Hello!

So my friends and I were discussing class issues and one friend told me that I would have 'no idea about anything as I'm upper class' and another strangly interupted and mentioned that I'm working not upper class? I personally thought I was middle?

My situation is:
5 bed house worth 900K, no mortgage
2 Teenagers
Lucky enough to pay for their uni fees and sixth form fees, both at private sixth form, one went to a grammar and the other a state secondary school
DD owns a pony and DS used to
DD plays the violin and DS the drums
2 holidays a year (one longer one and either a week in cornwall/scotland or a couple of weekend city breaks)
Household income of 110-140K depending on the year as DH is self employed and can earn up to 90K.

I promise I'm not boasting or anything, we give 10K a year to charity and DS is in the process of persuading his dad to give his uni fees to a charity.

So what class would I be in your opinion?

OMG who gives a shit what class you are

longwayoff · 01/10/2018 22:02

I wouldn't say. That would be extremely ill mannered.

Thatstheendofmytether · 01/10/2018 22:08

Well your friend is wrong, you are not upper class if you are sitting around talking about class and money 😂. You should probably all grow up!

BanginChoons · 01/10/2018 22:12

Is class even a thing any more?

CantankerousCamel · 01/10/2018 22:13

Middle. Upper class seriously don’t have to worry about making money from employment in the same way.

Nor do they associate with or spend time with anyone who is Not also upper class.

They don’t discuss money, they are generally incredibly generous

Until you’ve met on, you don’t really know the difference between rich and Rich

Mariatequila · 01/10/2018 22:24

No where near rich enough for it to not matter; so Middle Class.

Talith · 01/10/2018 22:25

"Room for a pony" class?

AuroraN · 01/10/2018 22:28

What was the point in resurrecting this thread?

Thatstheendofmytether · 01/10/2018 22:35

It's a bit tragic how so many people are bitter towards me.

It's a bit tragic you felt tje need to come on here and ask this question really!

looondonn · 01/10/2018 22:36

this is hilarious

never ever understood this class BS

Imamouseduh · 01/10/2018 22:36

Class is complex, it’s not based on possessions or income. Your preoccupation with it signals middle class though!

Lamona · 01/10/2018 22:50

matadornetwork.com/life/british-class-belong-based-vocabulary-quiz/

I'm upper middle because i say loo and pudding. Financially and workwise def lower middle/working.

But then again, i won't talk about it with anyone I know!

Growingboys · 01/10/2018 23:40

Lower middle

hmmwhatatodo · 01/10/2018 23:51

I’m middle middle class according to Lamonas little quiz but unfortunately that isn’t quite true though I think I’d quite like to be middle middle class.

there seems to be confusion between aristocracy and upper class, some are both, but many of the aristocracy are jumped up parvenus whose ancestors bought their titles... the two are certainly not an exact match... upper class are those whose ancestors have been that class long enough that no-one can remember anything different, and where you stop bothering to trace ancestors because a) you have published histories of your family anyway, and b) it gets boring going back so far (I think that we traditionally stop back in 700)

signs of the upper class will be things like land ownership through the generations / ownership of houses which have no address other than the house name and town / county (eg Chatsworth, Derbyshire :) ) / being armigerous and having your coat of arms accepted in the heralds' visitations as having been present for time immemorial- so our coat of arms dates back to the 1400s and is recognised as one of the earliest...

no titles in our direct line (though plenty amongst cousins etc) but def. upper class - family known as xxxxx of location for 500+ years in the same house / cousins swapping estates for fun / family members with multiple estates...

but not aristocratic per se as no title... and only saying all this as it is anonymous on here... one of the main signs of upper class is that actually you don’t care about wealth or class - I would call myself classless because it is meaningless to me and I have friends from all sorts of backgrounds, and couldn't care less... but I would be defined as upper class... Not caring is one of the biggest clues - comments above ref. eating in the street - the true upper class couldn't care because they know that their social status is based on centuries of their family being who they are, not on whether they eat a sandwich in the street... in that sense they are similar to the working class who generally also don't care (middle class is defined as caring about status) which is why so many activities are done jointly by working and upper classes (dogs / horses / hunting / shooting / etc.)

bowdownbeforelokitty · 02/10/2018 01:29

The trolling class, but don't dispair it's numbers are growing daily and you can take much comfort in your 900k bridge.Grin

jcyclops · 02/10/2018 01:45

I would say you are working class.

Working class are those who earn their living from their own labour (physical or mental) whilst producing economic value for others. For convenience, those reliant on benefits, handouts and casual employment are also working class. Upper class make their living from the labour of others, or from accumulated wealth. It is nothing to do with your personal possessions, how you spend your money, your education, or your social circle. With these definitions there is no real middle class.

MissLadyM · 02/10/2018 02:00

I'd say you're tacky, vulgar and smug. Nouveau riche and certainly not upper class!

wafflyversatile · 02/10/2018 02:23

You're working class. As per PPs.

Middle class is just a subset of working class.
