to not think I am overweight?

Afternoon all,

Currently undergoing some medical investigations but in the meantime my GP said I am "overweight and unhealthy" which is why I have a "large tummy". I thought being 8.5 stone (with a height of 5'4") wasn't anywhere near overweight - I am a size 6/8? And as for unhealthy, okay yes I have 3 cups of coffee a day but I eat easily 7-10 portions fruit/veg a day and rarely snack and generally avoid all fizzy drinks. Granted I don't domuch beyond mum duties but I do walk everywhere, but GP didn't ask about any of this.

Anyway she has told me to go on a diet and do more exercise.
I asked her recommendation on how to do that, through tears as it did hurt to hear how I am fat, but she just told me to cut down on what I eat and at least walk more.

Idk what I expect tbh! Just AIBU in thinking I am not overweight? I thought it was more of a bloating issue I had?

What is your waist and hip measurement? I am 5' 4", weight 8st 10lbs but my waist measurement is 33.5 inches. That classifies me as 'overweight' even though my BMI is 'normal' because I have fat around my middle.

Floeer · 04/06/2018 16:17

QueenoftheNights yes had a scan but no gynae appointment with it, just the GP talking through it. a letter was sent to the GP which said something about uterine lining being normal, left ovary normal and right ovary having follicule masses on it? GP then said it was likely my PCOS flaring up and explained I should have excess hair growth and acne too - I have none of these...

summerinrome · 04/06/2018 16:19

There is no way on gods earth you are remotely overweight!!!

I would see another GP for a second opinion and not see her again. She should be investigating the bloating not suggesting diets.

Floeer · 04/06/2018 16:19

sadie9 not sure what my hip measurement is.. waist is 25.5" though

OP posts:
Floeer · 04/06/2018 16:19

26.5* sorry!

You have a totally normal BMI. If she really said that then ignore - she is clearly wrong. Not worth getting upset over something that is so obviously bollocks.

NotTheQueen · 04/06/2018 16:26

Sod that, next doctor love!

Sometimes ‘weight’ is the default cause doctors latch onto, even when the evidence says otherwise. Given your weight, the doctors gone past clutching at straws and grasping thin air.

I had PCOS and inactive thyroid which took over a decade to diagnose but hey, we’ll just talk about the scale instead of doing any proper diagnosis.

Doctors, much like a plumber or hairdresser, are not infallible and you need to find a decent one you can trust and rely upon, so then you can fix what is really wrong with you.

GeoGirl94 · 04/06/2018 16:27

OP!! you are NOT overweight! i say this as a 5"3 woman, who weighs 9.4 stone- I'm still considered as having a healthy BMI, and when i raised my weight with my consultant (have long term condition that means i have to watch my weight etc) he was very pleased with it and told me i was healthy! recommend change GP! ive had this with a cousin who was malnoorusihed due to her ed and the twat told her she had a tum and to exercise more.that there was too much fat roun the middle.she clearly had no idea and was reaind ghte sheet rather than looking what was riht in front of the bitch.
I was seethin.and it sent my cousin into a tailspin of relapsing.
remind yourself of logic.dont let the words send you into fear and self loathing.what is the badness in the word fat anyway.remember to behind this word is all we as a society has given to it.
you are you.more than weight.you poorly with a bloated tummy perhaps but apart from you there is more to you than weight.focus back onto that.you have anew born idd you say?how amazing is that.
fat you are not.and even if you were so fecking what in the scheme of things you need kindness to sort those issues not cruel jibing like the doc did.youd need guidance and support.
but do you think your unhealthy.could u need to do some walking with the dc or eat more healthier.but even then from the sound of it you mention how you eat all the fruit and veg so I cant see the problems there either
so basically put this moment down to a rathr twaitsh dream in time on which you shouldn't dwell on.go on to look aftr yourself the best you can.be healthy be mindful be kind to yoruself

Wow this doctor sounds so dismissive, rude and, well, wrong!

Definitely ask for a referral

MikeUniformMike · 04/06/2018 16:38

I am about the same height and weight as you OP. I am quite a sturdy build but not overweight. I could lose a few pounds and tone up.

What did you weigh before you were pregnant? If you weigh a significant amount more, maybe you are overweight - perhaps you are very slightly built. Doctors will tut over a weight gain of a few lbs. I would ask to see a different GP, one who you feel more at ease with.

I hope you get it sorted.

Floeer · 04/06/2018 16:42

MikeUniformMike weigh the same as pre-pregnancy now. Initially post-pregnancy I was a stone heavier than pre-pregnancy but I lost it within 2 months with exercise

expatinscotland · 04/06/2018 16:44

It doesn't matter what your waist size is because the problem is that you have masses on your ovary and these need to be explored before any concerns about weight or waist size or BMI is addressed.

Please see another GP and ask for a gynae referral.

It's not on to just fob you off like this.

Not on at all.

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 04/06/2018 16:47

Your GP sounds dangerously incompetent. A second opinion is urgently needed - that ovarian mass needs checked out.

MikeUniformMike · 04/06/2018 16:49

If the GP had told me I was overweight I'd have given her a piece of my mind. Find another GP.

Devon123 · 04/06/2018 16:50

What the hell! How can a size 6/8 be over weight. Don't take it to heart

Peanutbuttercups21 · 04/06/2018 16:50

bloating and unspecified "masses" does not mean you need to lose weight, it means the doc should investigate what's wrong!

MikeUniformMike · 04/06/2018 16:52

You exercise and don't appear to be overweight to anyone but this GP. You have a medical condition that is under investigation/needs investigating. You need to see a GP you have confidence in.
Best wishes.FlowersFlowers

Thank you everyone, I thought maybe I was being delusional or something!

I might actually just go private, I have lost a lot of faith in NHS GPs over past few years; they cant be totally blamed though as I do appreciate they are under a lot of pressure.

@Floeer Reading scans takes an expert. You ought to have your scan looked at by a specialist- it's not clear if you did..?
I am always surprised at the difference there is (shown on forums like this) between who does a scan and reads it.

If it was a technician ( a radiographer) they are not as well qualified as a radiologist or a gynae. A mass ought to be investigated and further action taken.

I had an ovarian cyst in my 50s. It was discovered by accident during a routine scan/ health MOT. My consultant arranged scans every 4 months for 2 years to check it- it did go away in time. My scans were done by a consultant radiologist with 40 years' experience.

This is called 'watchful waiting'.

If you have never had a diagnosis of PCOS they can't assume this is what those follicles are. You need to push for further tests or a more thorough explanation.

kateandme · 04/06/2018 17:02

dr seem to have so many tick boxes or go to illness to "sort" "highlight" and most of them revolve around weight.
in reailty making people feel like shit.
how has belittling people body image and esteem ever helped people choose a better lifestyle for themselves.

Floeer · 04/06/2018 17:08

QueenoftheNights I was told I had PCOS in my late teens but these past couple months I haven't had any of the symptoms of PCOS I did back then, in fact my periods have been regular and my skin never so clear of acne! I feel like maybe my GP is just tying it to that without properly considering anything more. She did send me off for a full STI check, which all came back (unsurprisingly) negative. Maybe as I am only 24 she doesn't think it can be anything sinister?

kateandme fair enough if it is my weight, and I do have a weight issue. Just be nice if GP could give me some advice on how to sort out my belly weight.

OP posts:
maxthemartian · 04/06/2018 17:11

You don't have a weight issue though.

expatinscotland · 04/06/2018 17:12

It really needs further exploration not just 'you are overweight, lose weight'.
