Semi see-through dress to a work do

No, I'm not entirely thick, but we have a work event on Thursday and the theme is Caribbean.

I bought this dress.
Unfortunately I only tried it on this evening and it's a little bit see-through.
I've nothing else to blooming wear for this god-damned themed crap. I've bought a colourful necklace yokeymebob for around my neck and will wear nude coloured underwear (still have to buy the knickers) but....
Would you completely re-think outfit? The fabric is quite thin...?

Really depends where/ what industry you work in. I imagine you’ll know best really!

whatyadoing · 10/06/2018 22:12

Will I look like the biggest tart in the village? Bollox if I can't wear it as I've nothing else Caribbean styled. WTF is Caribbean anyway! Sheez. The stress!

It’s a beach dress, it really a going out dress. How formal is this do? I wouldn’t choose it as a works do outfit if it’s see through. Are you going out to eat or clubbing?

CloudCaptain · 10/06/2018 22:13

It looks pretty inappropriate to me for a work do even if it wasn't see through. But it depends on what industry you are in, etc.

MadMags · 10/06/2018 22:13

Depends on the industry you’re in.

SmileEachDay · 10/06/2018 22:13

Bikini top and denim shorts underneath?

whatyadoing · 10/06/2018 22:13

Event is in Crowne Plaza Chelmsford - it's an office based work environment.

Entirely up to you how comfortable you are. I’d make sure my knickers and bra definitely were not in the slightest bit see through (white often are) and go for it

SleepFreeZone · 10/06/2018 22:13

Could you put some shorts underneath it?

WilburIsSomePig · 10/06/2018 22:14

Agreed, that it kind of depends on what industry you're in. I would probably be more inclined to wear a brightly coloured swimming costume underneath, rather than nude, if the theme is Caribbean.

Tinycitrus · 10/06/2018 22:14

No not for a work do whatever industry you are in. You will need to get something else.

Glaciferous · 10/06/2018 22:15

I would go and buy a knee length white waist slip from M&S or similar in a bigger than usual size and attach it to the band at the top with a few stitches. That should preserve your modesty. Something like this: www.marksandspencer.com/waist-slip-with-cool-comfort-technology/p/p22125749#P60148397#Joined%20Line

If that looks OK when you try the two on together, go for it. Otherwise, no.

Glaciferous · 10/06/2018 22:15

Swimming costume is a genius idea, though! That would totally work.

whatyadoing · 10/06/2018 22:15

Don't think do is formal at all. Guys are supposed to be in Hawaiian shirts and shorts. What us women are supposed to be wearing begs Banagher though. I'll look like a twit. Fucks sake. What the hell can I wear!

OP posts:
Casmama · 10/06/2018 22:15

It looks like a beach coverup so why not wear it over a brightly covered bikini or swimming costume.
Don’t wear it over visible underwear or people will be cringing.

Atalune · 10/06/2018 22:16

No, not appropriate.

I would wear black wide wide leg culottes with a bold floral patterned little shell top. Big dangly earrings, wedge shoes and a raffia clutch.

CremeDeLaCrap · 10/06/2018 22:16

it looks like a nightie.

Glaciferous · 10/06/2018 22:17

Or just a normal slip and cut the straps off and attach at the top if you can find one short enough.

whatyadoing · 10/06/2018 22:17

Ok, I could possibly get a gaudy looking bikini for underneath and look like and even bigger twat.
Christ but I hate themed crap

OP posts:
Glaciferous · 10/06/2018 22:18

I do actually think it is a bit short for a work thing, though. Can't you just wear whatever bright summer dress you have and get some nice wedges or something to go with it?

Atalune · 10/06/2018 22:18

I would advise against wearing swimming stuff under.
I think that would be bonkers!

Glaciferous · 10/06/2018 22:18

NOT a bikini. That will look really attention-seeking and a bit odd.

MismatchedPJs · 10/06/2018 22:18

I don't know what I'd do with the theme either and you shouldn't have to buy stuff specially, but I would err on the side of going off-theme rather than going see-through, myself.

Anything plain to just showcase the necklace perhaps? Or a maxi dress or skirt with plain top and funky necklace?

NashvilleQueen · 10/06/2018 22:20

Denim shorts would be fine underneath and a bikini top. I’d avoid just that and nude underwear. Maybe a headscarf?

GrumpyOldMare · 10/06/2018 22:21

I agree with another poster,it does look like a nightie.
