To think people genuinely hate England?

Is anyone else sick of seeing the anger/hatred towards England in the World Cup? This 'anyone but england' mentality from almost every other country is disheartening honestly. I've seen every excuse under the sun, we haven't played a proper team yet, 200,000 signatures to re-play the Colombia match because apparently that wasn't fair, blaming a few rowdy fans for not wanting England to win. I'm especially surprised by the amount of Scottish/Irish/Welsh people who seem to feel like this (on social media) i know we'd so be routing for our neighbours if it was the other way round! So... AIBU to think everyone just friggin hates England?!

Yes but it doesn't make it any less annoying for the millions of us who are not English.

keyboardkate · 08/07/2018 23:15

It boils down to attitude.

England fans can be obnoxious everywhere they go. Most other countries just have a bit of fun and enjoy it all and celebrate. There is a big difference in attitude I think, but I cannot fathom why.

Might be a bit of post colonial crisis going on or some other manifestation of feeling lost and needing to be top dog. Hang ups abound.

That means (in many cases) roaring and shouting, jumping on ambulances and generally not REALLY enjoying the result, but letting that anger out or something.

InfiniteVariety · 08/07/2018 23:15

I have rarely read so many sweeping generalizations in one thread

mimarbia · 08/07/2018 23:15

Why is it arrogant to say football is coming home when we ( the English) invented the sport and I for one would certainly have no qualms about supporting Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland in a tournament if England didn't get through. As for the idiots that jumped on cars and vandalised IKEA they are thankfully in a minority.

RainbowsAndSmiles · 08/07/2018 23:16

I don’t like England at all and I was born here sad if I was younger I’d move to Scotland where my ancestors came from.

What's stopping you from moving if you dislike it so much, and what's your age got to do with anything? Unless you mean you can't move because you're too old and infirm?

Louislovesmud · 08/07/2018 23:16

I also remember the Scottish referendum and remember PLENTY of people from England who were all for separation, and had a range of reasons from logical to downright offensive.

Your comment about not taking over a country and then expecting someone to cheer you on would be laughable to some of my irish friends.

Not everyone hates the English (I certainly don't), but not everyone likes them either.

Perhaps you want to expand your social circle to better help you understand others.

sailorcherries · 08/07/2018 23:16

beautiful I was there when my son's school fayre ended and stayed to tidy; I always help tidy up at parties; clear away after myself whenever I am out; pick up litter I see lying around and so forth.

No I don't conduct mass one woman clean ups of entire public spaces but I certainly try to do my bit.

It's respect for others.

Ginger1982 · 08/07/2018 23:16

It pissed me off last Tuesday night that channel 4 didn't show Ackley Bridge because they assumed we'd all be watching ITV for the match....

annandale · 08/07/2018 23:17

Colonialism was over 100 years ago??

Oh FGS educate yourself. Try reading about the Palestine Mandate, how GB treated Poland at the outset of wwii, the excellent book Making Sense of the Troubles, the Partition of India, the treatment of Egypt and the Suez crisis.... my God there's no end to it. I don't think English people like me have to creep around saying nothing but 'sorry' but if we love England and want to know her that means knowing a little history. If you don't want to do any work, just accept that there may be a few reasons why so many countries find English triumphalism unbelievably irritating and will say so.

I’m irish and there was a mixed reaction to England wining - that said its more for me as a non football follower the behaviour of the fans and what seems to me as rather awful behaviour. Most countries who won are rightly happy but some of the English fans think they own the world and don’t appear very dignified or sportsman-like.

RainbowsAndSmiles · 08/07/2018 23:18

Well we did try to colonise the planet

Other countries in Europe did too. Portugal and Spain were major ports in that era I believe (correct me if I'm wrong).
Why us all the vitriol and not the rest if it's down to colonialism?

NotTerfNorCis · 08/07/2018 23:18

There’s joy and camaraderie but also a degree of seething anger that is never far from the surface, even when celebrating. It’s weird and unsettling and not something I would associate with other countries.

Yes it's weird isn't it. Yesterday I went out after the match and was struck by how happy people seemed, going around hugging strangers. Later I learned that crowds in the centre of town had smashed up a taxi with its driver inside, for no apparent reason. Footage on the net shows dozens of people cheering on the vandals. I don't get why they'd do that. We won ffs!

kalapattar · 08/07/2018 23:18

Didn't most of the colonies come after the Union? It wasn't just England who colonised other countries. It was Great Britain.

Returnofthesmileybar · 08/07/2018 23:19

I am not a football fan so could be totally talking through my arse here but it's got to be the football fans, the loud larger louty thugs are the poster children for the English fans, nobody wants the English to win so the thugs you see in the press don't get to be all lairy and boasty. BUT I guarantee you if it was the English rugby team it would be totally different, we always (Irish) cheer on the English in the rugby. It's the fans not the country and while it's obviously a small minority then small minority manage to create havoc and violence wherever they go

Hamiltoes · 08/07/2018 23:19

maybe it's how the media portrays it, maybe ya nan & grandad told ya so... either way, just isn't true.

There you go though, prime example. Patronise the rest of the world because they don't think the sun shines out Englands arse. Insufferable. You literally piss off nearly every country in the world for one reason or another (colonialism, brexit, EDL, hooligans, expats & holiday makers i.e english bars in spain, football hooligans, Irish wars, Scottish wars, general "we're better" attitude etc) and then are bewildered why no one except england wants "football to come home". Baffling.

Unihorn · 08/07/2018 23:20

LucilleBluth
Without the English we wouldn't have the modern western world as we know it.
Statements like this probably don't do an awful lot for the argument... Grin

kalapattar · 08/07/2018 23:20

Oh FGS educate yourself. Try reading about the Palestine Mandate, how GB treated Poland at the outset of wwii, the excellent book Making Sense of the Troubles, the Partition of India, the treatment of Egypt and the Suez crisis

The British Empire has a lot to answer for.

keyboardkate · 08/07/2018 23:20

Blame the Brexiteers! They have shown everyone how to be arrogant and stupid at the same time.

The fans showed them the way long before that though!

sailorcherries · 08/07/2018 23:21

I'd also add that I don't hate the English but do hate the attitude of some English fans at the present moment (and during other sporting events).

LucilleBluth · 08/07/2018 23:21

Also as a working class northerner my ancestors were not responsible for empire.....I do not apologise, just as modern Germans are not responsible for Hitler.

howfaralong · 08/07/2018 23:21

Without the English we wouldn't have the modern western world as we know it.

To be fair you're right!

It would probably be a lot better, fairer and more just Grin

wakemeupbefore · 08/07/2018 23:21

Lucille...

"Without the English we wouldn't have the modern western world as we know it."

I fear you actually believe it Shock

MarthaArthur · 08/07/2018 23:22

Collonialism is a bullshit excuse and i studied collonialism at university.
France collonialised huge places as did germany and spain and not for the better. In fact look at what the germans did in papua new guinea. Horrendous. Oh and it was british colonialism not english colonialism. Look at what australia are doing to refugees its not much better than america. Look at what the swedish and norwegians did to the native sami people. But sure only England is responsible.

annandale · 08/07/2018 23:23

Great Britain colonised, not England? OK then. Why isn't the football team GB?
