To ask if anyone still uses a laptop/desktop PC

So DP just booted up my laptop for the first time in months to rearrange something that couldn't be changed by smartphone. I got all excited and told him to leave the PC on as I'd like to do some things - an hour later and I still have no real idea of what it is I want to do that I can't do on a smartphone or tablet.

Now there are things that CAN only be done with a computer (for example I can only pay my CC bill on a PC (which I do at work)). And IF I wanted to play WoW or Sims, that's a PC thing - but I honestly don't think I even have the patience for those except on the odd novel occasion. I game on the Xbox (which is very quick, better quality than my laptop and holds lots of data), I browse and watch videos on my phone, I listen to music on Amazon Music or Alexa so I'm not even sure what the point of my PC even is...

So AIBU to ask if anyone still uses their PC for everyday usage (not including work needs of course)>

Desktop is used by teen for Minecraft (she does have it on her Xbox but plays on certain servers online)

I use laptop for uni work (OU) and maybe YouTube if I can be bothered to sit upright in bed (if not then I watch on my phone so I can lay down). Oh and online shopping (not just food but other things as well).

I do use my phone mainly for MNing, banking and playing random games (and occasionally when feeling sociable texting and at at a push talking to people!)

My tablet barely gets used.

Moreisnnogedag · 04/08/2018 21:21

Laptop for excel mainly but also PowerPoint/word.

Noodledoodledoo · 04/08/2018 21:22

I use my laptop all the time.

I hate the one finger typing you have to do on an ipad. I can touch type and I find it really annoying on the ipad.

Husband gave me his old ipad, apart from games I hated it and did nothing in it that was useful.

On my laptop I do banking, spreadsheets, work, powerpoints, lesson planning, letter writing, ebaying, internet, not a fan of a lit of sites on my phone.

I'll be the dinosaur with the laptop in 20 years!

I don't think I've booted up my laptop in over a year (MacBook Air) as I use my iPad Pro constantly and my phone quite a bit. It's presumably still sat in a cupboard in the sitting room, with a very dead battery.
I love my iPad and do all my banking on my iPad or phone and use them for everything, listening to audiobooks etc.
My DH, OTOH, only uses his desktop Mac as he doesn't own a smartphone or tablet device. He hates all tech and still keeps a tiny notepad and pen in his pocket at all times, just in case. I have to help him regularly when he has a tech problem with say, the online banking system or an email glitch.
Funnily enough at breakfast today, DH mentioned a tech problem he needed help with and 9 yr old DS pipes up 'I can sort that out for you dad'.
Fabulous. I think I'm redundant. Grin

Desktop at home for many things because it's better for my posture and allows a better distance between me and my screen, I also have a linux system in addition to a windows one and prefer a proper keyboard. Laptop (detachable screen but rarely used) because I like having a significant amount of inbuilt storage. Chromebook for the basics at high speed.

ILoveMyDressingGown · 04/08/2018 21:58

I use my laptop for editing and storing photos as well as uploading them onto the cloud/transferring them to my external hard-drive/transferring to my phone to print.

I can't edit them properly on my phone as the screen is just too small and my fingers are too big. I use a wacom tablet with it so I can be even more precise.

I don't like saving them all to my phone as its too easy for it to get nicked, dropped, broken or lost.

I am a supply teacher and if I get a longer term post and have to do planning etc them it's easier to do that on a laptop and a full sized keyboard. I hate typing on my phone!

eurochick · 04/08/2018 22:01

I've got a laptop (with dock and double screen) for work but most of the time for personal stuff I use my phone or iPad. The one thing I can't do on those that I still use a laptop for is making digital photo albums. If you are doing a card with a couple of photos then the app is fine but for a whole book I need a computer.

PlatypusPie · 04/08/2018 22:04

iPhone SE which I only tend to use for rare actual calls and when I am out and about. Screen too small to do things easily but also slips nicely in handbag. WhatsApp.

iPad mini that I use most of all at home . . Email and iMessage synced so appears on phone at same time ( plus useful call handoff). Use for browsing, social media and watching catchup TV.

