To think people genuinely hate England?

Is anyone else sick of seeing the anger/hatred towards England in the World Cup? This 'anyone but england' mentality from almost every other country is disheartening honestly. I've seen every excuse under the sun, we haven't played a proper team yet, 200,000 signatures to re-play the Colombia match because apparently that wasn't fair, blaming a few rowdy fans for not wanting England to win. I'm especially surprised by the amount of Scottish/Irish/Welsh people who seem to feel like this (on social media) i know we'd so be routing for our neighbours if it was the other way round! So... AIBU to think everyone just friggin hates England?!

Slavery still causes raw hurt in many black Americans. It’s actually not good enough to say that there are no slave owners alive today so get over it.
The legacy still lives on in how black people live and are treated. There is a reason children learn about history. It’s not irrelevant because it’s over. It explains the world we live in now. Ireland was piss poor before we joined the EU because of our past as a warring colony. And everyone over 40 lived that.

headstone · 09/07/2018 22:20

It’s really sad some people hate a whole country , especially mainly for historical stuff that has nothing to do with the ordinary folk.

Lweji · 09/07/2018 22:27

I think the one thing we can all agree on here is that England deserve to win the World Cup this year.

Actually, I think Belgium are looking better and more deserving, as a team. From a neutral point of view.

Itsfridayiminlovee · 09/07/2018 22:33

Anyone quoted trainspotting yet?

Grin
letstalk2000 · 09/07/2018 22:40

Belgium are probably the best team left in the World Cup ! It would be a great result for the Premiership if England played Belgium in the final. This would reinforce that the Premiership is the best league in the World.

I don't know what I will do if England win the World Cup except be ecstatic.

With regards to the thread, I cant think of a bunch of players who are more the opposite to the views displayed on here by many.

The very reason the team has been so successful (with some limited talent) is because they don't buy in to the ( we deserve to win just because were England).

CuriousaboutSamphire · 09/07/2018 22:49

I'm thinking about Trainspotting...

It’s not irrelevant because it’s over Nobody is saying it is, are they. I'm mot. I'm saying living in the past, letting it shape who you are, is unhealthy.

I have Elsa in my head.. letting it all go, but Walsh is persistent...

"“People think it's all about misery and desperation and death and all that shite, which is not to be ignored, but what they forget is the pleasure of it. Otherwise we wouldn't do it. After all, we're not fucking stupid. At least, we're not that fucking stupid.” Maybe he was too optimistic!

mommylovesyou · 09/07/2018 22:49

Yes they are very understated our players this tournament. I know they are overpaid, but they aren't all parading about in their undies and whatnot, getting sent off and being loutish off pitch.
That Harry McGuire fella - just seen an interview with him, what a lovely, normal lad he is.
Really wishing England well and many of my lovely Scottish friends agree xx

Housecoatdiva · 09/07/2018 22:53

I started reading the thread then skipped to the end because the sweeping statements about how hated England is just nonsense in my experience. I've lived in several different countries including Australia that was mentioned earlier and travelled extensively for the past 15 years and can honestly say I haven't come across this supposed hatred towards England.
Alot of countries have historical embarrassments. Claiming that's a reason to hate a country in the present day seems a bit dim to me.

thenettyprofessor · 09/07/2018 23:08

Come on! this is a community the mumsnet community I am actually sad that we can't just get on!
I will be supporting England and am not ashamed of that, every country and culture has history.
I do not agree with the idiots that trashed Ikea and the ambulance, but do not tarnish us all with those actions.
Can we all just have civil cyber handshake and enjoy it please

everythingsgoingtobealright · 09/07/2018 23:10

Great post @InionEile 👏🏻

Tomatoesrock · 09/07/2018 23:18

I do not hate anyone from England either. I have friends and family that settled in England. I work in customer care and most of our customers are from England, Yes some are rude, most are a pleasure and it is all about the football in my job.

Every place has idiots, Yes the football hooligans are awful, there is many other club teams in the world with violent fans. I would not blame or think badly of the average English person, over history or hooligans.

England / Britain is Irelands biggest trades partner, for now. I think lots of good relationship have been built over the years between Ireland and England.

headstone · 09/07/2018 23:26

Also if you look at historical atrocities like the potato famine, would that happen today? You cannot undue mistakes of the past just learn from them. If Ireland needed help the UK would be the first country to offer aid. There are plenty of neighbouring countries around the world which this simply isn’t the case.

InionEile · 09/07/2018 23:27

Did you actually read my post, @TomPinch? Can you grasp the concept of cultural imperialism? When you go around the world and people are nice to you because you’re English and know where Liverpool / Manchester etc is and know BBC TV shows and follow English football teams, you’re enjoying a form of cultural privilege.

I know people are resistant to facts and reality and admitting their privilege. White people are also resistant to hearing that they’re privileged, mostly because they don’t understand the concept and think it means that they are privileged when in fact it just means that they are ‘the norm’ and everyone fits in around them.

