To ask what social class you would say I am?

Hello!

So my friends and I were discussing class issues and one friend told me that I would have 'no idea about anything as I'm upper class' and another strangly interupted and mentioned that I'm working not upper class? I personally thought I was middle?

My situation is:
5 bed house worth 900K, no mortgage
2 Teenagers
Lucky enough to pay for their uni fees and sixth form fees, both at private sixth form, one went to a grammar and the other a state secondary school
DD owns a pony and DS used to
DD plays the violin and DS the drums
2 holidays a year (one longer one and either a week in cornwall/scotland or a couple of weekend city breaks)
Household income of 110-140K depending on the year as DH is self employed and can earn up to 90K.

I promise I'm not boasting or anything, we give 10K a year to charity and DS is in the process of persuading his dad to give his uni fees to a charity.

So what class would I be in your opinion?

I cringed for you reading your post.

I think you just sound like a cow who has invented a conversation in order to boast to people on the internet.

But that’s just me.

I love the fact people are trying to put you down by the fact that you have asked the question! I bet if I were to meet you that you are relatively cultured and well spoken. Your firmly in middle class if you ask me. I am too but then my parents were (well off) working class so I think that enables me to tell the difference.

Life's more fluid these days, middle class (or more accurately a middle class lifestyle) is not just for professionals anymore.

My dad was a builder and was frequently talked down to by his middle class customers. He put up with it though because their money paid my school fees. These days, where I live anyhow, the builders are very affluent, driving range rovers and easily paying prep fees. It's not acceptable to be a snob anymore and I think that's a great thing. Bring on the meritocracy.

Well this thread has turned into MN at its worse.. Hmm

Whatthefoxgoingon · 28/06/2018 12:38

If someone says "Have you seen my new ride on lawnmower/ pony/ gazebo?" I usually ask to borrow it. People soon shut up about what they have then.

Genius. Shamelessly borrowing this tactic Grin

Anyone who descends from the upper class and marries into the upper class (so says the OP!) is solidly upper class, which is at odds with the OP's posts in every possible way.

Your class detector is broken.

SpandexTutu · 28/06/2018 12:44

If you think class is based on possessions/lifestyle then you aren't high enough to understand how the class system works.

^ this

RoadToRivendell · 28/06/2018 12:50

I think you could probably count on your fingers the number of actual upper class children in state education in the UK.

I think it's state till 8 for the middles and possibly the upper middles, but bear in mind that the uppers are aristocracy.

RoseWhiteTips · 28/06/2018 12:51

You’re firmly...etc

dundermiflin · 28/06/2018 12:55

I'm really confused. How would reading papers and studies make you working class?

I don't live in the UK so this baffles me. My mum is British, raised on a farm and educated. I took that test that was posted and got 'upper middle class'. Which I laughed at as I'm not privately educated. I think the only reason I got that result was that I use words she used around me growing up.

RoseWhiteTips · 28/06/2018 12:56

If your father was a builder you are still working class. It is not about money.

RoseWhiteTips · 28/06/2018 12:58

For instance, the genuine middle class would not divulge income or types of cars or spell professional wrongly!

SilverySurfer · 28/06/2018 13:01

A fascinating thread.

I have no idea what class you are OP. I think some people who are working class, by dint of education and profession, may migrate to middle class. Others, regardless of having oodles of cash will remain firmly working class. Wayne Rooney is a classic example.

Interestingly, someone in the upper class, eg aristocracy, will remain firmly upper, regardless of any diminished circumstances.

Blueisland · 28/06/2018 13:01

Oh this thread makes me cringe!

JacintaJones · 28/06/2018 13:01

I know many middle class adults who are very poor at SPAG.

I'm a WC proofreader by way of explanation.

RoseWhiteTips · 28/06/2018 13:02

Neither would they stealth boast about their children being privately educated. Many would send their children to a comprehensive school primarily I think because they are confident in themselves and they know they have nothing to prove. Their children will probably do well anyway because there will often be a strong emphasis on education etc at home.

RoseWhiteTips · 28/06/2018 13:03

Regarding spelling and grammar competence, you cannot, of course, rely on anecdotal evidence.

RoseWhiteTips · 28/06/2018 13:05

But lots of British people are fascinated by this topic, Blueisland. Who are you not?

cheeseandonionstarlore · 28/06/2018 13:07

depends on where you were brought up, what your parents did etc. Upper class implies what used to be called "breeding" if your parents or grandparents were working or middle class then you are nouveau riche.

I know quite a lot of middles who are prone to boasting and poor writing in general. Outside of MN SPAG is not a huge thing, IME (which is not to say it's forsaken, exactly).

belinda789 · 28/06/2018 13:11

@ pallisers

Frightfully pleased to see that someone else on here has also read "Ten Sixty Six and All That. We know what class we are...........

RoseWhiteTips · 28/06/2018 13:11

What is wrong with this site today? So sticky. Grrr

Blueisland · 28/06/2018 13:16

RoseWhite

I think class is interesting, so that’s why I clicked on the thread. It’s all the disclosure of personal financial information and possessions that makes me cringe.
