To ask what social class you would say I am?

Hello!

So my friends and I were discussing class issues and one friend told me that I would have 'no idea about anything as I'm upper class' and another strangly interupted and mentioned that I'm working not upper class? I personally thought I was middle?

My situation is:
5 bed house worth 900K, no mortgage
2 Teenagers
Lucky enough to pay for their uni fees and sixth form fees, both at private sixth form, one went to a grammar and the other a state secondary school
DD owns a pony and DS used to
DD plays the violin and DS the drums
2 holidays a year (one longer one and either a week in cornwall/scotland or a couple of weekend city breaks)
Household income of 110-140K depending on the year as DH is self employed and can earn up to 90K.

I promise I'm not boasting or anything, we give 10K a year to charity and DS is in the process of persuading his dad to give his uni fees to a charity.

So what class would I be in your opinion?

Like others, I am still boggling at that livery bill. That can't possibly be true?
You need 'room for a pony' op. Much better to let your d learn to look after it herself, it's character building don't you know.

Tomatoesrock · 01/07/2018 22:52

I am not sure, but I would love your life, I will probably never have even close to it so you are definitely not working class.

DiamondMagpie · 01/10/2018 15:51

Well you are definitely not upper class. You have immediately broken a cardinal rule..never discuss finances unless you are talking to a bank or an advisor and certainly dont divulge how much you have paid for anything The upper class would not be seen dead discussing on social media how much they are worth, how much thier house is worth or exactly what luxuries they have. The art of true upper class (British Upper Class anyway) is not being able to be pointed out as British Upper Class

Lynne1Cat · 01/10/2018 15:54

You (and your friends) are snobs, show-offs. That makes you WITHOUT class

BertrandRussell · 01/10/2018 16:00

Social class is nothing to do with money. The fact that you think it is means you are certainly not upper or upper middle.

JellyBears · 01/10/2018 16:08

Goady much and I’m not jealous I just don’t think you needed to start a how wonderful and rich I am thread.

PlainVanilla · 01/10/2018 16:08

Did you inherit your silver?
How do you hold your knife?

lessthanBeau · 01/10/2018 16:50

If you have to ask, then definitely not upper class. 😁

KenAdams · 01/10/2018 17:06

Zombie

ApproachingATunnel · 01/10/2018 17:13

As indicated by your post- desperate wannabe class.
Hth

Snog · 01/10/2018 17:31

Ok these are my thoughts for what it's worth.

Upper class - you are in debretts and you went to public school. Not a private school, it must be a public school. You probs have a trust fund. You don't give a flying fuck about what anyone thinks of anything you do. You do not have a regional accent.

Working class - an argument to be made that anyone who works for a living is working class - but it's more accepted that middle class is professional people.
Lower middle classes own a business eg a shop.

To be upper middle you are definitely privately educated and professional at a partner level or on the way to it. You probs got your job via your family connections. Again no regional accents.

Class is much more about education and connections than it is about money. This is to protect the status quo. Self made "nouveau riche" are looked down upon as dangerously socially mobile.

Slipp3rs · 01/10/2018 17:44

Class and having money are two different things.

You are born with class. The fact you don’t know what class is shows you have none.

You sound like you fall under Nouveau riche. People who think money will buy them class

WheelOfMisfortune · 01/10/2018 17:50

Zombie thread crawls from his grave....

belinda789 · 01/10/2018 19:09

Flowers and Cake
The words "parvenu" and arriviste spring to mind but I hope that they do not describe the real you...…...

Haahhpy · 01/10/2018 19:46

I'd say you're a first class knobber

CherryPavlova · 01/10/2018 19:56

You are mentioning your income in a rather crass way. The number of children is irrelevant.

The fact you need to mention a pony is very funny. At sixth form aren’t they a bit big for some poor Exmoor or New Forest? Do they hunt or show? Or are the animals simply possessions? The group who have highest equine ownership within their community are travellers.

I can’t see your education attainment levels.

What meals do you eat?
What rooms does your house have?
What breed of dog do you have?
What did your husbands father do?
Scotland is good - who do you stay with? Do you fish and shoot?
What do your children call you?
What car do you drive?

You sound insecure but aspirational lower middle morge and definitely new money.

Haahhpy · 01/10/2018 20:22

None of the crap about the size of your house or how many ponies you have matters anyway from a Marxian perspective, which is I think the definitive class structure. If you aren't the owner of the means of production you can't be considered a member of the bourgeoisie.

AuntBeastie · 01/10/2018 20:27

I can’t decide what’s more hilarious and cringe - the OP’s initial show offy post, or all the subsequent sneering comments attempting to put her back in her place. It’s all a total embarrassment and this thread was not worthy of resurrection.

Facade1983 · 01/10/2018 20:37

I refer you to my earlier post. I believe OP was simply a journalist whipping up outrageous opinion to give the bones of a low newspaper article. And it has been fun - it's a fascinating topic.

MargaretDribble · 01/10/2018 20:41
Biscuit
Sweetpea55 · 01/10/2018 20:51

I think your working class who likes to think your better than you are
And what on earth has a pony got to do with it

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 01/10/2018 20:53

Based on your post I'd say you've got cash but not dash OP. But this kind of question is exactly what Mumsnet is for so good on you for asking!

You don't appear to own an estate or a second property somewhere terribly exotic so I'm going to have to say middle class....

crimson72 · 01/10/2018 21:36

Not sure. I know a couple who earn considerably more than you do (around £280k-£300k between them) and I would regard them as upper-middle class. To me, upper class denotes old money/minor aristocracy, and my friends aren’t that.

Aspenfrost · 01/10/2018 21:54

You’re...🙄

twattymctwatterson · 01/10/2018 21:58
