@linkylink

The Blush Suede and Peony one for sure.

Aldi’s dupes of JM and B&H piss all over the originals however the JM Blush Suede and Peony Body Cream is divine, lasts for ages and makes your clothes small lovely too - it’s one of the exceptionally few high end products I really feel I’ve had a return on my investment with.

MaisyPops · 16/09/2018 09:06

What's with this increasing trend for

  1. 'women express an opinion on something'
  2. Other women turn up and accuse group 1 of either being jealous or (latest MN top word) 'sneering'
Bizarre. It happens on loads of threads on differed boards and seems to be 'don't express an opinion that is negative because otherwise someone will turn up claim you're judgey/sneering and imply they would never hold such a view ever'.

I think Jo Malone is a massive waste of money and can think of better things to spend my money on than an overpriced candle. Others might think my spending on walking boots is excessive. Neither is sneering.

Unfinishedkitchen · 16/09/2018 09:09

@MaisyPops, a PP said that anyone prepared to buy a JM candle was ‘deranged’, I’d call that sneering. People can spend their money how they like, there’s no need to suggest they have a mental illness becuase they choose to spend their money differently to you.

linkylink · 16/09/2018 09:15

PaulHollywoodsSexGut Thank you, an Aldi is opening near me soon & Im looking forward to it.

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 16/09/2018 09:20

Branleuse- which JM lime? I have the PP versions of both the Lime, Basil, Mandarin (although, every shop on every corner of every high street now does versions of it, it's getting a bit yawny really- I also have the Superdrug Basil Lime Mandarin (spot the careful name difference Grin)

Both of those are great, much longer lasting than the No Malone (as we call her on the perfumista thread)

I also have the PP Sweet Lime and something or other, but haven't really tried it yet.

Branleuse · 16/09/2018 09:26

@Bookmeonthesudexpress

Its not lime, its lime blossom, which is a floral not a citrus. Its incredible and my favourite spring summer scent, but ive not found anyone else that does a lime blossom/limeflower scent

MaggieAndHopey · 16/09/2018 09:30

I'm intrigued by mentions of Perfume Parlour and Perfume People. Can someone knowledgeable tell me how they make copies so cheaply and whether there's any dodginess involved? Are the ingredients natural extracts (or whatever the proper term is) or are they synthetic?

MaggieAndHopey · 16/09/2018 09:40

Actually I've just answered my own question by reading the front page of the Perfume Parlour site! Looks intriguing. I always want to be more of a perfume person but the expense involved is off-putting. It would be good to be able to experiment a bit.

MaisyPops · 16/09/2018 09:43

Unfinishedkitchen
Some are unkind posts.
I've just noticed on loads of threads lately that people saying they don't like things, this are silly, they don't get why people do X y z, having an opinion on bad behaviour, even calling a style of jeans mum jeans seems to attract the accusation of sneering.

Threehoursfromhome · 16/09/2018 09:52

I like them, though agree there is a hefty premium for the brand name.

The colognes don't have very good longevity but the dry body oils last for ages - a good 18 hours certainly - and you only need a small amount. So they work out similar in terms of value for money to high street brands, in my experience.

Unfinishedkitchen · 16/09/2018 09:58

@MaisyPops, that’s cool I do agree and also agree that it’s totally fine to say you don’t like something. I do it loads, for example, there’s a current thread running on how much the OP loves Manic Street Preachers and I commented along the lines that they sound repetitive and boring to my ear. I think it’s ok to say that but I wouldn’t say their fans are crazy for liking them, that’s going a bit too far. Play the ball not the man.

It’s possible to say that you think the candles are overated and overpriced for what you get/not value for money but it’s not cool to say that the buyer is immoral or crazy.

However, I totally get what you’re saying in that it’s ok to say you don’t like something.

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 16/09/2018 10:04

Branleuse- that's the one! Just been and checked my PP bottle

I'm not sneering at how people choose to spend their money. I spend an eye-watering amount of money on perfume- far more than I would on, say, clothes, or shoes.

I object to people being ripped off. If you think that your latest Chanel (etc) also has a mark up of about 95% on the cost of actually making the bottle of perfume you have in your hand (if not more- the rest is on mainly advertising, retail stands, trialling, sourcing ingredients, paying staff for months if not years of stirring up stuff in a big pot etc etc) then what % is the mark up for something that's legally, factually 95% water? I really like a lot of the JM smells (wood sage and seasalt is my favourite) but they are, without a doubt, one of the biggest fragrance rip-offs financially of all time.

AnythingButMagnolia · 16/09/2018 10:19

If we all only shopped in Aldi, we’d soon be in a lot of trouble

I don't know, if more people only shopped in Aldi, more people would have more disposable income to spend elsewhere in the economy!

(I do get what you mean though, I think.)

BlancheM · 16/09/2018 10:22

I bought some to give as presents and actually cringed because all the outer packing was over the top and luxurious but the actual candle lids were cheap and flimsy, and the plastic body lotions low quality.

sanssherif · 16/09/2018 10:25

Crap tatty waste of money

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 16/09/2018 10:26

Blanche- that was how I first experienced the brand- I always buy my Mum some high end smellies at Christmas and forked out (mainly because of MN hype I must admit- it would have been about 10 years ago I imagine, and product placement was rife on here) on some soaps and bath stuff.

SilverySurfer · 16/09/2018 10:52

There is another alternative - make your own candles. It's so easy and you can, with a bit of trial and effort, make the strength of the scent entirely to your liking.

Bluelady · 16/09/2018 12:24

If we all shopped in Aldi, there would be fewer people up to their eyeballs in debt.

I'm more than happy to spend £££ on high end cosmetics and scent if I think I'm getting value for money. No way would I buy JM when Aldi provides an equally good product for.a fraction the price. I do, however, treat myself to a Dyptique candle every Christmas because I get what I pay for.

AnythingButMagnolia · 16/09/2018 12:28

Blue lady- yes that's what I was trying to say (far less eloquently than you!)

I'm also not averse to paying more for something - but only if there is no cheaper alternative that I would be equally happy with.

Sugarplumfairy65 · 16/09/2018 12:42

Silverysurfer, each wax has a maximum fragrance load, so no, you can't get the strength as strong as you want. You risk the candle setting on fire is there's too much fragrance oil in it. The Lime, Basil & Mandarin is one of the candles I make. I've had the J Malones ones too but IMO mine have a better hot throw

SilverySurfer · 16/09/2018 13:00

Good point Sugarplumfairy65 Although in my case I find the scent of most bought candles too powerful so reduce accordingly on the ones I make. I've never tried making them, what would be to me, over scented.

BlueJava · 16/09/2018 13:02

YANBU - but then I don't buy any perfumes from anyone let alone Jo Malone.

MarshaBradyo · 16/09/2018 13:03

Yanbu

MaisyPops · 16/09/2018 13:09

BookMeOnTheSudExpress
I wonder that on high end fragrances.
All the pages in vogue, Cosmo etc must cost a small fortune. It's a lot to money spent to sell part of a lifestyle (most people wouldn't afford designed clothing but could manage a designer perfume).

Sugarplumfairy65 · 16/09/2018 14:03

SilverySurfer, a lot of the mass produced ones are over scented with poor quality fragrance oils, as you probably already know. Its frustrating when, as a candle maker you get told by a customer that they can buy a candle cheaper in the supermarket. I tell them to go ahead and continue to buy the supermarket ones. To buy good quality wax and fragrance oils costs a lot of money, the testing of each wax, fragrance, container and wick is expensive and time consuming, but when you get the perfect candle, its worth it.