Laptop quick to boot - use it to access and check other emails that I don’t have on tablet/phone, for writing any major like letters ,for some online shopping out of app, for online banking , for Excel for things like organising sports club events, for backing up photos, for photo editing for document and file storage, complicated visa applications for travels, on line tax, online passport applications.......

PC - hardly ever. I specced it, sourced and installed it and maintain it, use it to manage our broadband but it’s my DH’s preferred technology so he mainly uses it.

We have a Smart TV that we only use in dumb mode !

gamerwidow · 04/08/2018 22:05

As others have said things like spreadsheets, editing documents, typing long emails and navigating some websites are so much easier on a laptop or desktop. Completing forms in particular is a pita on a phone or tablet especially select boxes and radio buttons.
I do use my phone a lot too. I'd be interested OP if you do a job that requires a lot of computer use. I'm a programmer and I suspect anyone who has to use a PC for heavy technical use at work will probably find it easier to use a PC than a phone for most stuff at home.

Racecardriver · 04/08/2018 22:09

I prefer to online shop on my laptop. I also use it for Netflix. I prefer it for Facebook as well.

Processedpea · 04/08/2018 22:10

I type faster on a keyboard so like to use the desktop for that

OliviaStabler · 04/08/2018 22:11

I use my PC a lot. Much prefer it to a mobile

ClarkWGriswold · 04/08/2018 22:16

Yes, laptop, iPad and phone all used daily. I use my laptop when working from home and take it to work if I’ve got a meeting and DH uses it for studying. DDs like to use it to muck around on CBBC and CBEEBIES websites. We’ve got a Windows Surface 2in1 that boots up in seconds.

My38274thNameChange · 04/08/2018 22:17

I have a laptop and two desktops at home plus a work laptop.

Work laptop and both desktops get used daily by various family people. The gaming laptop is hardly ever used these days.

I may have spent my entire day playing on the Sims.

SenecaFalls · 04/08/2018 22:17

I have a desktop at work and I use the laptop when I work at home. I do a lot of writing and editing long documents, and I also work with spreadsheets. For mumsnetting and other amusements, I usually use my phone or my tablet.

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 04/08/2018 22:17

Desktop for me, but I use it for work (self-employed). Occasionally laptop. Hardly ever use tablets/phones and couldn't care less about gaming!

tuppencenonethericher · 04/08/2018 22:17

Until recently I'd have said I needy laptop to write formal letters (which in itself is rarer nowadays, usually a clear email suffices). But when on holiday I needed to write a letter, and discovered I could actually do even that on my phone (though it was a bit more fiddly).

Sorry, this made me laugh! Grin You could try paper! Wink Grin

reeldoop · 04/08/2018 22:19

I do everything on a smartphone and laptop, use both equally. For work I have a docking station and 2 screens for the laptop and a wireless keyboard and mouse so use it like a desktop I guess.

Believeitornot · 04/08/2018 22:22

We have a PC - need one because dh works from home and doesn’t have a laptop provided (that’s the public sector for you).

I use it a fair bit because I prefer it for surfing etc and doing random research. Setting up spreadsheets - much better than my cheap laptop. Plus better storage eg for photos. And it’s handy for the dcs homework.

But because we have a PC we don’t have decent laptops - just not necessary. We use our phones/tablets for casual browsing.

SoftSheen · 04/08/2018 22:26

Yes. I have a small MacBook Air that I use all the time. Not keen on iPads and though I do have a smartphone it mainly gets used for, well, phoning and texting people. I like a proper keyboard.

GrumpyOldMare · 04/08/2018 22:28

I use mainly use my desktop pc. My tablet gets used mainly for watching videos/tv catchup. Hate using my phone for anything but phone calls/texts. Used to have a laptop, but hated it so got rid,no interest in buying another,I'd rather just buy a new desktop at some point in the future.

April241 · 04/08/2018 22:29

I have an iPad which I bought a keyboard for and it’s like a tiny laptop, love it! The only problem I’ve had is printing certain things sometimes doesn’t work (like double sided planner pages that are always off centre, seems to just be a common annoying issue)