It’s hard to stand up and admit when you have privilege but it’s important to do it. I never wanted to admit I experienced white privilege, especially as an Irish person, but I do and getting angry and denying it is childish. Ditto for English people who refuse to recognize their privilege. There’s no point stomping your foot and sulking that it’s it fair and why can’t you just be proud like everyone else. That’s the same as white people sulking about why there is no ‘White History Month’ or men whining that there’s no International Men’s Day.

AWomanIsAnAdultHumanFemale · 09/07/2018 23:27

I can certainly understand why many countries have an issue with our colonial past.

Perfect response! You’re getting the hang of it.

But how far back should the current generation of Brits have to think about?

You don’t have to think about anything other than that the person you asked a question has responded with their reason. You say “oh that’s why? Good to know”

Then why can't you listen to the responses you are getting

Oh I am listening. Plenty are listening.

you really do seem to hold the sons responsible for the sins of the fathers, unto the what 200th generation?

It’s seems you weren’t listening though.

ThistleAmore · 09/07/2018 23:33

I'm Scottish.

Not particularly interested in football (a player and lover of the egg-shaped game), but I quite like Southgate and his wee well-drilled, well-managed squad of non-divas. They're a likable bunch, I wish them well.

I'm also a Yes-voting Remainer, who would quite like to live in peace and harmony with our bigger neighbour as equal friends, as opposed to being subsumed by panicked Tories.

Peace and love to all my English friends, relatives, colleagues and neighbours, and if you'd like to come over the border come Indy, let us know. We'll put the kettle on and get the good biscuits out. Wink

mommylovesyou · 09/07/2018 23:41

ThistleAmore what a nice comment, thank you.
I do love my Scottish neighbours. literally. My next door neighbour is an 82 year old proud Scot and is cheering on England in this tournament. It's just a 'feel good' time for many of us.
Peace and happiness x

Tomatoesrock · 09/07/2018 23:49

headstone I agree. Flowers

Especially these days with terror threats to all of us in Europe. The attacks in England have been horrendous, We have all felt deeply sad and compassion and a closer bond than ever for our Neighbours.

I am one proud Irish woman and will right a wrong when it pops up, but who can blame a nation on the past.

confuddledconfuddle · 09/07/2018 23:59

@imwideawake is the Japanese, Germans and Chinese still invading my country?

I don't agree with a lot of history - history is history though. Englands invasion on NI is not history. Brexit is not history. Internment of people is living memory and still happens to some degree. This is not history. This is still happening and the general joe bloggs of English man/woman hasn't a clue outside of England.

In saying that I don't hate English people as individuals. My grandmother is English. I have many English friends. However I do not support not being a United Ireland. I don't like England because of what it stands for/represents.

However I'm a realist and it's so much more complicated than what can ever be explained on mumsnet. I actually believe as England's biggest financial drain the UK doesn't really want NI anymore - they just can't do anything about that without starting another civil war. In addition as we are stuck with UK corporation taxes we have struggled to attract businesses as they get much better deals in the south and so we would then turn into a financial drain for them which they can't currently afford But we might actually get to another civil war anyway with Brexit.

However when it comes to the football team - that isn't the reason why I wouldn't support them. (In fact this time I'm not abbe)It's because you couldn't bloody listen to them. But that is not unique to England - I don't support Tyrone in GAA as you can't bloody listen to them either. Tyrone supports don't get their knickers in a twist thou, they gloat all the more and take it as the banter it's meant to be. It's a football game!

yogaginrepeat · 10/07/2018 00:01

If Ireland needed help the UK would be the first country to offer aid.

Of course it would. Just like GB has always helped Ireland out in recent years. That referendum for example a couple of years ago, that will do so much* good* to the hard-earned peace and stability in Ireland. Such good neighbours.

Tomatoesrock · 10/07/2018 00:11

yogaginrepeat I do not think people were thinking of Ireland with the referendum. Why should they?

Before Brexit was decided, I know some in Ireland who could see sense in it, to tighten immigration. THOUGH Brexit is clearly a Disaster and a worry more for trade than peace in Ireland and NI.

All my in-laws are hardcore NI nationalists and neither side wants another war, but both sides are equally concerned about the financial impact Brexit will have, just like lots of businesses in the Republic.

chrisinthesun · 10/07/2018 00:18

I also know a few people who are from other parts of the UK, who are cheering England on (as many of the English would be if THEY were in the semi final.) Also many people from OUTSIDE the UK. Including many celebrities!!! Bet it's getting on the tits of the haters! grin

As has been said, anyone who is harbouring resentment for the English because of shit from centuries ago, needs to get a life, and fucking MOVE ON!

I suspect most of the HATERS are just jealous bastards who loathe us coz we are AWESOME,. They envy and respect us also.

I feel sad for them.

COME ON ENGLAND. Let's win this WORLD CUP in 2018!
