To think people should think before they get on a plane

Yeah yeah I know some people are scared of flying, but right now I have no sympathy.

Yesterday DH was on a 7pm flight from London to Barcelona. We live in the outskirts of Barcelona.

Everyone got on the flight then one woman decided she didn't want to fly after all. She got off the plane. This means that everyones hand baggage has to be rechecked. Then just as they are about to go. Another woman decides she is scared and wants her and her family off the plane. The second woman had hold baggage so that had to be taken off, then all hand baggage checked again. Because of this the runway slot had been missed so they had to wait again.
The plane landed after midnight.

The last train for DH to get home leave Barcelona centre at 11.55. The flight was due to get in at 10.20, no problem. Because of these two he had to get a taxi to another part of Barcelona, then a night bus. He got home just after 2.30am.

He's knackered and can't work today.

These two woman should have thought before they got on the fucking plane.

I agree they should have thought, but anxiety is a wonderful thing and if that is indeed what caused them to get off the plane maybe try cutting them some slack.

I can entirely understand your frustration, however.

Branleuse · 07/08/2018 09:11

That would fuck me off too. Take a valium ffs or dont fly. Its not obligatory. Dont piss everyone else about

Deshasafraisy · 07/08/2018 09:11

Maybe they watched “final destination” in the departure lounge

AndSpinAround · 07/08/2018 09:12

Usually I would cut them some slack but I'm not feeling it today.

Incredibly annoying but very rare I imagine. Sounds like your DH was unlucky.

AndSpinAround · 07/08/2018 09:15

I'm not sure it is that rare. It happened to me, just one woman, but with hold baggage that had to be taken off, last September.

Sorry but I'm thinking about that Simpsons episode where Marge freaks out and runs up and down the plane.

But I agree, very inconsiderate behaviour.

PatriciaHolm · 07/08/2018 09:15

Why on Earth was the hand baggage rechecked? That's not normal when someone deplanes.

I deplaned about a month ago (long story involving repeated delays and a meeting it became clear I was going to miss) and I just walked off, having asked first if it would cause problems. The air stewards said no, no issues and the plane actually then took off about 15 mins later.

If I'd had baggage that would have been another issue and I wouldn't have done it but just hand luggage really isn't an issue.

LeighaJ · 07/08/2018 09:17

I have a fear of flying and for some reason I once watched Final Destination the night before a trip.

I still got and stayed on the freaking plane cuz the world doesn't revolve around me and my anxiety.

NancyDonahue · 07/08/2018 09:19

That's bloody annoying but these things happen in life. Human beings aren't robots and sometimes find things so overwhelming they can't help their actions.

FlatPackFurnitureCompAnyone · 07/08/2018 09:19

I’m thinking that the wait and the first person getting off ended up triggering the second person. Anticipatory anxiety.

I agree, it’s terrible, but what can you do? It’s a medical condition and can really sneak up on people (I’m less sympathetic towards the first person to get off TBH. That was more predictable.)

AndSpinAround · 07/08/2018 09:20

DH actually works for an airline. Hand baggage rechecking is normal, just in case someone leaves something dodgy.

He said last night everyone had to say if each piece was there, one piece wasn't claimed so the air steward was about to take it off the plane when a man claimed it.

They might have told you it wouldn't cause problems/be a hassle, but that was probably to make you not feel bad.

MaryPoppinsBloomers · 07/08/2018 09:21

They would absolutely have to check hand baggage in case the departing passengers left something behind intentionally!

chocatoo · 07/08/2018 09:22

Bloody annoying. They are probably blissfully unaware of anyone else’s inconvenience.

AndSpinAround · 07/08/2018 09:22

*was there = was theirs

You’re also allowed to feel pissed off OP. You can be aware of the reasons why something might have happened and still feel bloody angry that it played out that way! You have my permission Wink We don’t have to be saintly and understanding ALL the time.

Thanks FlatPack I'm just so tired today.

SugarIsAmazing · 07/08/2018 09:25

This would have totally pissed me off

  1. Because of the massive inconvenience to everyone else.
  2. Because of the pure selfishness of the women involved, not caring about anyone else being delayed.
And 3. Why is it always a woman having a panic????
PatriciaHolm · 07/08/2018 09:29

Well, given the plane took off about 15 mins later they clearly didn't take long about any checks! They checked my seat after I'd stood up but can't have done much else.

I hope he's ok today though, must be shattered.

MyBrexitUnicornDied · 07/08/2018 09:29

Why is it always a woman having a panic????

Anxiety is more common in women?

I would be annoyed too op. How easy is it to get Valium prescribed for flights?

BarbaraofSevillle · 07/08/2018 09:29

I don't understand why hand baggage would have to be rechecked?

Everyone on the plane, including the person who has chosen not to fly, has been through security and then remained in a secure environment.

Hold luggage yes, hand luggage etc, surely not? Are you really saying everyone was taken off the plane (twice?) and put through security and boarding again?

I wish it had just taken off 15 minutes later. Add a couple of hours to that!

AveABanana · 07/08/2018 09:32

Last time we flew there was a family that had checked in but not made it onto the plane. Who does that? So we waited and waited... bearing in mind it was a weekly charter flight and their luggage was in the hold - and they had other family on the plane as well perhaps that was the problem and after 45 minutes their luggage was taken off. How can you get lost in an airport terminal, or forget you had a flight to take, and/or ignore all the callous and screens telling you to board?
