To ask if anyone still uses a laptop/desktop PC

So DP just booted up my laptop for the first time in months to rearrange something that couldn't be changed by smartphone. I got all excited and told him to leave the PC on as I'd like to do some things - an hour later and I still have no real idea of what it is I want to do that I can't do on a smartphone or tablet.

Now there are things that CAN only be done with a computer (for example I can only pay my CC bill on a PC (which I do at work)). And IF I wanted to play WoW or Sims, that's a PC thing - but I honestly don't think I even have the patience for those except on the odd novel occasion. I game on the Xbox (which is very quick, better quality than my laptop and holds lots of data), I browse and watch videos on my phone, I listen to music on Amazon Music or Alexa so I'm not even sure what the point of my PC even is...

So AIBU to ask if anyone still uses their PC for everyday usage (not including work needs of course)>

No, in fact I've just got rid of it this week. I use my tablet a lot and have a smart tv for amazon/now tv and Xbox for gaming.
I do still have a laptop but only really use it when I need to do paperwork for work as I find word easier to use on it.

LockedOutOfMN · 04/08/2018 19:25

Laptop, use it every day during termtime (teacher), and whenever I need to do schoolwork in the holidays (today, for example).

JacquesHammer · 04/08/2018 19:26

Yup. I have all desktop, laptop, tablet and smartphone and use all mostly daily

9amTrain · 04/08/2018 19:30

I have and use mainly a desktop.

PedroLostHisGlasses · 04/08/2018 19:31

I use mine to Mumsnet - can't bear logging in through a phone, too much scrolling Grin and I play the Sims probably more than I should! I also prefer using my laptop to do things like looking up journeys, and doing StreetView if I'm going somewhere unfamiliar so I can see where I'm going... booking tickets (train, concert etc). I read the news on it too, and do all my internet banking and my online grocery shopping. Some of these things I could do through phone but I prefer the bigger screen on my laptop.

I am 29, my mum (in her fifties) rarely if ever uses a laptop, she has a tablet she uses for most things and a smartphone for video-calling her mum (who lives abroad) and her grandkids. I don't have a tablet, can't afford one and have a decent enough smartphone instead.

BlueBug45 · 04/08/2018 19:33

I don't have a tablet any more as I just got smartphones with large screens. Occasionally I access websites or download documents that don't work well/read on my smartphone and have to use a laptop. Also I do all my banking when I'm on a laptop as it's just easier particularly if some of the bills are electronic documents/emails.

tuppencenonethericher · 04/08/2018 19:35

Yes, things like applying for jobs, updating my CV, sorting my 1000s of photos of dc and spending about 100 hours a year creating the annual photobook, it's a must. Things like booking a holiday (I end up with about 50 tabs open!), paying bills or online banking it's just easier than my phone. Oh and checking the spam folder of my emails as it never loads properly on my phone for some reason! My credit card I can only do on my laptop too. I do also use it for occasional working from home, and share it with DH who uses it for bills and whatnot occasionally, so it's far from redundant.

I don't have a tablet though, just a phone and a laptop. I used to have a tablet before I had a smartphone, but after I had my phone it was the tablet I never used as everything could either be done on my phone or needed a PC! So when it died, I never replaced it. I'm more interested in what people use tablets for! Grin

MissusGeneHunt · 04/08/2018 19:35

Personal laptop and smartphone. Use a laptop for work as well. Use personal laptop for banking, smartphone for checking balance. Laptop also gets used for saving photos and editing, plus Word and Excel. Far prefer laptop for email, especially if they're long!!!

nocoolnamesleft · 04/08/2018 19:35

Desk top for work. Laptop for most stuff at home. Tablet for quick stuff at home (stays upstairs so don't have to carry laptop up/down). Phone for phonecalls/texts. But then I need a phone with a much longer battery life than any smartphone I can find.

Freshprincess · 04/08/2018 19:36

Yep, I've got both.

