To think these plans for the Queen's death are a bit OTT?

I won't link it unless asked as it's a DM article [thblush]

But included in the plans apparently is ten days of national mourning - and radio stations have a list on standby of "sad, respectful" songs to play during this time?

I quite like the Queen but if I put the radio on I expect pop music not sad depressing stuff Confused

She doesn't merit 'respect'. I don't really give a fuck about the old cow. She's just there, and apart from the money she costs the state, is a complete irrelevance. So are her freeloading family.

juneybean · 03/07/2018 13:56

"Old Cow" lovely.

In theory, I doesn't agree with having a monarchy. It cannot be justified. However, I think the Queen has been an amazing monarch. It will be incredibly sad for this country when she dies.

Somtamthai · 03/07/2018 16:15

There was a 1 year mourning period when the king of Thailand died.

She's a symbol of a bygone age to me. A different time, a different way of thinking.

My mother, 80, clapped her hands together thinking how wonderful and delightful it was that prince William knew how to put a bloody baby seat into his car when George was born. ''Did you see him on the telly?! Oh he walked round and put the baby seat in the car himself !'' Yes mum, i assume he managed to shag Kate all on his own as well to get her pregnant ... how amazing Hmm (i didn't actually say that at the time)

The thing is, this sort of attitude towards them just makes me want to throw up. And it makes it impossible for me think straight about weather they're 'worth' the amount of wealth, privilege and arse licking they happily accept or not.

The Queen's death will be a far more significant event in many countries than Diana's death was.

For a start, it will prompt discussions about republics, leaving the Commonwealth etc. The Australian PM has already voiced his intention of having another republic referendum if he is leader when the Queen dies. The opposition leader is also a republican. I would be quite surprised if the referendum failed this time.

And I think when one of the big Commonwealth countries votes to become a republic, the others will do the same in quick succession (New Zealand and Canada).

Diana's death provoked nothing of the sort.

ReanimatedSGB · 04/07/2018 11:15

Oh, I agree it will have political significance. Just not that it should be compulsory to be sad when some old woman who you don't know finally pops off after a long but very comfortable life.

rosesgarden · 04/07/2018 11:50

In years to come children will read about "royal families" in their history books in amazement. The idea that one family, through the accident of birth were treated with such awe and reverence. That we had a "monarch" who was our head of state, church and armed forces with no qualifications but to be born, and regardless of any merit.

That their huge wealth was never earned and the taxpayers, though struggling with low pay, austerity measures, public services cut to the bone, unaffordable housing, zero hours contracts, sanctions, bedroom tax etc etc etc failed to see the huge injustice and were quite happy to have one family receive £365 million every year to live lives of obscene luxury. Shock

It will be kind of entertaining if she pops off in the middle of one of the men's football matches, though. Especially if it's the men's World Cup Final. Wouldn't you hate to be the TV company boss bricking it about whether to interrupt the coverage of the men's football to announce that Liz Windsor's finally had her chips?

Dumela · 05/07/2018 00:53

I used to do some work at BP and Windsor Castle. I remember one day there was a rehearsal for Prince Phillip's funeral and the details were fascinating but at the same time, I found the whole exercise very very strange.
Mind you this was about 8 years ago!

AJPTaylor · 05/07/2018 06:37

you would think that.
but look at all the hoo ha when Diana died. and when the queen mum died at 102 it was pretty full on.
just as well there is netflix

PurpleFlower1983 · 05/07/2018 07:10

The Queen’s death will be a huge, significant event in our lifetime. She is considered one of the greatest British monarchs and her death may spell the end of our relationship with some of the Commonwealth countries etc. It is appropriate that it is marked in a significant way.

Kind of bizarre to be entertained by someone dying.

In any event the protocol doesn’t work like that, when she does die the announcement won’t be made for a number of hours so no big decision will be necessary.

It's absolutely crazy the fawning and adulation for one very privileged cosseted old lady. She's no better than any of us. She takes out far more than she puts in that's for sure. There's so many under privileged people in this country, just how in the name of fuck does having a queen benefit them. Or anyone else for that matter.

One thing it proves though, how easy it is to brainwash the people. Just because something's always been there doesn't mean we should accept it as right.

Dumela · 05/07/2018 21:22

It's just crazy. Like somekind of a demigod. What is worrying is how people who are supposed to know better, have been sucked in. Sad
