To think these plans for the Queen's death are a bit OTT?

I won't link it unless asked as it's a DM article [thblush]

But included in the plans apparently is ten days of national mourning - and radio stations have a list on standby of "sad, respectful" songs to play during this time?

I quite like the Queen but if I put the radio on I expect pop music not sad depressing stuff Confused

The guardian had a a long read about the plans

www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2017/mar/16/what-happens-when-queen-elizabeth-dies-london-bridge

I was bored before I even finished reading it!

It's impressive she still works, being 120 and all, but ten days, come on. Also good point @Fluffyrainbows , why not a celebration! It would be much less irritating for people who are so keen on them.

It bothers me that whilst one old person gets insane amount of fuss, another somewhere else, of equal or much more generous character, full of love, sacrificed all sorts, struggled though all sorts, can pass away without note. I find that really sad.

All the same in the next place I hope though.

Racecardriver · 01/07/2018 19:05

I don't think that 10 days of national mourning means that people are expected to mope around for ten days. It's mourning in the traditional sense, respectful and quiet.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 01/07/2018 19:05

She's always colourful and smiley.

Yeah. That's because she's got colourful and smiley money.Grin

If it helps The Guardian did a fascinating long read about this last year.

www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2017/mar/16/what-happens-when-queen-elizabeth-dies-london-bridge

When the day finally comes it’s going to be incredible to live through (Although I think I’ll end up with mourning fatigue early).

ChristmasTablecloth · 01/07/2018 19:07

I don't think people will notice we are in 10 days of national mourning. It's the Daily Mail and they like to sensationalise everything.

JacquesHammer · 01/07/2018 19:07

10 days of mourning doesn’t mean anything in real logistical terms

It will be a period of reflection and remembrance in the run up to the funeral.

Supermarkets will still open.

Churrolicious · 01/07/2018 19:08

Ooops cross post with LuMarie

I find it fascinating the random people in offices somewhere having to prepare the different elements - and the fact whether the West End theatre shows will close is dependent on the time of day she dies!

formerbabe · 01/07/2018 19:08

I think the country will go to shit when the queen dies. I think it will really affect the public more than we can imagine.

campion · 01/07/2018 19:08

Hope HM's not a mumsnetter!

Fluffyrainbows · 01/07/2018 19:08

She always looks pretty happy to me! But I don't spend much time following her to be fair. The bizarre handling of Diana's death as a country does make it worrying though.

I'm not a Royalist, but she's had a long, healthy life, hence my celebration suggestion. I would feel sad for her family as I would with anyone passing but on the positive, for her family, what an amazing life.

SneakyGremlins · 01/07/2018 19:12

Thanks for all the links!

I'm not saying it won't be a shame when she dies, I'm not heartless Blush

If we ar3 going to get 10 days off work, could Her Maj please oblige her subjects by popping off at some point between May & September?

Thanks Ma’am Smile

SpitefulMidLifeAnimal · 01/07/2018 19:14

I'm sure 10 days mourning will just be newsreaders in black suits, flags at half mast, no footy and sombre radio. Pretty sure shops, banks, offices, factories etc. won't close.

rosesgarden · 01/07/2018 19:15

I find the whole idea of mourning a stranger a bit odd. I also find it odd that we still have a "queen".

LakieLady · 01/07/2018 19:16

I’ve always thought was the point of printing new money and holding it back a few years until she dies... will it not have to be reprinted when she does?

It will remain legal tender, until notes of that design are withdrawn because of a change in the design or whatever.

Us oldies can remember coins with previous monarchs on being around long after their demise. I was fascinated when I found pennies and stuff with Queen Victoria on during the 1960s.

Decimalisation put a stop to all that.

user1491414509 · 01/07/2018 19:17

Perhaps she is getting ready to be too ill to meet President
Twunt? Just saying. 😜

OddBoots · 01/07/2018 19:18

At least in this age anyone who wants more upbeat music at such a time can turn to Spotify or Amazon or even their own CD or MP3 collection. I imagine the only day off work will be the day of the funeral then the day of the coronation a while later.

rosy71 · 01/07/2018 19:18

I agree

When the Queen Mother died, her coffin was guarded by 4 soldiers 24 hours a day and the public could file past to pay their respects. The night before her funeral it was guarded by her 4 grandsons. I imagine something similar would happen for the queen. The 10 days is probably the time between her dying and there being a state funeral. It will all be very strange.

KickAssAngel · 01/07/2018 19:20

Won't that just be 10 days when she's lying in state & people can go & see her in Westminster Abbey, or something like that?
That then gives world leaders a chance to fly over before a big funeral.

TheClitterati · 01/07/2018 19:21

Does anyone even still listen to music on the radio?

rosy71 · 01/07/2018 19:22

I can remember one shilling and 2 shilling coins being used as 5ps and 10ps and I was born after decimalisation. Some of them still had the Queen's father on despite him dying in 1952 and decimalisation happening in 1971.

MexicanBob · 01/07/2018 19:22

I suspect, if the truth were known, plans have been in place since the day after the coronation. It just that now some journos think it's newsworthy.

MexicanBob · 01/07/2018 19:24

Pre-decimalisation, all coins minted after 1837 were legal tender, so you could have a pocketful of change with coins of every monarch from Victoria onwards.
