To think people genuinely hate England?

Is anyone else sick of seeing the anger/hatred towards England in the World Cup? This 'anyone but england' mentality from almost every other country is disheartening honestly. I've seen every excuse under the sun, we haven't played a proper team yet, 200,000 signatures to re-play the Colombia match because apparently that wasn't fair, blaming a few rowdy fans for not wanting England to win. I'm especially surprised by the amount of Scottish/Irish/Welsh people who seem to feel like this (on social media) i know we'd so be routing for our neighbours if it was the other way round! So... AIBU to think everyone just friggin hates England?!

In Ireland and we've been cheering for you in the pubs around here Football

ladybirdsarelovely33 · 08/07/2018 22:59

I think that other countries think that we think that we are better than them. Ultimately. For example, Brexit.

DCITennison · 08/07/2018 23:00

“What has englands colonial history got to do with a football tournament?! Do we not want Germany to win because of Hitler 🙄”

Have you not witnessed the behaviour of English fans and even English media towards Germans when we play them?

LostInShoebiz · 08/07/2018 23:00

The lack of awareness as to why England is so unpopular just adds fuel to the fire really.

The rest of the UK is well aware it is part of a union whereas a lot of English people have absolutely no awareness whatsoever and it can be fantastically irritating.

Think of it this way: do you live outside London? Do you sometimes think Londoners forget there’s a world beyond Watford or look down on the rest of the country? Well the whole of England does that about just about every other nation on earth.

howfaralong · 08/07/2018 23:01

@howfaralong I agree that side of it isn't that great but are you genuinely trying to say no other country has any bad behaviour associated with football?! Because I think you're very much mistaken...

I know. Those scenes of the Japanese and Russians tidying were brutal.

Of course there are hooligans in other countries but we are talking about England here and their fans are particularly obnoxious.

beautifulblue · 08/07/2018 23:01

howfaralong you don't have to want us to win, honestly we don't really care but making out we're any worse than any other country in the world because of a few people in the media is just laughable.

@sailorcherries I agree about the Japanese, really classy of them. But I can't see many other countries acting like that.. unfortunately.

I don’t like England at all and I was born here Sad if I was younger I’d move to Scotland where my ancestors came from.

Graphista · 08/07/2018 23:02

I'm a Scot who isn't into football so I don't really care about the footy side but as a Scot I do understand this:

"People don’t usually cheer for their past colonial overlords. Particularly not ones who sulk when they lose and boast when they win"

A lot of even the more polite England fans didn't hesitate to have a dig at Scotland for not qualifying - you can't behave like that and then expect us to support you.

In a general way - not only is there the colonial history - even in recent history England have treated & continue to treat Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland as the poor relation who's supposed to be grateful for any crumbs! Yet we're expected to tug our forelocks? I think not.

thegrinningfox · 08/07/2018 23:03

“There’s joy and camaraderie but also a degree of seething anger that is never far from the surface, even when celebrating. It’s weird and unsettling and not something I would associate with other countries.”

Says it so much better.

I love England and proud to be British but I will not support them in a football tournament. I feel no association with that side at all.

howfaralong · 08/07/2018 23:03

Yeah I pretty much think footballing wise you are worse than any other country and I really hope you don't win 🤷🏻‍♀️ sorry not sorry! 😀

Hamiltoes · 08/07/2018 23:03

Well we did try to colonise the planet.

Hahahahaa

OP sorry but you can't have only just noticed this?? I've never met an English person who I didn't like. But at the same time I can 100% understand while the rest of the world does not like England.

Japanese · 08/07/2018 23:03

No one slates Japan for their war atrocities.

Actually - on another MN thread about football today, a poster asked me why I wasn't ashamed of the Japanese flag because of exactly that.

Ginger1982 · 08/07/2018 23:03

Blame your media OP, they're the ones that fuel it, but you're also kidding yourself if you think England would support any of the other home nations.

Trottersindependenttraders · 08/07/2018 23:03

Yeah honestly it's unbearable. I'm genuinely praying you don't win.

Hmm genuinely? Really? Maybe just watch another channel or scroll past on your phone. I have absolutely no interest at all in the football so just don’t pay any attention to it. It’s pretty easy to do so I really don’t get the angst here Confused

NotUmbongoUnchained · 08/07/2018 23:03

martha People so slate those countries! I actually got berated on Saturday night by a man. “I fucking hate all you japs. What you did in the war was barbaric, you’re a dirty breed.”

Same goes for my Russian DH.

thegrinningfox · 08/07/2018 23:04

Not just a few people in the media. A few people in my park, in my pub, in my ikea, etc

howfaralong · 08/07/2018 23:04

Even this notion that football is 'coming home' makes me cringe! It's so arrogant.

Unihorn · 08/07/2018 23:04

Trevor Noah sums up the colonialism quite well!

keyboardkate · 08/07/2018 23:05

The hubristic arrogance of Brexit supporters is a manifestation of some English traits.

Football chants, violence, etc.echoes that. It is not a good look for anyone.

MimpiDreams · 08/07/2018 23:05

It's the fans that are the problem. Every time there's international football on there's England fans kicking off and ruining it for everyone. They're sore when they lose and ungracious when they win. I hate it and I'm English.

mmmgoats · 08/07/2018 23:06

@howfaralong I get that, I do, but you're giving it as a reason WHY people hate England, seems a pretty hypocritical reason if other countries behave badly too. Which they do, plenty of news reports over the years to back it up.

And yes of course there are those well behaved - the Japanese team is a great example - I don't think there's been any reports of our team being badly behaved either this World Cup?

I think a lot of countries have fair reason for disliking us, I just don't think that's a particularly fair reason IMO.

sailorcherries · 08/07/2018 23:06

beautiful it's not 'classy' it's showing respect for a nation that has hosted you and treated you well. It's not jumping on bloody bus shelters and ambulances, it's not ruining an Ikea, it's not the general demeanour of these fans.

It's not just football. Think about Brits abroad and the way a lot of people become feral. Bloody Thai full moon parties - Brits, and on this occasion the majority of which were English, bloody abuse the locals who try to help (and subsequently clean up their mess) and are so arrogantly entitled. Many Brits do not show respect for others and yet constantly demand it in return.

MarthaArthur · 08/07/2018 23:06

notumbongo sorry anyone said that to you. But i still find anti english sentiment disgusting. Even my own family do it and it makes me dispise them. They find it acceptable and dont understand why we dont talk to them now.

wakemeupbefore · 08/07/2018 23:07

What goes around etc. England is quite dismissive of other nations as a 'tradition' Hmm, the 'We are better and owned the world' tripe some still spew out [ looking at you, Boris]. The 'world' has got the message.
