To ask if anyone still uses a laptop/desktop PC

So DP just booted up my laptop for the first time in months to rearrange something that couldn't be changed by smartphone. I got all excited and told him to leave the PC on as I'd like to do some things - an hour later and I still have no real idea of what it is I want to do that I can't do on a smartphone or tablet.

Now there are things that CAN only be done with a computer (for example I can only pay my CC bill on a PC (which I do at work)). And IF I wanted to play WoW or Sims, that's a PC thing - but I honestly don't think I even have the patience for those except on the odd novel occasion. I game on the Xbox (which is very quick, better quality than my laptop and holds lots of data), I browse and watch videos on my phone, I listen to music on Amazon Music or Alexa so I'm not even sure what the point of my PC even is...

So AIBU to ask if anyone still uses their PC for everyday usage (not including work needs of course)>

Yes. I use my laptop daily for home admin and looking up important stuff.
Can't stand typing on a smart phone and I have a good firewall on my laptop.

Stuckinthis · 04/08/2018 19:56

Just reading a few more response (and finding typing difficult in a way I wouldn't with my smartphone as DS in feeding at the moment).

Are we still hanging on unnecessarily as a generation to the PC? Will it be redundant by time our DCs are our age?

I haven't turned my laptop on in about 2 years.

BertieBotts · 04/08/2018 19:58

Vanilla you can play Sims 2 on modern computers. You just have to contact EA support and explain it won't run off the disc. They will give you the digital version for free. I've never really got into Sims 3 or 4.

My desktop is always plugged in and takes about 30 seconds to boot up as I have an SSD - it's actually on most of the day and I'll pootle about to and from it while doing other things. I only switch it off if I know I'm going out or going to be doing something else for 2+ hours or so otherwise it's just there.

BertieBotts · 04/08/2018 19:59

Could be a generational thing I reckon. Though DS uses a PC daily as well. He's 9. He has a tablet as well but he likes the bigger screen and the games you can get on a computer.

daisypond · 04/08/2018 19:59

I have a desktop PC. I don't have a laptop, or a smartphone or a tablet.
I've got poor eyesight, so I like the big screen. And I also like a proper keyboard.

Vanillaradio · 04/08/2018 20:01

Will they really give me the digital version for free?Smile Good to know thank you Bertie will investigate when new laptop purchased.

SilverySurfer · 04/08/2018 20:01

I use a laptop - do not own a smartphone or tablet and see no reason to change.

bridgetreilly · 04/08/2018 20:02

My laptop recently had to go away for THREE WEEKS to be repaired. It was awful. Truly awful.

It doesn't have to be plugged in (I mean, it does for charging, like a phone does, but the battery lasts several hours) and it takes no longer to start than my phone, by the time you include putting in the PIN and things. Plus the screen is way bigger and better, typing is infinitely quicker and easier. Like, why wouldn't you use it? Phone is fine when I'm on the go, but laptop is a much better tool.

5000KallaxHoles · 04/08/2018 20:04

Yep. Trying to do anything other than idle flicking through a website or netflix on a tablet or phone does my frigging head in - so I'm on my desktop PC a lot most days. Tablet is one of those hybrid ones which has a keyboard that appears if you want it to but it's still nowhere near as quick or comfortable than touch typing on a proper PC keyboard.

I don't tend to use my laptop much anymore - it's gone to the kids for them to use - and if I'm out and about and need to type something I'll use the keyboard on my tablet, but I much prefer using my PC for anything more intensive than a quick email (I like my dual monitor setup on it too).

BigDamnHero · 04/08/2018 20:05

I use my laptop daily. I don't have a tablet and I just find my phone screen too small and typing on it unwieldy.

I'm writing a novel and couldn't imagine not having a full-sized keyboard.

Mostly, though, I just really dislike change (autistic) so cling to my laptop!

BigDamnHero · 04/08/2018 20:06

^^ Not unwieldy - that was the wrong word. Just 'awkward', I guess.

