To ask if anyone still uses a laptop/desktop PC

So DP just booted up my laptop for the first time in months to rearrange something that couldn't be changed by smartphone. I got all excited and told him to leave the PC on as I'd like to do some things - an hour later and I still have no real idea of what it is I want to do that I can't do on a smartphone or tablet.

Now there are things that CAN only be done with a computer (for example I can only pay my CC bill on a PC (which I do at work)). And IF I wanted to play WoW or Sims, that's a PC thing - but I honestly don't think I even have the patience for those except on the odd novel occasion. I game on the Xbox (which is very quick, better quality than my laptop and holds lots of data), I browse and watch videos on my phone, I listen to music on Amazon Music or Alexa so I'm not even sure what the point of my PC even is...

So AIBU to ask if anyone still uses their PC for everyday usage (not including work needs of course)>

I use my iPad Pro (12.9) daily but we have an iMac and MacBook Pro to use for work etc. we obviously have iPhones too.

lljkk · 04/08/2018 20:44

2 big screens for desktop PC at work. Plenty of the software I run does not exist for any tablet.

Much better graphics for desktop at home, & how teen2 does his h/work.
DD does h/work on laptop.
I do everything on laptop. My eyes aren't so good even with glasses, the idea of trying to do lots on tiny phone screen freaks me out!
My phone is crap & can't store more than 3 apps.

I touch type... what's it like to touch type on a tablet?

Question maybe for separate thread: is iTunes only available free to Apple product users? Just for listening to podcasts on iTunes or youtube clips, what is the easiest way with good sound quality & no headphones? I use my laptop for this, but doesn't seem ideal.

ElinorOliphantIsCompletelyFine · 04/08/2018 20:47

I have a desktop PC, MacBook, iPad and an android phone.

I can't remember the last time I used the iPad. It's really old so I'll probably get rid of it soon anyway.

I only boot up the PC when I want to play cities skylines lol.

I use the MacBook nearly every day. It's usually playing a TV show while I'm in the kitchen. I also use it for some free courses I've signed up for, planning my budget and general computer usage.

My phone is used for most things as most of my bills, including credit cards, have apps that I can use to check my balances and make payments (although they're all on direct debit anyway).

Etymology23 · 04/08/2018 20:48

Spreadsheet manipulation, document editing or proofing, photo editing beyond the odd filter, though tbf that would probably be ok on a phone if I had the software. Proper research eg comparing mortgages or holidays where I maybe need 20 tabs and want two alongside one another. I would use a laptop for all these, and sometimes plug it into a second screen.

Top of the list is spreadsheets though. I use them for calculating my net pay, budgeting, comparing complex things like a holiday or new car, managing lists like new jobs I could apply for, just bits of maths more complex than an easy phone sum, if I want to keep it longer than using my scientific calculator, and for modelling eg pension outcomes with different interest and investment return rates and drawdown rates. I just can’t do that on a phone!!

I love using my laptop. I much prefer a key board. I like to use it for work I have to do as a councillor and other stuff for our small business. I have also not connected my smart phone up to my banking as I feel it's safer to keep it all on one laptop.
I like to see the whole screen when I am working on anything and much prefer it for shopping sites etc.

DramaAlpaca · 04/08/2018 20:50

I use my laptop for most things & our family PC if I need to work at home. I'm a fast touch typist & find it much easier to type on the laptop than my phone, and also I prefer a bigger screen. I don't have a tablet because I manage fine with my smartphone and my laptop.

Flowerylampshade · 04/08/2018 20:51

I don't have a tablet and have never had one. I hate typing on them. I use my phone or my laptop. I love my laptop.

dementedma · 04/08/2018 20:53

i have Android and iphone smartphones but much prefer tablet (with detachable keyboard) . Smartphones are way too small and fiddly.
At work I use a PC with dual screens.
Really only use my phone for phoning, texting and whatsapp, and for a couple of apps like Booking.com , trainline and banking.
Wouldnt even consider using it for videos, TV etc.

FuckPants · 04/08/2018 20:53

Gaming PC and a gaming laptop here, tablets can't run the games that the FuckPants household likes to play or if they can (cut down versions) they are a PITA control wise.

AnExcellentUsername · 04/08/2018 20:55

I have a pretty powerful PC for work. I can see the appeal of tablets if you're just browsing the internet but I find them useless for doing much else on.

elliejjtiny · 04/08/2018 20:56

I use my pc a lot although not every day. I prefer to use a keyboard and mouse rather than a touch screen. I've got a basic tablet that I use every day. I like the portable aspect of it and the fact that it's mine, unlike the family pc. I very rarely use my phone, mainly use it so school can call me when i'm out or I can call dh if I'm late.

Collywobbles1984 · 04/08/2018 20:56

Those of you who play Sims, what laptops do you have? I've got Sims 4 and it's really laggy on my laptop and want to upgrade but don't know where to start!

