To think these plans for the Queen's death are a bit OTT?

I won't link it unless asked as it's a DM article [thblush]

But included in the plans apparently is ten days of national mourning - and radio stations have a list on standby of "sad, respectful" songs to play during this time?

I quite like the Queen but if I put the radio on I expect pop music not sad depressing stuff Confused

I reckon Liz is feigning a cough so she doesn't have to meet Trump

LakieLady · 01/07/2018 20:35

I reckon she's trying to outlive Charles.

I rather hope she does, tbh. Having a monarch in the 21st century is ludicrous enough without that monarch being a meddling weirdo who wanted to be a tampon.

TheDairyQueen · 01/07/2018 20:38

I can imagine that Netflix usage will surge as Nicolas Witchell will get wheeled out of cold storage or whatever cryotank the Beeb keep him fresh in, MN will go into meltdown because the bunfight will be spectacularly AH-MAH-ZING, and I can finally cruise along the motorway without interruptions and get home at a reasonable time.

He may want to be a tampon, but I'd say he's an even bigger fanny.

LeahJack · 01/07/2018 20:38

It is more likely to be Prince Philip who will go first but there will still be a huge state funeral and protocol with poor queen will have to sit through in the public eye.

I don’t think there will be much fuss when he dies. Nobody got a day off for the QM who was probably more popular better at hiding racism.

And he’s not really the type anyway. I think he may well have a private funeral and maybe a thanksgiving service later. It will get swamped with SJWs being cross I imagine.

keyboardkate · 01/07/2018 20:38

MissMarpels

So funny, and TBH I don't blame her either!

clumsyduck · 01/07/2018 20:41

In the nicest possible way , genuinely , why is the queen dying anymore important than anyone else who dies ?

Altho Iv always had problems with arse licking those in authority Sooo maybe just me

tempester28 · 01/07/2018 20:43

It means 10 whole days for the the Gov to bury bad news!

strawberrypenguin · 01/07/2018 20:43

Actually I think YAB a bit U. It will be a major culture change - a lot of us have never experienced the death of a reigning monarch. I don't think we really know what to expect

Optimist1 · 01/07/2018 20:44

Perhaps she is getting ready to be too ill to meet President
Twunt?

Inspired observation, @user1491414509 ! I can imagine her justifying her decision as "I've done ninety million queen jobs in the past 60-odd years. At home, abroad, on my birthday, when I'm feeling a bit under the weather and when I'm bored to the back teeth. I reckon I'm entitled to pull a sickie just once in my reign!" Grin

tempester28 · 01/07/2018 20:46

I think whatever people feel about the Monarchy, the Queens death will be very difficult for this Country.

WelshMumof1 · 01/07/2018 20:49

None of it will affect the average person on the street unless we end up getting an extra holiday day out of it, so it doesn't really matter what pomp and circumstance they plan for.

A national day of mourning involves the country doing some activity such as a memorial service, flying flags at half mast etc. it doesn't mean a holiday or that any day to day running of the country, shops, schools etc. will be affected.

EdWinchester · 01/07/2018 20:52

I suspect life will continue as normal for most of us and all the crap spewed about sombre music and enforced mourning etc is bollocks.and harks back to a byegone age when it mattered more.

I certainly, will be living my life as normal.

AlbertaSimmons · 01/07/2018 20:52

I can't imagine we'll get a holiday out of it, the funeral will cost millions as it is, never mind the loss to the economy if we all down tools to watch it Hmm.

"It bothers me that whilst one old person gets insane amount of fuss, another somewhere else, of equal or much more generous character, full of love, sacrificed all sorts, struggled though all sorts, can pass away without note. I find that really sad."

Totally agree with this, how sad someone born on the same day but under different circumstances could go alone with no friends or family to miss them. I like the Queen and royals but there are already some elderly people who need planning and help now.

LeahJack · 01/07/2018 20:54

We will get one day off for her. Definitely.

LeahJack · 01/07/2018 20:55

When Diana died the radio stations played weird music all day. It was very, very odd.

On R4, they managed to shoehorn in a reference to her death in the Omnibus edition of the Archers.

I was staying with friends who don't have the tv or radio on unless there's a programme they want to watch/listen to, so we didn't know about it until a mate of theirs came round and mentioned it. He's a notorious wind-up merchant and prankster, so we didn't believe him. He had to insist we turn the tv on so that we knew he wasn't taking the piss.

I was bloody glad I was away and not at work. I worked in the building that held the book of condolence for the town. Diana had visited a few years earlier and quite a few staff had met her. The place was full of royal fans and I couldn't bear it.

One of my colleagues was also a republican, and got utterly sick of having to fight her way through the throng of devastated subjects queuing to sign the bloody book to get to her office. Towards the end of the week, some old biddy snapped "There's a queue, you know", to which my mate replied "There is some work, you know, and I'm trying to get upstairs to do it!".

Nearly caused a bloody riot.

Kismett · 01/07/2018 20:56

@LeahJack interesting! I wonder when the legal and cultural shifts occurred. It apparently doesn't bother anyone else though.

I also find it odd that the Queen's Christmas message is reported in such detail before she delivers it. What's the point in watching her then?

Just some random observations from an outsider!

AngeloMysterioso · 01/07/2018 20:56

I was 11 when Diana died and remember being thoroughly pissed off that there was nothing but depressing music on the radio for days on end

SimonBridges · 01/07/2018 20:58

Well Diana’s funeral was on a Saturday and damn near all the shops shut so people could watch.
Many shops closed for the queen mothers funeral too, but not where I worked even though we held her warrant!

LeahJack · 01/07/2018 20:59

Sorry, pressed send too soon before. Actually I have all these weird feelings tied up with the Queen which involve a lot of other people. She just feels representative of that whole ‘greatest generation’ to me and I feel an awful lot of sadness at that generation disappearing. Lovely people I grew up with who used to give me 50ps and sherbet dips. People who had grown up in hardship we have never known and who faced frightening things but kept their heads.

I will feel very sad when she dies, but mainly for a passing of a generation and an era than for her.

ErrolTheDragon · 01/07/2018 21:01

May I respectfully suggest creating a playlist for when the sad day does arrive

We really should. Are there any about horses, I'm sure she'd like that but I can't think of any appropriate ones.

MrsSarahSiddons · 01/07/2018 21:04

I think they’re worried that having to meet the arse Trump might have a serious effect on her health.

Silvercatowner · 01/07/2018 21:04

She's a huge stabilising influence on our country. On the back of brexit I dread to think what will happen when that stabilising influence has gone.
