To think these plans for the Queen's death are a bit OTT?

I won't link it unless asked as it's a DM article [thblush]

But included in the plans apparently is ten days of national mourning - and radio stations have a list on standby of "sad, respectful" songs to play during this time?

I quite like the Queen but if I put the radio on I expect pop music not sad depressing stuff Confused

AIBU?

Yes you are. Tune into Aljazeera Disco Classics if you feel that strongly at the time .

iklboo · 01/07/2018 18:48

Is 10 days of national working 10 days off work? How will the economy cope?

BarbarianMum · 01/07/2018 18:49

What does "10 days of national mourning" actually entail for the average person in the street?

ManyCrisps · 01/07/2018 18:50

You are very very unreasonable we need at least an entire month of bank holidays so we can mourn her death properly not just so we can do fuck all.

Barbie222 · 01/07/2018 18:50

Is she in a bad way?

Zampa · 01/07/2018 18:50

10 days?! I don't think people were sad that long even for Diana.

48 hours, I could understand but people die everyday and the world carries on turning.

However, if we get a fortnight off work, I'm in.

MissionItsPossible · 01/07/2018 18:51

I’ve always thought was the point of printing new money and holding it back a few years until she dies... will it not have to be reprinted when she does?

SneakyGremlins · 01/07/2018 18:51

Zampa That's kind of how I feel! 10 days? It's not like 95% of us know her personally..

Barbie she's cancelled an engagement but she's not deathly ill or anything

this scenario is rehearsed often by the military. There was a meeting just last week to make sure all was in place up here should HM or Prince Philip peg out during Royal week in scotland. It is done every year and the CO prays that it doesn't happen on his or her watch..

RealGod · 01/07/2018 18:54

"London bridge has fallen" is the official code word.

tabulahrasa · 01/07/2018 18:55

“ radio stations have a list on standby of "sad, respectful" songs to play during this time?”

I haven’t read a recent article, but as I understand it radio stations have station specific appropriate songs on stand by to be played before her death is announced, so everywhere announces it at the same time and also so you’re not cutting from a really inappropriate song.

I don’t think they then play them for the 10 days though...

Dizzywizz · 01/07/2018 18:56

10 days of mourning doesn’t mean 10 days off work though does it, it just means no exciting national events etc? Things get postponed maybe?

PuppyMonkey · 01/07/2018 18:57

Aljazeera Disco Classics, you say....

SimonBridges · 01/07/2018 18:58

What does national mourning actually mean in the country?

Shops couldn’t shut, never mind hospitals, police stations etc.
If all the schools shut then a lot of people, who possibly work as doctors/nurses/ air traffic control would have to suddenly take time off.
A lot of businesses would have to continue running.
I’m can’t see it making that much difference.

categed · 01/07/2018 18:58

10ndays mourning. Is that not to allow them time to prepare foe a state funeral and all the other changes etc that will be needed? It doesn't mean that the average person will be wailing in the streets or wearing black. It was also only be select bbc stations that have a playlist to follow. I would imagine her funeral day will be a national holiday but maybe not?

Fluffyrainbows · 01/07/2018 18:58

I just think no it's really odd they have so much planning in place for a death. And it's not like she's a miserable person. She's always colourful and smiley so why do we need a somber 10 days. Why not a celebration of her amazing long life and reign. It's all a bit weird.

SneakyGremlins · 01/07/2018 19:00

I don't have experience with Royalty dying so wasn't sure what ten days mourning meant Blush

NorthernLurker · 01/07/2018 19:00

They will just play the music for the first few hours/day. Then move on to heavily edited playlists. Ten days will be for the lying in state etc. Frankly I think it’s pretty embarrassing to be chuntering about it. The Queen is a major figure in the history of the UK. Saying her death will have no impact on you is really small minded.

Goldenbug · 01/07/2018 19:01

Seems an OK lady. Dedicated, tough job etc. But I'm not going to go round with a sad face on and doing sad things sadly for 10 fucking days. I'm going to go "Oh well. Now that fuck-wit is King!" and get on with life the same as before.

SimonBridges · 01/07/2018 19:02

Oh radio stations have a list of what do do when a whole load of people die.
Queen, Prince P and Charles then they cut into the programme.
Pope, PM and ‘next tier’ royals, at the end of the programme or on the hour.

This is all I can remember from when I was at BBC local radio 30 years ago anyway.

HarrietSchulenberg · 01/07/2018 19:02

"Sad, respectful songs"? Christ no! It was bad enough having The Verve on every bloody radio station for a fortnight after Diana died. I'll have to get my Spotify playlists ready.

TheSpottedZebra · 01/07/2018 19:02

She's always colourful and smiley

Which Queen.? Cos ours is quite the opposite of smiley. I'll give her colourful though.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 01/07/2018 19:03

10 days of mourning! so basically the world just stops. Well with the greatest respect.
I hope she has the decency to warn us all first so we can fill our cupboards and not get sick.Hmm

sunshinewithabitofdrizzle · 01/07/2018 19:04

I remember when Princess Diana died, I woke up in the morning, turned on Capital Radio as normal and they were playing "sad, respectful" songs and I obviously had no idea what was going on until they spoke between songs. I totally support them doing that for the day the Queen passes but not for 10 days.
