To think people should think before they get on a plane

Yeah yeah I know some people are scared of flying, but right now I have no sympathy.

Yesterday DH was on a 7pm flight from London to Barcelona. We live in the outskirts of Barcelona.

Everyone got on the flight then one woman decided she didn't want to fly after all. She got off the plane. This means that everyones hand baggage has to be rechecked. Then just as they are about to go. Another woman decides she is scared and wants her and her family off the plane. The second woman had hold baggage so that had to be taken off, then all hand baggage checked again. Because of this the runway slot had been missed so they had to wait again.
The plane landed after midnight.

The last train for DH to get home leave Barcelona centre at 11.55. The flight was due to get in at 10.20, no problem. Because of these two he had to get a taxi to another part of Barcelona, then a night bus. He got home just after 2.30am.

He's knackered and can't work today.

These two woman should have thought before they got on the fucking plane.

Are you usually so defensive OP?

Bombardier25966 · 07/08/2018 10:54

DH knows what a panic attack looks like, a full on one, and he said she wasn't like that. She just had a bad case of nerves (the second woman).

What does a full on panic attack look like? Do they all look the same?

HannahnotAgnes · 07/08/2018 10:54

No one knows why they were unable to fly though?

FWIW Op, I agree with you & would be seriously pissed off at the delay, inconvenience & additional cost involved. I do think it's selfish to behave that way - flying isn't compulsory so to disrupt everyone is the height of selfishness IMHO.

PorkFlute · 07/08/2018 10:54

Yes it’s unfortunate when flights are delayed and people miss important events. That doesn’t make ill people selfish for being ill!

taratill · 07/08/2018 10:56

I've been in the situation where my child was unable to board a flight due to crippling anxiety, which was previously, unexpressed/ undetected.

The departure was delayed for quite some time to see if he would be able to board but in the end it would not have been in his best interests health wise.

I think it is quite selfish to put your own tiredness/ slight inconvenience before someone who must have been in a pretty bad way to change their plans at the last minute. You would not get off a plane for the fun of it would you?

HannahnotAgnes · 07/08/2018 10:56

No one knows they were ill though Confused

AndSpinAround · 07/08/2018 10:56

Selfcentredbigot Sorry to burst your outraged bubble but he's far from lazy. One of the women was nervous, no idea why the first one got off.

*I have a fear of flying and for some reason I once watched Final Destination the night before a trip.

I still got and stayed on the freaking plane cuz the world doesn't revolve around me and my anxiety*

^^
This. I did exactly this myself once! Flying back from Thailand with a flight change in the middle and it was really turbulent. Still didn't get off though

I have a friend with a severe fear of flying. They will not get on a plane full stop. Drive (even if it takes a long time), or if going to the UK, drive then ferry. You don't have to fly, people do it because it's quicker.

Yeah, just get the ferry to Australia for a funeral. Or grab a lift to Los Angeles to see your sick mother before she dies.

blackteasplease · 07/08/2018 10:57

Tara I feel it's different if it's a child.

IDontEatFriedTurtle · 07/08/2018 10:59

But to delay several hundred of people and fuck with an airline operations because you can't sort your shit out... is totally unreasonable.

Presumably, the people involved didn't think they would be getting off the plane and don't really enjoy spending hundreds of pounds on nothing and waiting hours in an airport. I mean, maybe they are just horrible cunts. But it seems the less likely scenario.

AndSpinAround · 07/08/2018 10:59

Bombardier25966 In my case sometimes an ambulance because I can't breathe.

LEM Are you usually such a goady twat?

In my case sometimes an ambulance because I can't breathe.

So if it's not the same as you then it's not a panic attack?

AndSpinAround · 07/08/2018 11:01

IDontEatFriedTurtle They would never go to Australia or America because they won't get on a plane, no matter what circumstance.

AndSpinAround · 07/08/2018 11:03

Bombardier25966 I didn't say that did I.

Wow some people are determined for me to be the bad guy and pick holes. The professionally offended. Wow.

Selfcentredbigot · 07/08/2018 11:03

You call ambulances for your anxiety attacks - despite it being entirely medically unnecessary and a completely inappropriate misuse of resources - but berate these women for inconveniencing your lazy husband? Oh my.

Scifi101 · 07/08/2018 11:04

Your dp knows what a panic attack looks like when you have one he doesn't know what it looks like for other people.

CherriesAndGingham · 07/08/2018 11:04

Bombardier I think there's some confusion here about an anxiety attack vs a panic attack...

ExFury · 07/08/2018 11:05

I would have struggled not to be the second woman tbh. I seriously struggle to fly so I mostly avoid it. Once I’m on and the door is shut I have a resignation toward it. Someone else getting off would throw me massively and would take all my strength not to get off as well.

For that reason I only fly when absolutely essential (like my DD getting badly hurt when on holiday with her father or a family funeral)

BarbarianMum · 07/08/2018 11:06

Maybe airlines should start collating the names of people who disrupt flights and insist they are insured to cover the cost of future disruptions. Lots of people are anxious/very anxious about flying and being fucked around like this won't be helping their mental health any either.

Ghanagirl · 07/08/2018 11:06

@Selfcentredbigot
Your username very accurate!
Man is incredibly late home due actions beyond his control and he’s lazy and helpless.
What’s wrong with you?

PurpleDaisies · 07/08/2018 11:07

I still got and stayed on the freaking plane cuz the world doesn't revolve around me and my anxiety

Ffs. Is it really that difficult to understand that people have different triggers and different abilities to cope with situations?

This woman has a medical condition. The lack of understanding around it on this thread is really depressing.

SheWoreBlueVelvet · 07/08/2018 11:08

I feel for your husband. It's not just that he got in at 2.30 am. It's the stress of delays, not knowing what's happening how long it will take, stress over knowing you might miss your train. Then having to find a plan B to get home including having cash to pay for a cab, finding the right night bus and looking outfit the right stop when it's the middle of the night and you are knacked.
Not the same as being up until 2.30am and chilling in a restaurant or something.

LEMtheoriginal · 07/08/2018 11:10

No i am someone who cant fly due to anxiety and i feel sad that it deprives my family of holidays abroad. Id like to think that people would be understanding if i were to panic. Actually i think if i could get to the airport and sat on the plane I'd be ok. Im working on it. But perhaps i should jyst accept ill never fly. Maybe i wont . We are planning a holiday abroad next year. We'll be driving!

My question really wad regarding your rude response to people who disagree with you.

Ah well im off to enjoy my day...maybe you should stop brooding over this annoying incident and enjoy yours.

I often find ranting about things on aibu counterproductive - if people agree with me it fuels my ire..if they disagree its the same.
