Semi see-through dress to a work do

whatyadoing · 10/06/2018 22:08

No, I'm not entirely thick, but we have a work event on Thursday and the theme is Caribbean.

I bought this dress.
Unfortunately I only tried it on this evening and it's a little bit see-through.
I've nothing else to blooming wear for this god-damned themed crap. I've bought a colourful necklace yokeymebob for around my neck and will wear nude coloured underwear (still have to buy the knickers) but....
Would you completely re-think outfit? The fabric is quite thin...?

It wouldn't be appropriate for an event at my work regardless of theme but you know your own work environment best so you're probably the best judge of what's acceptable!

SteamTrainsRealAleandOpenFires · 10/06/2018 23:03

Opt for the male choice. Bin the dress, it’s tacky. Sorry.

I agree, fuck the "so-called" rules!

Have you got a pair of baggy jeans? If so, make a pair of Bermuda Shorts & wear a Bikini top underneath a big shirt.

What can your bosses do...sack you?.

fruitbrewhaha · 10/06/2018 23:04

No, you can't wear that. The clue was in the title OP, it's beach cover up, not a dress. It's short and see through.

Wear something brightly coloured. There's a few on the same sight with tropical in the title.

Wear it with your shorts. Although I don't see why you can't get something else. It's Sunday and if the event is in Chelmsford, you must be able to get next day ASOS delivery

FASH84 · 10/06/2018 23:10

What kind of company do you work for OP? If it's a bar or similar, put jean shorts and a boob tube underneath, if more of an office job maybe go for something else. Lots of shops in Chelmsford open until 6/6:30, later on Thursdays and the high street is awash with tropical print dresses and play suits.

NashvilleQueen · 10/06/2018 23:11

I went to a dreadful 80s themed event where some people dress up in keeping with the era. There was a man dressed as Mr T from the A Team who was blacked up. It was pretty shocking really. People do totally misjudge these things hence my reference to potential offence.

SoupDragon · 10/06/2018 23:13

The average bloke would take a Hawaiian shirt to wear on holiday in the caribbean so i really don't understand why people are getting their knickers in a twist

And a good number of the Antiguan men have been wearing “Hawaiian” shirts whenever I’ve visited.

SoupDragon · 10/06/2018 23:14

There are loads of bright “Caribbean” dresses in Primark at the moment. BRight floral sun dresses - short and long!

Ohyesiam · 10/06/2018 23:18

The high st is full of ott prints of pineapples etc at the moment. You have plenty of time to sort it.

Or don’t go?

WetsTheVet · 10/06/2018 23:19

Just wear a slip?

BitOutOfPractice · 10/06/2018 23:19

It's not a dress. It's a beach cover up to pop over a bikini while you go to the bar.

I loathe dress up events.

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 10/06/2018 23:20

Dress as a pirate.

BitOutOfPractice · 10/06/2018 23:22

It's not too late. Buy something online tonight and you'll have it Tuesday. Don't wear the whole cover up

MiddleMoffat · 10/06/2018 23:23

If you can't bend over without flashing your knickers, don't wear it.

bunbunny · 10/06/2018 23:26

Sainsburys have got loads of tropically/Caribbean-y stuff at the moment.

If you have one local to you, see if you can pick up a tropical top, equivalent of a bloke's Hawaiian shirt, put with white or black or block colour of bottoms (skirt, shorts, cut offs, jeans, trousers - depending on what you have and what the weather is going to be!) and you'll be comfortable at minimal expense. Or vice versa - get tropical bottom half, plain top half with your tropical necklace...

Have a look online tonight - if you ring your local store with clothes tomorrow morning, if you have the item number they are usually pretty good at checking to see if it is in stock and putting one by for you to pick up later on. The below give some idea - they don't have a very big selection online compared to what I saw in store today -

Go on, you know you want to...

Semi see-through dress to a work do
bsbabas · 10/06/2018 23:33

T-shirt halter neck and some shorts shiny tights and heels

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 10/06/2018 23:39

Agree. It's a beach cover up, not a dress. If the men are 'allowed' to wear shorts, then just wear shorts underneath.

No 'big hat' or 'statement necklace' is going to make that anything other than something to pop on over a bikini as you wander over to the beach bar.

KilledByHerOwnCardigan · 10/06/2018 23:39

Just wear a tank or bandeau under it, as well as shorts. Or even a one-piece swimsuit.

CaledonianQueen · 10/06/2018 23:58

Do you have any kaftans/ maxi dresses or wide leg cotton trousers? You must have summer clothes in your wardrobe, you don’t need to buy anything new, just a summer dress/ skirt or beach wear would be fine. Alternatively Next do next day delivery, you could get it delivered to your work?

NellMangel · 11/06/2018 00:04

Maxi dress with your flower garland. Flip flops.

HappenedForAReisling · 11/06/2018 00:06

If you lift your arms up you'll be showing your bum. Another vote for shorts or skirt underneath here

lhastingsmua · 11/06/2018 00:12

I mean at the low, low price of £11 you can always buy something different or wear something else in your wardrobe and save this one for a holiday?

If you’re after cheap dresses just check misguided, ASOS etc. They’re all fairly affordable and have a large range
