To think people genuinely hate England?

Is anyone else sick of seeing the anger/hatred towards England in the World Cup? This 'anyone but england' mentality from almost every other country is disheartening honestly. I've seen every excuse under the sun, we haven't played a proper team yet, 200,000 signatures to re-play the Colombia match because apparently that wasn't fair, blaming a few rowdy fans for not wanting England to win. I'm especially surprised by the amount of Scottish/Irish/Welsh people who seem to feel like this (on social media) i know we'd so be routing for our neighbours if it was the other way round! So... AIBU to think everyone just friggin hates England?!

OP - you’re deluded if you think English people would get behind another home team or Ireland. And we wouldn’t care either way.

nNina22 · 08/07/2018 23:07

With all the negativity towards England and the English why is it that so many people are desperate to come and live here?

Trottersindependenttraders · 08/07/2018 23:07

Well the whole of England does that about just about every other nation on earth.

Umm, no we don’t. Not all of us anyway, some of us are really quite aware on the world around us and world news & events. Please don’t tar a whole nation with the same brush.

SoddingUnicorns · 08/07/2018 23:08

@Graphista has it bang on! Yes!

LostInShoebiz · 08/07/2018 23:08

...and nNina sums up, in a nutshell, why other nations think the way they do about England.

howfaralong · 08/07/2018 23:08

genuinely? Really? Maybe just watch another channel or scroll past on your phone. I have absolutely no interest at all in the football so just don’t pay any attention to it. It’s pretty easy to do so I really don’t get the angst here

Yep. It's impossible to ignore. UK advertising is so bloody English centred that I literally cannot ignore it, scroll past it, avoid it unless I remove myself from life. All my shitty spam advertising emails now have a pro English footballing slant. The news and newspapers are awash with it. I assume you manage to gloss over it because you actually are English and so the effect isn't quite so jarring.

Poloshot · 08/07/2018 23:09

Who cares? Small time mentality from them

NotUmbongoUnchained · 08/07/2018 23:09

If you had to spend a week as someone who wasn’t English or American, you’d understand why the rest of the world dislike them so much.

beautifulblue · 08/07/2018 23:09

howfaralong you're really getting excited at the prospect of having a dig at England aren't you? 😂 Glad you're enjoying yourself Hun..

Well I stared this thread to get some clarity & I feel like I have it. All be it for ridiculous, out dated, bull shit reasons but hey.. what ever. As for this England thinking they're better? That's bull shit. I remember the Scottish referendum & not one English person I knew wanted the Scots to leave us, because for some reason (even though you hate us) we feel united with you (ya know, United Kingdom?) maybe it's how the media portrays it, maybe ya nan & grandad told ya so... either way, just isn't true.

postcardsfrom · 08/07/2018 23:10

nNina22 are they? Or is it mostly them fleeing war zones? Not supporting a bloody football team because you’d be insufferable winners isn’t the same as hating a country and all it’s people!

Freddiepurrcury · 08/07/2018 23:10

DCITennison is spot on about the English fans’ and the English media’s attitude towards Germany. I worked behind various bars for a good few World Cups and a huge amount of England fans had a very negative attitude towards Germany.

howfaralong · 08/07/2018 23:11

With all the negativity towards England and the English why is it that so many people are desperate to come and live here?

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I spy with my little eye a brexit voting, daily mail reading, free Tommy spouting, Tory .

noseoftralee · 08/07/2018 23:11

In Ireland and we've been cheering for you in the pubs around here football

I know, it’s weird. This is the first tournament where people have been openly supporting England. Very unlike us 😂 Gareth Southgate seems very popular here! Also Harry Kane having Irish ancestry.

Stopitjuststopit2018 · 08/07/2018 23:11

Really can’t believe the “look how respectful Japan are” but then making references to England’s past - please, research Japan’s decorum about 80 years ago and its treatment of “prisoners of war”

RainbowsAndSmiles · 08/07/2018 23:13

What has englands colonial history got to do with a football tournament?! Do we not want Germany to win because of Hitler

Exactly, what's the difference? England's history is shit but so is Germany's.
Do you get Germany should never win because of the 2nd World War? Confused

beautifulblue · 08/07/2018 23:13

sailorcherries when was the last time you stayed being to clean up at a public event you attended then? 🙄 It's not expected, so yeah I'd call it classy.

Yep. It's impossible to ignore. UK advertising is so bloody English centred

TBF - most of the population of the UK is English so most advertising will be geared towards the English.

TittyGolightly · 08/07/2018 23:14

I'm especially surprised by the amount of Scottish/Irish/Welsh people who seem to feel like this (on social media)

So we celts should forgive the hundreds of years of oppression and cheer for you? Not bloody likely! (Parents are English but been here long enough to consider themselves Welsh. They wouldn’t cheer for England if their lives depended on it!)

sailorcherries · 08/07/2018 23:14

beautifulblue given that you think our reasons are bullshit because you don't agree it's easy to see why you feel the way you do.
As for the IndyRef, the amount of hate coming from some English people was tangible. Telling us to "fuck off", telling us to "go" because we weren't "wanted" and even the passive aggressive "don't come running to us". There's also the ones who didn't want Scotland to leave because of the negative implications it may have had on England (Wales and N.Ireland were watching) making their stance wholly selfish. And then there were those who hated the no result because we hadn't left.

Your ignorance truly does seem to be bliss.

Trottersindependenttraders · 08/07/2018 23:14

I am English yes. For some reason I feel like I shouldn’t admit that on this thread.

I see that it’s everywhere but I just zone out and don’t read the news stories on it. I live near Manchester and get what you say about London centric and England centric news. But that’s the London based media not just us normal people going about our every day lives but being tarred with the same brush. Some of us are actually okay, maybe even nice Grin

Cyclingpast · 08/07/2018 23:14

But how do you know that there is a lot of hatred/anger towards England in other countries?

LaContessaDiPlump · 08/07/2018 23:14

I've lived in England for 18 years but am half Welsh; there is a definite sense that the English feel they're from the main country and all the rest of us are graciously allowed to be here too. Funnily enough, the rest of us get a little testy about that. I do feel sorry for the occasional English person who just seems a little puzzled and hurt rather than offended by our collective attitude, though.

SoddingUnicorns · 08/07/2018 23:14

I spy with my little eye a brexit voting, daily mail reading, free Tommy spouting, Tory

Fucking hilarious Grin

AWomanIsAnAdultHumanFemale · 08/07/2018 23:14

I can’t speak for anyone else but my own impression of England, in relation to the football, gained from social media and news is that there is a thuggish arrogance to the supporters and pretty much zero respect for their own country and cities. Of course, this isn’t an accurate representation of English people or football fans, I’m not stupid, but it is what is being put out there by the English media. It’s what the world is seeing. Why would anyone want that sort of mentality to be encouraged by supporting it? Add to that the recent treatment of NI and Ireland over Brexit and I can totally see why England isn’t a favourite this side of the water. Can’t speak for other countries.

Silentnighttwo · 08/07/2018 23:15

Well we did try to colonise the planet.

So did France, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Belgium, Russia...to name but a few...
