to not think I am overweight?

Afternoon all,

Currently undergoing some medical investigations but in the meantime my GP said I am "overweight and unhealthy" which is why I have a "large tummy". I thought being 8.5 stone (with a height of 5'4") wasn't anywhere near overweight - I am a size 6/8? And as for unhealthy, okay yes I have 3 cups of coffee a day but I eat easily 7-10 portions fruit/veg a day and rarely snack and generally avoid all fizzy drinks. Granted I don't domuch beyond mum duties but I do walk everywhere, but GP didn't ask about any of this.

Anyway she has told me to go on a diet and do more exercise.
I asked her recommendation on how to do that, through tears as it did hurt to hear how I am fat, but she just told me to cut down on what I eat and at least walk more.

Idk what I expect tbh! Just AIBU in thinking I am not overweight? I thought it was more of a bloating issue I had?

You have a mum tum. Your GP is a dick!

ShatnersBassoon · 04/06/2018 14:30

Has she weighed you, or is she just going on what looks to be a large tummy?

whymewhyme · 04/06/2018 14:30

You don't sound over weight! If I were you I'd put a complaint in and go to see another doctor.

BackToBeingMe · 04/06/2018 14:30

8st 5lbs is not over weight at 5ft 4, look for yourself on the NHS bmi calculator. Maybe her scale was broken of something was pressing on it why she was weighing you.

wonderings · 04/06/2018 14:30

You are definitely not overweight OP, how rude of her to suggest you are!
She's probably just used to fobbing everyone off with the same advice and has took no notice of your actual circumstances.

MyKingdomForBrie · 04/06/2018 14:31

Well no, you’re not overweight, but she would have to not even have passed an A level to have said that let alone have a medical degree and qualified as a GP, so I’d say there is some kind of misunderstanding here.

xLeanne128 · 04/06/2018 14:32

That is not overweight in the slightest!

xLeanne128 · 04/06/2018 14:34

How is a side 6/8 woman overweight I'm confused advice like that could cause serious damage and even an eating disorder. I think I'd be ringing up and asking to speak to the doctor to check what they said or making a complaint!

Floeer · 04/06/2018 14:36

ShatnersBassoon yeah she weighed me, made me stand on scales twice to check

MrsPMT · 04/06/2018 14:36

There's absolutely no way you are overweight, you're probably slimmer than most people. I'd see another GP.

What age is your child/children? Is the bloating a new thing? I get bloated certain times of the month so much that I look pregnant (and am much heavier than you are! Although still not overweight).

keyboardjellyfish · 04/06/2018 14:36

I just used the BMI calculator and your BMI is 20, which is right in the middle of healthy. You are absolutely not overweight. Honestly I would complain as the GP could be giving this advice out to everyone for no reason and it can be really damaging. Definetely see another GP if you can! Flowers

Floeer · 04/06/2018 14:37

Maybe there was a misunderstanding but I am not sure how else to take her words towards me, "overweight and unhealthy", in any other way?

OP posts:
Belindabauer · 04/06/2018 14:37

You are not overweight.
Ask to see a different gp if you are feeling concerned.

Floeer · 04/06/2018 14:38

MrsPMT my DS is 11 months old. Bloating has only been a problem for maybe past 2 months tops?

OP posts:
DuchyDuke · 04/06/2018 14:38

Are you black, Indian or SE Asian by any chance? If so, then being in the middle of a normal BMI range isn’t enough. You have to be on the lower end.

FadedRed · 04/06/2018 14:38

Definitely not overweight as in a BMI between 25-30, but if you have a large tummy, 'Apple' rather than 'pear' shape, then that can be a higher risk of medical problems. Worth looking at the NHS pages explaining the waist/hip size ration, which is a better indication than BMI alone.
Your GP should have explained this, did she weight you and check your height?

AnnieAnoniMouser · 04/06/2018 14:40

You’re not overweight.

Please go and see a different GP. It’s important.

Floeer · 04/06/2018 14:43

DuchyDuke nope I am white

FadedRed yupp she weighed me (twice).

Okay so I shall change my diet rather than go on a diet and in meantime switch GP surgeries too

OP posts:
Sofabitch · 04/06/2018 14:46

Don't change your diet.

Go to a different Gp and put in a complaint about your gp. a bloated stomach can be a sign of other health problems. Your gp spunds dangerously neglectful.

expatinscotland · 04/06/2018 14:46

I never let them weigh me anyhow. BMI is a shite means of measuring. Your GP is a lazy dick. I'd switch surgeries.

lalaloopyhead · 04/06/2018 14:47

Overweight?? No you are definitely not! I would imagine that your are actually very slim.

I am 5ft 3 (on a tall day) and the my very lightest weight as an adult has been 8st 3 and there was nothing on me.

Do you think you have a 'large tummy'? Is this part of the medical investigations?

I would ask to see someone else if I were you, your GP does not sound very good!

pissedonatrain · 04/06/2018 14:48

You are a perfect weight and eat quite healthy. The GP is delusional. Find another GP.

BlueBug45 · 04/06/2018 14:49

OP some health care professionals including doctors are just rude when they don't know what is wrong with you. I've suffered this from a GP and eventually ended up changing practices. The doctors at my present practice couldn't believe he could miss something so obvious.

expatinscotland · 04/06/2018 14:50

And yy, if you are bloated it needs to be checked out.

nellly · 04/06/2018 14:50

Could you be 'skinny fat'? One of my close friend is a size 8 but very soft iyswim. She doesn't do any exercise and almost exclusively eats carbs, the GP has recommended she start trying to do some exercise even though she's not overweight there's concern about her health long term?
