To think these plans for the Queen's death are a bit OTT?

I won't link it unless asked as it's a DM article [thblush]

But included in the plans apparently is ten days of national mourning - and radio stations have a list on standby of "sad, respectful" songs to play during this time?

I quite like the Queen but if I put the radio on I expect pop music not sad depressing stuff Confused

AIBU?

This is old news surely. I remember the original story in The Guardian a while back, so I'm not sure why it's suddenly back in the news? Unless she' ill? When was the last time she was seen in public?

LakieLady · 01/07/2018 21:06

It will be a major culture change - a lot of us have never experienced the death of a reigning monarch. I don't think we really know what to expect

Read the Guardian link someone posted upthread, it spells it out in quite some detail.

Hopefully, it will be the beginning of the end of the veneration of the monarchy. Even I concede that Betty has done a damn good job of being the nominal head of state, but I have no confidence in her son, who has already tried to meddle in political matters and the next generation seem to be much more ordinary (well, as ordinary as you can be when you live in a palace etc).

Ilovewhippets · 01/07/2018 21:11

. The place was full of royal fans and I couldn't bear it.
Lakie I thought a lot of Diana fans weren't fans of the rest of the Royal Family?

Bunnyfuller · 01/07/2018 21:16

Didn’t it used to be High Treason to speak of the demise of....

You lot are getting your fucking heads chopped off, no mistake.
Runs to the tower shrieking ‘Mumsnet’

LakieLady · 01/07/2018 21:18

You could be right, Whippets, it's all much of a muchness to me.

I just find the whole institution of monarchy inequitable, undemocratic and anachronistic, so I tend not to discuss it with people who find it interesting. I try and avoid things that raise my blood pressure to the point where I'm at risk of giving myself a stroke.

LeahJack · 01/07/2018 21:19

This is old news surely.

They’ve actually rehearsed it now though. The plans were written down when the Guardian got hold of them, but it’s not been given a full rehearsal until now.

NetofLemons · 01/07/2018 21:21

I will miss her after she is gone. I don’t feel the same way about the other royals at all. She’s such a unique link to the past- the ethos of duty she grew up with and all the other cultural baggage she has- for good or ill. It’s amazing to think of the national and international events she’s seen, the people she’s met all over the UK and around the world, the way she’s part of our national imagination here and of our national story. She’s seen so many prime ministers come and go, she’s seen wars, riots, massive social change, the end of the aristocracy, capitalism get into every area of life, the Internet etc etc.

Bibesia · 01/07/2018 21:22

Where do people get the idea that ten days of national mourning equates to ten days off work? It's pretty obvious that it won't. And I'm sure much of it will involve a celebration of her life rather that everyone going around being sad.

ChristmasTablecloth · 01/07/2018 21:26

Of course they have rehearsed it for decades! If she'd died 10 years ago she would have had a good innings. If she'd died in a freak accident they would have had to be prepared. How could any fule think otherwise?

Unfinishedkitchen · 01/07/2018 21:27

I’m going to go against the grain in regards to Prince Charles. I think people will be surprised, I genuinely believe he will be a good monarch. He meddles because he cares. For example he was into environmental affairs before it became fashionable. He’s a bit odd but that’s no bad thing. He has his own mind and isn’t a bad person despite being an adulterer (he was forced to marry Diana.

brizzledrizzle · 01/07/2018 21:33

It will be a major culture change - a lot of us have never experienced the death of a reigning monarch. I don't think we really know what to expect

It'll be a big funeral, lots of flowers outside the palaces, people signing condolences books perhaps and a King.

It was on the front page of the Sunday times in brief, they've stepped up the planning due to her age but plans have been in place for ages - we had them at work back in the 1980s.

I once met Camilla at a party and she told me the filthiest joke Blush

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 01/07/2018 21:44

I’ll have my radio pretuned to the Al Jazeera Disco Channel. Not a royal fan, and while I don’t wish them any ill, I’d like to see the whole thing come to an end when the Queen passes.

SneakyGremlins · 01/07/2018 21:44

What joke? Grin

keyboardkate · 01/07/2018 21:46

According to some reports I have read Camilla spends a lot of time in her own home as does Charles, separately.

That is the recipe for a good partnership IMV. No scandals yet anyway, but who would want to be tethered to Charles every day and night. God you'd have to suffer his valet to lay out his clothes and make his life good. That is awful. Maybe he never grew up or did anything for himself.

Still they are together, but apart. Perfect.

auditqueen · 01/07/2018 21:49

Saying her death will have no impact on you is really small minded.

Errr, I don't know her. I am not related to her.

How exactly will the death if someone I don't know and am not related to impact me?

EstrellaDamn · 01/07/2018 21:50

AlJazeera Disco Classics!

Jesus Shock

Pringlecat · 01/07/2018 21:51

Well, the Queen dying will be a big deal. Many people respect the Queen because the reigning monarch happens to be Queen Elizabeth and she seems to be an alright sort. She's liked despite her position not because of it. The rest of her family, Charles in particular, aren't held in the same level of esteem.

The Queen's death will probably mark the end of the monarchy as we know it.

rosesgarden · 01/07/2018 21:54

Her Maj ain't going nowhere anytime soon. She looks FANTASTIC for a woman of her years. Own teeth, great hair, good skin, can walk up and down steps, doesn't need any walking aids and working away

Great genes I suppose.

Or maybe the benefit of a lifetime of being very well looked after?.....Servants in constant attendance, the best food, private doctors, physicians etc etc. No waiting lists for the queen.

She's never had to do any physical toil, never had to worry about paying bills, feeding and clothing her kids, heating the house......struggling to make ends meet. Most women of her generation had to struggle with all that. Life was very hard for most women in those times, hard times certainly take their toll. Her good health is more to do with a life of extreme privilege rather than any "good genes" she might have.

megletthesecond · 01/07/2018 22:00

I find it fascinating. End of an era and all that Sad.

MLMsuperfan · 01/07/2018 22:09

I think the Queen's successor should be elected. Charles can stand, William could stand if he likes. Let the people decide (like Brexit).

EstrellaDamn · 01/07/2018 22:16

Misses the point of a hereditary monarchy somewhat though.

I'd see them all have to go about their lives like normal people tomorrow if possible though, I'm not defending the system at all.

keyboardkate · 01/07/2018 22:23

OK let us be morbid and a tad disrespectful possibly,

Charlie on the throne? No wonder his mother keeps going to keep him out of the way. Well that's what I think anyway. He is odd. But Camilla loves him I suppose. No reason to be the King either though.

The next generation will be ok. Will tell them all to F off and they will be like the Spanish and just turn up occasionally for Hola magazine.

Sorry now, but it is all an accident of birth and good marriage arrangements. Isn't it?

bluebell34567 · 01/07/2018 22:48

I find it a bit odd, disrespectful talking about what will be done - in front of him/her while they are still alive- when they die, even if you dont like them. these things should be discreet.

bluebell34567 · 01/07/2018 22:50

Charlie will be fine on the throne.
