To ask if anyone still uses a laptop/desktop PC

So DP just booted up my laptop for the first time in months to rearrange something that couldn't be changed by smartphone. I got all excited and told him to leave the PC on as I'd like to do some things - an hour later and I still have no real idea of what it is I want to do that I can't do on a smartphone or tablet.

Now there are things that CAN only be done with a computer (for example I can only pay my CC bill on a PC (which I do at work)). And IF I wanted to play WoW or Sims, that's a PC thing - but I honestly don't think I even have the patience for those except on the odd novel occasion. I game on the Xbox (which is very quick, better quality than my laptop and holds lots of data), I browse and watch videos on my phone, I listen to music on Amazon Music or Alexa so I'm not even sure what the point of my PC even is...

So AIBU to ask if anyone still uses their PC for everyday usage (not including work needs of course)>

laptop most days. work from home and certainly would not trust tablet for anything secure.

tablet is a toy. c ant even cut and paste and as you see many web sites including this one arent coded properly for it.

sanityisamyth · 04/08/2018 22:33

Laptop and PC I have to use for work, although laptop is a 3 in 1, so it's like a massive tablet when it's flipped back on itself.

Lots of things I find easier on my laptop but for convenience, either of my iPads or my iPhone will do most jobs I think of!

RoseMartha · 04/08/2018 22:33

Yes still use a desktop. Although when it dies will probably replace with a laptop.

misskatamari · 04/08/2018 22:37

I use mine daily. I'm a sahm, before that was a teacher so used it for planning, but now I use it lots of getting together paper activities for the kids which I print out, go on Pinterest a lot, sometimes watch I Player/Netflix if the kids are hogging the telly. I use my iPhone for Facebook/mumsnet/random googling but if I'm wanting to research something properly online I much prefer using my pc. I save recipes etc a lot to print as well

Witchend · 04/08/2018 22:41

2 desktops, 2 laptops here. Lots of things are much easier than typing on a phone or tablet.

AlpacaLypse · 04/08/2018 22:46

I like being on the family desktop. Comfy chair, good lighting, decent screen size. Here I am, enjoying it immensely. Phone is too small, tablet keeps mysteriously disappearing at the same time as dd1, and laptop seems to have gone back to university at same time as dd2.

MrsDeanWinchester75 · 04/08/2018 22:47

I'm a photographer so use it for Photoshop and storing/ uploading photos.

I prefer to email from it too, I hate the predictive text on phones and prefer typing on a proper keyboard.

RoboJesus · 04/08/2018 22:57

The processing power, safety, and stability of your phone is just awful. If you've ever used it for sensitive data just burn it now before it's too late. Also the size of the thing and quality is just horrendous. The scope of things you can do on your phone is so comparatively narrow. I mean if you sit happily in that scope then sure that's fine but the majority of the developed world just won't ever

sillyswimmer · 04/08/2018 23:17

I have a smart phone, tablet and laptop. My laptop is used every day. It's much easy to have a lot of tabs open (I probably use right-click more than anything else on my keyboard) than flicking between apps on a phone or tablet. I also notice when I spend extended periods on either my phone or tablet I get eye strain and neck ache.

I've been sorting out lots of paperwork this year, filling in Government claim forms, etc, and there's no way I could have done it and kept my sanity using a phone or tablet.

I treated myself to a new laptop earlier this year with a SSD, which means it boots up faster than my phone or tablet, and has a long battery life.

liquidrevolution · 04/08/2018 23:29

I write 10k word reports on my laptop. Would be an absolute pain in the arse to have to use a tablet. I also don't like doing banking etc on my phone.

Actually I have 2 laptops. And two monitors as well. And I love a clicky sounding keyboard.

AmericanEskimoDoge · 04/08/2018 23:49

I absolutely loathe typing on anything but a real keyboard.

I love my tablet for games, reading magazines, visiting websites where I'm just reading/looking at photos, etc., but if I need to type more than the briefest of search terms, I want a desktop computer. I also enjoy the comfort of the mouse, the roominess of the large monitor and the superior sound quality of the speakers.

Same thing goes for reading. Technically, I could just read on the tablet or phone, but the experience is so much better on the Kindle!

Onwhitehorses · 04/08/2018 23:52

Love a desktop. Tablets and especially laptops are so bad for your neck. I think we will see a huge increase in musculo-skeletal problems in the coming years.

Nanny0gg · 04/08/2018 23:56

I hate typing on my phone, not keen on doing it on Ipad and I loathe the keypad and keyboard on a laptop.

Love my PC.

mintui · 05/08/2018 00:00

How can you be a working professional without using a desktop or laptop? I have a desktop at work plus a personal laptop and work laptop.

DerelictWreck · 05/08/2018 00:04

Personally for me it just seems a bit of an effort plugging it in and booting it up for little gain

I use my mac every evening while I'm watching tv, cooking etc and requires little/non of either.

Battery lasts 8 hours at a time and it hasn't been turned off in over 2 years! Just close the lid each time. Just as fast as they day I got it as well Grin

PickAChew · 05/08/2018 00:04

I'm middle aged. I can see things on my laptop that I can't make out at all, on my phone.

PickAChew · 05/08/2018 00:06

And yes, typing. You clatter your fingers for a second in a proper keyboard abs there is a perfectly firmed paragraph. With no gucking autocorrect intervention.

NoSuchThingAsAlpha · 05/08/2018 00:42

Tablets are a jack of all trades, master of none type thing imho. If you're a casual user of modern tech, I see the point. But if you want to take advantage of the full depth of what modern technology offers (be it watch HD movies / Netflix, play games, write, listen to music etc), you'll buy a device intended for that specific job.

ferrier · 05/08/2018 00:47

Why would you watch videos on a phone when you can watch them on a desktop or laptop?
Why would you attempt to create documents or edit images?
Why would you view photographs?
All the above are significantly better and/or easier on a desktop and somewhat better/easier on a laptop.

SenecaFalls · 05/08/2018 01:35

Smartphones and tablets are useful for consuming content, but I think you need a desktop or laptop computer to produce content efficiently.

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 05/08/2018 01:37

I use my laptop at home and my smartphone when I'm out. A phone's screen is just too small to look at things comfortably and I hate typing on the screen - give me a keyboard any day. I rarely turn off my laptop. I put it into sleep mode and it turns straight back on. Easy.

nibblingandbiting · 05/08/2018 01:46

I use my Mac for photo and video editing. Most of my blog stuff. Cam work and some other online adult work. Excel, although I use my phone to quickly add stuff but more detailed on Mac. Presentations. Sort out pics in general. Plus I can lock folders. Uni work. Short stories. Prefer the bigger screen to watch stuff. Create animation. Some software I use to edit can only be used on Mac/windows.

Fabricwitch · 05/08/2018 01:51

I use a laptop and PC regularly. I use them for art and design. I also prefer to type anything longer than a couple of lines on a PC or laptop. And there are plenty of games that are best played on PC.

Btw, you should be able to pay your CC bill on a mobile device by changing the site version to desktop.

Stupomax · 05/08/2018 02:28

I'm surprised so many people still use a laptop for normal day-to-day usage. Personally for me it just seems a bit of an effort plugging it in and booting it up for little gain.

If you use it regularly like your tablet then it's charged up every night and it's already booted up, so all you need to do is lift the lid.

Took me about 3 seconds to do that with mine just now.

Zero effort.

MissLadyM · 05/08/2018 02:47

I'd love a laptop! It breaks my heart thinking of those unused laptops
