickly headache and couldn't wash it off quickly enough. Even smelling it on DD that I gave it to made me feel queasy. I've since been given Orange Blossom as a gift which is inoffensive but the smell has gone within an hour. It's all very clever PR really. Bit like Charlotte Tilbury.... Rimmel quality in a fancy container.

EggMayonnaise · 15/09/2018 13:08

I love Jo Malone candles, I find they scent the whole room. I have used many other brands, including the Aldi dupes and they come nowhere close imo in terms of fragrance and longevity.

I haven't tried Jo Loves yet, but I'm going to as soon as the Christmas range is out.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 15/09/2018 13:10

It’s because Jo Malone is no longer Jo Malone and hasn’t been for some time. I think it’s Estée Lauder now.

Jo Loves is beautiful. Like Jo Malone used to be. But better.

ThatLibraryMiss · 15/09/2018 13:34

The Perfume People do some good knock-offs. Their verbena from the province is lovely, and supposed to be very similar to JM's Verbena de Provence. The little roll-ons are a good size to pop in your handbag.

KenAdams · 15/09/2018 13:46

No it's just all mass produced rubbish now Estee Lauder own it. I much prefer Miller Harris.

Eliza9917 · 15/09/2018 13:55

Anyone that pays £75 for a candle is fucking deranged.

Branleuse · 15/09/2018 13:58

ive got an absolutely gorgeous Jo Malone perfume, but the smell is gone after half an hour, which means I occasionally spray it on myself for comfort, but its a bit of a waste of money as a perfume really, and it was not cheap

ProcrastinatingPingu · 15/09/2018 14:01

I’m with Eliza, I’ll stick to my Woodwick & Yankee candles.

disorganisedXX · 15/09/2018 14:04

I have an excellent nose and agree Jo Malone is entirely hype.

JungWan · 15/09/2018 14:05

I agree, I had the grapefruit one (a gift) and it was actually horrible. Really sharp and it stuck in the back of your throat like hydrochloric acid after a vomit.
But that just wasn't to my taste perhaps others love it.

And I do love the pear and freesia and the sea salt but they last about half an hour. So expensive. If Hollister can make their eau d toilette last all day why can't jo Malone?

Agree. The Aldi knock offs are great though.

JungWan · 15/09/2018 14:06

ps I'm not comparing them, but my daughter's hollister reeks hours after she's put it on.

JungWan · 15/09/2018 14:09

these candles feel very luxurious but they're in the 25 euro price range

when the candle has burnt down and you put a tea light in, they glow beautifully. I thought 20 euro was a lot for a candle but I like that you're left with a nice tea light holder afterwards. I got the basil and lime, or coriander i think, it was very jo maloneish.

Honeyroar · 15/09/2018 14:09

I've had nicer smelling toilet cleaners than Jo Mallone perfume and there are a million cheaper candles that are just as good. It's just another designer name that people with more money than sense feel they have to buy.

afishnotabird · 15/09/2018 14:16

It irritates me that she goes on about growing up on a council estate in all her interviews, but sells products that the people she grew up with will not be able to afford.

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 15/09/2018 14:17

Jo Malone's perfumes are cologne- ue 3-5% perfume, 95% plus water. That's why they don't last. They are also very linear as fragrances so are never going to knock any socks off, no matter how nice that linear fragrance is. Factor in that many of them are citrus based (ie no longevity) and they're never going to hang around.
Jo Loves is a bit better- but unfortunately for JM herself, having given her own range her own name initially, and then presumably making a packet by selling it to EL (and it was water before she sold it) the JL range doesn't have the name-impact.
The JM ranges certainly get no love on our long running perfumista threads, whereas the Perfume Parlour knock-offs and the Superdrug range do (hey, at £5 what's not to like, they last longer too!)
If you want to spend £80 on a fancy schmancy black and white box (I rather think her marketing people thought she was going to be the next CC) for a bottle of scented water, then each to their own.
These days, apart from Christmas week I rarely see anyone except Japanese tourists in the shops.

fussychica · 15/09/2018 14:25

Slight thread derail but as you sound like a perfume expert bookme I love the smell of the new Gucci Bloom fragrance but won't pay that price as the longevity is poor - on me anyway. Do you know if there is a dupe or is it too soon?

Bluelady · 15/09/2018 14:30

Perfume Parlour is brilliant. I got their knock off of Malle's Portrait of a Lady which costs £££. The original didn't garner half the compliments of the knock off.

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 15/09/2018 14:45

fussy- probably not yet, if it is a recent one.

The only one on the PP site is called Goochi Blooming (bonkers name to avoid the lawsuits Grin) That will be the original Gucci Bloom knock off I expect.

AsleepAllDay · 15/09/2018 14:50

It is just a cologne but the price point would lead you to expect more silage. I love the wild fig cologne for summer but for those prices I rather prefer EDP

AsleepAllDay · 15/09/2018 14:52

@Eliza9917 Diptyque will give you a heart attack then!

RibbonAurora · 15/09/2018 15:05

JM is very much style over substance to me, the 'look' and packaging are nice but it's like the fragrances themselves are an afterthought, far too simplistic, one-noted and short-lived.

Eliza9917 · 15/09/2018 15:06

How much are diptyque or w/e it is? I don't think I want to know.

I won't even pay for large Yankee candles, I get the mini £1 ones.

I'm currently smelling eau de dog piss because the dog pissed on the floor overnight ffs. I've got bicarb on it at the mo and I've just lit a Lilly flame candle (set was a present) that seems to be helping. These are actually really good but I don't think I'd pay their prices, I'll stick to Yankee & Aldi.

Bluelady · 15/09/2018 15:09

I love a Dyptique candle but it's a very, very rare treat. I'm lusting over the advent calendar but it's over £300 😢

linkylink · 15/09/2018 19:44

I love diptyque & have about 5 of them but I find they last.