AviatorShades · 04/08/2018 20:57

laptop which i use to watch TV and i-pad. Don't have a telly and since I had to give up work I also gave up my smart phone so I've now got a PAYG cheapo phone. And, bonus, it's pink Grin

adaline · 04/08/2018 20:59

So I suppose my next question is what people use their laptops for that you can't do on a smartphone or tablet

Nothing, I just much prefer typing on a keyboard. It's quicker and more comfortable and looking at a decent sized screen is better for your eyes. My laptop is also quicker, has better sound quality and is far better for looking at multiple tabs/programmes on.

I only use my phone when out and about or in bed.

BertieBotts · 04/08/2018 21:00

I don't use a laptop, I don't like them. I play Sims on a gaming desktop which is probably about 3-4 years out of date. I'm afraid I can't really give much more info than that, I just know that we kind of do a waterfall - DH upgrades his and then I get his old parts and then we put anything salvageable from mine into a third computer which we use as more of a media centre to watch TV, play music, etc.

I expect if you ask on a popular Sims forum you'd get tech advice about what to look out for when upgrading? I use ModTheSims but that's very active for Sims 2 and I'm not sure whether it's the best place for TS4.

OnceTwiceThrice · 04/08/2018 21:01

I have recently replaced my laptop with a windows surface pro - have a smart phone and tablet, but tend to only use phone and computer (surface)... can't wait to get our iMac back soon though (recently moved) as I do like having a 'permanent' computer as well. We've found a mixture of apple and windows products to preferable...

FinallyHere · 04/08/2018 21:03

What can i do on a laptop that i cant do on my tablet (iPad)

Not much, but some things. For example, i have bank accounts with RBS and NatWest. Both have an app which i mostly use on my phone, RBS's app lets me add new account details to pay new people. NatWest this has to be done through the web interface, so easier on the laptop.

Serious spreadsheets and powerpoint/visio diagrams i would use the laptop, 5he tablet is great for quick updates. I keep lots of 9,d emails for audit purpose#, Laptop wi s hands down for search through old emails.

Pretty much everything else, its tablet all the way.

Echobelly · 04/08/2018 21:03

Yes, laptop. I like typing on a keyboard. Like some other posters here, I don't massively see the point of a tablet if you have a smartphone. My husband has a (fairly old now) tablet and it occasionally comes out for holidays and that's it

friendlyflicka · 04/08/2018 21:04

I touch type very fast. I don't really like touch screens. I think it was just one technology jump too far for me. I love typing! I have a Macbook Pro and love it. Don't really like my iPhone very much

MaMaMaBelle · 04/08/2018 21:07

Desktop PC for me & dh uses laptop, for everything.
Don't go online at all on my phone. Hate trying to see stuff on a tiny screen & don't get on very well with touchscreens!

Metoodear · 04/08/2018 21:07

Yup much safer and the recommend way for children to use the internet in the busiest room in the house on a pc that everyone uses

RaindropsOnKittens43 · 04/08/2018 21:09

Until recently I'd have said I needy laptop to write formal letters (which in itself is rarer nowadays, usually a clear email suffices). But when on holiday I needed to write a letter, and discovered I could actually do even that on my phone (though it was a bit more fiddly).
Also use it for spreadsheet tasks, e.g. working out tax return, and I think that would be fiddly on a phone, and probably on a tablet too.

hannnnnnnxo · 04/08/2018 21:09

Desktop at work lol

Laptop (macbook) all the time for work emails, general word processing like sprucing up my cv and applying for new job positions. Some light video editing and photo processing. Looking back at old photos. But having said that, I do mainly use it for Netflix or light web browsing (when the mobile version of said website is awful.)

daisyinatree · 04/08/2018 21:18

I still use a laptop. Have done for 10 years. Don't most people? Confused

Lindalee3 · 04/08/2018 21:18

@stuckinthis

Yeah of course. I have 2 laptops, (one personal one and my work one,) and a kindle. DH has a desktop computer, and a laptop.

I can't believe anyone thinks using a laptop is a 'faff?' How is it? Confused

As for 'having to wait for it to boot up...' I only do that once in the morning, and that takes 90 seconds. During the day I just close the lid, and when I open it again, I just go straight back in as it's still up and running.

Looking at this thread, it seems most people still do have a laptop.

Not surprising really. Using a tablet is OK for casual use/browsing the web on the train/in the garden, but not for long-term use. Doing stuff on a laptop is waaaaay easier/better. As a number of posters have said, there is so much you can't do on a tablet (or even if you can, it would be a massive ballache!)

Remember that stupid advert for ipad pro from last year, when the obnoxious little kid said 'what's a computerrr?' Ridiculous. An ipad is still a computer FFS! Dumbest ad of the decade!!!

This short youtube vid makes a mockery of that shit advert. Grin
