To think people genuinely hate England?

Is anyone else sick of seeing the anger/hatred towards England in the World Cup? This 'anyone but england' mentality from almost every other country is disheartening honestly. I've seen every excuse under the sun, we haven't played a proper team yet, 200,000 signatures to re-play the Colombia match because apparently that wasn't fair, blaming a few rowdy fans for not wanting England to win. I'm especially surprised by the amount of Scottish/Irish/Welsh people who seem to feel like this (on social media) i know we'd so be routing for our neighbours if it was the other way round! So... AIBU to think everyone just friggin hates England?!

I haven't seen this?

AnyName1 · 08/07/2018 22:50

Why do you think that is?

rhebarb · 08/07/2018 22:50

Well we did try to colonise the planet.

Rufustheyawningreindeer · 08/07/2018 22:51

Same here themonkeymummy

Havent been paying an awful lot of attention to the rest of the world so i may have missed it

RachelTeeth · 08/07/2018 22:51

Um..do you know much about England’s colonial history and it’s hisotry and ongoing attitudes to other countries including Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales? That’ll explain it. Dunno about the football stuff though.

beautifulblue · 08/07/2018 22:51

anyname you tell me?

I've only seen support
The only negativity I've seen towards England is from the cheating bastard Maradona

MarthaArthur · 08/07/2018 22:53

Yes and its disturbing. I live england. Have lived here since childhood and consider myself english. But lots of people I have spoken to lately about the world cup always bitch "anyone but england" i hate england. I used to have an aussie flatmate. Since he returned to Aus all he does is bitch about the English on facebook and how awful england is. (But it was fine when he lived here and he got what he wanted?)
I know a few people who keep posting online very anti english sentiment and its depressinf and horrible.

postcardsfrom · 08/07/2018 22:53

People don’t usually cheer for their past colonial overlords. Particularly not ones who sulk when they lose and boast when they win. Wouldn’t call it ‘hatred’ though, you seem a bit sensitive, it is just football.

YesILikeItToo · 08/07/2018 22:53

Ever seen Eurovision?

beautifulblue · 08/07/2018 22:54

What has englands colonial history got to do with a football tournament?! Do we not want Germany to win because of Hitler 🙄 & what do you mean englands on going attitude towards other countries now? That's a sweeping statement.

SoftlyCatchyMonkey1 · 08/07/2018 22:55

@marthaArthur
I find the Aussies have a real chip on their shoulder about us

howfaralong · 08/07/2018 22:55

Yeah honestly it's unbearable. I'm genuinely praying you don't win.

  • ikea branch wrecked for no reason
  • fans jumping all over several cars including an ambulance and destroying them
  • constant media fawning

It's all so pathetic.

Why should we all want you to win?

sailorcherries · 08/07/2018 22:56

I can assure you that any time Scotland in particular competes in any sporting event (football, rugby, swimming, tennis - Andy Murray and the great British/Scottish issue depending on the result - so on and so forth) there is a hatred towards their doing well from a lot of English people. Not all but a good number. This feeling is probably mutual.

For me it's more to do with the fans. Yes, those fans: the one's who wrecked an Ikea, jumped on public property and on general acted like fucking knobs. They aren't representative but I don't want to support something that makes people think that attitude is okay. The bloody Japanese team cleaned their own locker room and left a thank you note after being sent home, they deserve respect.

beautifulblue · 08/07/2018 22:57

You talk like we personally came over, took your country then came back to watch the football & expect you to cheer for us 😂

Exactly. Using colonialism as an excuse for xenophobia. It was over a hundred years ago. No one alive was responsible or involved in colonialism so best put that excuse to bed. No one is still slating Germany because of Hitler and Naziism. No one slates Japan for their war atrocities. Or romania for ceucescu and the orphanages. Or Russia for Putin and the gulags and Stalinism. But for some reason its ew england collonialism.

sailorcherries · 08/07/2018 22:58

*in general

Unihorn · 08/07/2018 22:58

British media is awfully biased towards coverage of England. I am Welsh with and English husband and also a huge football fan. Even I do not want to watch 2-3 hours of coverage a day in the run up to every England game. BBC Breakfast and Good Morning Britain both go mad for it and the papers are also full of it. It is simply not true that the other home nations would have this much coverage as much as people claim it. Wales did outstandingly well in the Euros and, whilst we had great support from others for the most part, there certaibly wasn't rolling news coverage of every fucking game.

DCITennison · 08/07/2018 22:58

Hmm, there is something just a bit off-putting about the demeanour of England fans when assembled in large numbers.

There’s joy and camaraderie but also a degree of seething anger that is never far from the surface, even when celebrating. It’s weird and unsettling and not something I would associate with other countries.

If england fans are held in poor regard then I think the blame lies solely with England fans.

postcardsfrom · 08/07/2018 22:58

It’s a mystery only to English people! You’re like that kid at school that no one likes and their mum goes ‘ oh they’re all jealous’

Menarefrommarsitwouldseem · 08/07/2018 22:58

Yes I've mentioned this a lot lately on other threads

I lived in Australia for 3 years and the low lying, general hatred towards England is quite something.

I'm currently back in England, and work with a very diverse team. In particular the Irish and polish at work seem to detest us tbh. Not all but a large number and it's really shit to have to listen to all the time.

I shouldn't make sweeping statements. My paternal grandparents were Irish and lived here all their lives, loving both Ireland and England equally.

mmmgoats · 08/07/2018 22:59

@howfaralong I agree that side of it isn't that great but are you genuinely trying to say no other country has any bad behaviour associated with football?! Because I think you're very much mistaken...

thegrinningfox · 08/07/2018 22:59

Yep. The “fans”.

howfaralong · 08/07/2018 22:59

You talk like we personally came over, took your country then came back to watch the football & expect you to cheer for us 😂

Glad the penny has dropped! 👍🏻 well done OP

I would imagine that's how a fair few Irish people do feel and they would have every right!

maxthemartian · 08/07/2018 22:59

Germany at least seemed to be sorry about Hitler. England on the other hand absolutely glorifies it's colonial past.