ChinkChink · 04/08/2018 20:07

Laptop here. PCs at work. I use my smartphone and/or tablet only when out and about and dislike on screen keyboards. I touch type so I'm much faster with a 'real' keyboard.

Some thought needs to be given about how young children use tech. The apprentice at work was presented with a laptop to do a learning programme the other day and had no idea how to use it - stabbing the screen, unable to find menus or settings.

Or am I just ancient? Grin

swapsicles · 04/08/2018 20:08

Yep, got my phone and a desktop.
Anything other than a quick reply I use the desktop, much easier to type and also multitasking, especially if you're buying and comparing stuff online, so multiple online store tabs open, cashback tabs and review sites too, that's not easy on a phone!

19lottie82 · 04/08/2018 20:08

I do but it’s just for business really.

Atthebottomofthesea · 04/08/2018 20:11

I have a laptop. A lot of mobile sites are really difficult to navigate, it is much harder to fine tune searches.

Much easier to type on a laptop, downloading is easier on a laptop, spreadsheets, docs much easier. Easier to manage my emails.

Play games on my tablet.

sunshinewithabitofdrizzle · 04/08/2018 20:20

I use my laptop everyday. I prefer to use it because I can't type properly on a phone or tablet, I make far too many mistakes. I can touch type on a keyboard. And I like using the mouse. I just find it easier overall. I use the tablet in bed to play games on like solitaire or mahjong and I do browse twitter or facebook on it, but for anything else I use my laptop (including being here on mn).

sunshinewithabitofdrizzle · 04/08/2018 20:21

oh and I never do any kind of online shopping on my phone or tablet, I always use my laptop for it.

malfoyy · 04/08/2018 20:21

I use my laptop as I write and that's no so easy on a tablet for me.

Everything else I do on tablet though!

KickAssAngel · 04/08/2018 20:26

I use my laptop LOADS. In fact, after I got it, I almost stopped using my tablet.

Phone for on the go/urgent things - laptop for everything else.

But then I use it all the time for work, writing documents, running my classroom, emails, having multiple tabs open (one per kid in classtime), researching things, paying bills etc.

I get fed up with having apps on my phone and then finding there are still functions that don't work, or are a faff, when using the phone. I'm at home or work most of the time, so the laptop is easier.

Sometimes, I leave the house and go shopping WITHOUT MY PHONE!!

LakieLady · 04/08/2018 20:27

I touch type, so can do stuff much faster on a keyboard than a touch screen.

And I don't want a phone with a huge screen that won't fit comfortably in my pocket, so only use my smartphone for stuff that can't wait till I get home.

I've started using my laptop for work stuff, as I find the screen on the Chromebooks they've issued us to be irritatingly small when updating client records and stuff.

JacquesHammer · 04/08/2018 20:35

So I suppose my next question is what people use their laptops for that you can't do on a smartphone or tablet

Ok so desktop is just that (it’s actually a massive laptop) stays on my desk. I work from home and I’m careful about posture - it’s far better to sit properly at my desk than lean over a phone.

Laptop I take to meetings with clients as part of my job is website creation and editors are far superior on laptop to device

sporadicrains · 04/08/2018 20:36

I can't imagine how you could use anything other than a laptop/pc for things like big spreadsheets, writing long reports, filing your tax return etc.

I'm a short sighted dinosaur, me.

ListsWonderfulLists · 04/08/2018 20:41

Love my desktop PC and will hang on to it forever! Don't have a laptop or tablet and only use my phone for idly browsing facebook and the news. I like a big screen, a proper keyboard and a proper mouse. All the touch-screen typing and scrolling drives me mad. It's also far better for my back to sit properly at a desk. Actually I found laptops are the worst for that as you hunch over and the screen is too low and you get a crick in your neck. Proper PCs all the way!

ForalltheSaints · 04/08/2018 20:42

Desktop, especially for catch-up tv.