I use it for online banking, mine doesn't have an app and for Word, Excel. DCs use it for homework.

sirmione16 · 04/08/2018 19:36

I have a laptop for online uni course :)

AugustRose · 04/08/2018 19:37

I use a desktop for just about everything. I have a smartphone but just can't get used to the small screen for looking at stuff online, and if forms need completed it's a nightmare. We have a tablet but is needs a new screen thanks for DD1 Angry

I will hang on to my PC as long as possible.

MisAGenGastic · 04/08/2018 19:39

Laptop. Use it all day every day. I can't stand looking at things on a small screens, so can't imagine using my phone for anything other than whatsapp or spotify.

I play one game on the kids tablet. They barely use them either.

WorraLiberty · 04/08/2018 19:39

I mainly use a laptop

I like the big screen and I'm a fast touch typist.

I'm like a sloth when I'm trying to use a phone and the small screen does my head in.

ToadOfSadness · 04/08/2018 19:39

I have 2 laptops and I use them both. There is a smartphone on the side but the screen is too small for me to see properly. I also have an older phone which is not much use for internet but is fine as a phone. It means I can go out and not feel obliged to be messing about with a screen all the time and bashing into people in the street because I am not looking where I am going.

TorviBrightspear · 04/08/2018 19:40

I use a laptop a lot. Yes, I can do most stuff on a phone, but I do a lot of stuff for the PTA that involves typing, much easier on a laptop, plus I like bigger print for reading, and other things too.

MotherWilliam · 04/08/2018 19:43

Yep, desktop downstairs, laptop upstairs, used interchangeably for pretty well everything. Smartphone only for calls/texts/whasapp, can't see anything else on such a small screen!

Trills · 04/08/2018 19:43

I'm on a laptop right now.

Katinkka · 04/08/2018 19:45

Gaming pc
MacBook
Big iPad Pro
Small iPad Pro

Hardly use my iphone!

gamerwidow · 04/08/2018 19:45

I still use a laptop for most things at home. I don’t like using the touch screen interface for prolonged periods of time much prefer a keyboard.

BertieBotts · 04/08/2018 19:46

Yep, I love my desktop, wouldn't be without it! I have two screens and everything :o

I do mainly use it for stuff I could do on a phone/tablet, but I much prefer the experience of sitting at a desk and using a proper keyboard. I feel it's way harder to write long posts without one. I like the fact I can listen to music while I post/browse. The screen quality is really nice, and I have it set up the way I want it, without constant updates annoying me. I don't need to worry about battery life. I like the way it's easier to have multiple tabs open, and I don't need to worry about it overheating. The screen stays clean because I'm not constantly touching it. I like the experience of watching Netflix etc on a larger screen with decent sound quality.

Then there's stuff I can't do easily on a tablet - proper photo editing of raw files, gaming, modding, I find it easier to deal with spreadsheets and so on on my computer as well. I'm not a huge gamer so I do prefer the computer for the games I do play, not a console. But mainly I spend time browsing.

I rarely use our tablet and don't actually know where it is. The only time I ever really use the tablet/laptop is when we travel or if I'm ill and want to watch TV in bed. That's really all it's good for IMO. Otherwise I prefer to use my phone or the desktop.

Vanillaradio · 04/08/2018 19:52

My ancient desktop has just died. I will probably be buying a laptop...because I want to play the Sims. Not sure Sims 2 which is my favourite version will run on a new computer though so might have to make do with Sims 4!

Stuckinthis · 04/08/2018 19:52

I'm surprised so many people still use a laptop for normal day-to-day usage. Personally for me it just seems a bit of an effort plugging it in and booting it up for little gain.

So I suppose my next question is what people use their laptops for that you can't do on a smartphone or tablet (obviously some people mentioned that a smartphone is too small for them so I mean aside to that)?

I use my laptop daily.

Hate the faff of touchscreen and I have a MacBook so it only takes seconds to load. Tablets are a waste of money in my opinion and I'd never buy one. There's nothing a phone can't do that a tablet can these days.

Returnofthesmileybar · 04/08/2018 19:54

Yep, hate tablets and just bought myself a lovely new laptop, much prefer using them
