to not think I am overweight?

Afternoon all,

Currently undergoing some medical investigations but in the meantime my GP said I am "overweight and unhealthy" which is why I have a "large tummy". I thought being 8.5 stone (with a height of 5'4") wasn't anywhere near overweight - I am a size 6/8? And as for unhealthy, okay yes I have 3 cups of coffee a day but I eat easily 7-10 portions fruit/veg a day and rarely snack and generally avoid all fizzy drinks. Granted I don't domuch beyond mum duties but I do walk everywhere, but GP didn't ask about any of this.

Anyway she has told me to go on a diet and do more exercise.
I asked her recommendation on how to do that, through tears as it did hurt to hear how I am fat, but she just told me to cut down on what I eat and at least walk more.

Idk what I expect tbh! Just AIBU in thinking I am not overweight? I thought it was more of a bloating issue I had?

lalaloopyhead I originally went in with pelvic pain, bloating, frequent urination and a leaky boob. They have done an ultrasound sound on my pelvic area and found masses on one ovary and my GP said it is all most likely PCOS related and to go on a diet because I am overweight and unhealthy which is most likely causing these symptoms.

nellly If my GP said that to me or at least advised on what exactly I should be doing then that would be far enough - all she offered though was to "cut down on what I east and walk more". TBF I could be skinny fat, I certainly don't do any where near the amount of exercise I did pre pregnancy, used to be pretty fit and toned.

That is neglectful and dangerous. You need further explorations not just 'likely PCOS' or go on a diet. You are not overweight.

HollowTalk · 04/06/2018 14:53

I would go back to see a different doctor as a matter of urgency, OP. You're not overweight and your symptoms can be quite worrying. Can you see if you can make an appointment with a different doctor this evening?

BlessYawnBless · 04/06/2018 14:53

I just read this thread and was going to say exactly what Expat said.
Go to another GP.

expatinscotland · 04/06/2018 14:54

You're not skinny fat. Your symptoms are confined to your pelvic area. 'Likely PCOS' for masses on your ovary is not good enough.

MrsPMT · 04/06/2018 14:55

Did you question the GP when she/he said you were overweight?
I've read that PCOS is helped by being a healthy weight, but you are!

Definitely see another GP.

Trooperslane2 · 04/06/2018 14:55

Bloat does not = overweight.

I am the same height, weight and BMI as you -- and I am definitely, definitely not overweight. I've lost weight very fast due to illness, but if anything I'd like to put a bit on. I'm too old to be skinny.

Agree with bloat needing to be checked, but you are not over weight by anyone's standards. Unless you are 4!

IamXXHearMeRoar · 04/06/2018 14:56

Second opinion - urgently.

Floeer · 04/06/2018 14:56

MrsPMT I did question yes, I showed her my arm but she said my belly suggested otherwise...

So I shall be booking in with another GP then

Change drs or if you can't see if they have a nurse lead weight loss clinic.I think a nurseay get you answers the Dr can't as she will know that you aren't overweight but if you so this you are in a position to pester your Dr about the bloating.

StormTreader · 04/06/2018 14:58

I would be asking to see someone else.
8 1/2 stones at 5' 4" puts you at a BMI of 20.4, on the official NHS checker tool your healthy weight range is from 7 3/4 to 10 1/2 stones.

Sounds rather like this is a doctor who has no idea what shes talking about.

HarryLovesDraco · 04/06/2018 14:58

Are you black, Indian or SE Asian by any chance? If so, then being in the middle of a normal BMI range isn’t enough. You have to be on the lower end

Eh?

Did your GP actually say you are overweight and unhealthy in those words? I have never had a GP or nurse say anything like that to me even when discussing the pill, where my weight is relevant, and when I am in fact overweight.

If she actually said that, you must complain. She's off her head.

Ginkypig · 04/06/2018 14:58

The newest rule that is popular now is is to do with the waistline.

The basics are I think your waist should be less than half your height.
More than that shows an unhealthy amount of fat around the visceral organs which is the most dangerous as studies now show the chances of things like stroke and heart-attacks jump the bigger the waist is.

All that being said though if you don't fit into that category and it doesn't sound like you do then the gp sounds horrible! I'd be tempted to complain if for no other reason than to make sure others don't get treated the same!

StormTreader · 04/06/2018 14:58

Also, a bloated stomach but otherwise thin can be indicative of ovarian cancer.

expatinscotland · 04/06/2018 14:59

I would actually complain about this one. She dismissed masses on your ovary and that shouldn't be. You need further exploration. She fobbed you off and what she did could be dangerous. You are not skinny fat, or overweight or 'large tummy', you're bloated abnormally, have masses on one ovary and something's enlarged so that it's pressing on your bladder and causing frequent urination.

Even if it is PCOS, your blood sugar needs assessed.

Onlyoldontheoutside · 04/06/2018 14:59

Also there would be a lot of happy women if pcos could be sorted with a diet.

BlessYawnBless · 04/06/2018 15:00

Yes you need to see another GP and make an appointment as a matter or urgency.

hungryhippo90 · 04/06/2018 15:02

Please do not listen to her. Can I just say, I have PCOS, they didn’t try to help me until I got massive. I have still never been spoken to the way that you were. I weigh over double what you do.

I’m not saying go ahead and pile on the weight, but what I am saying is it doesn’t sound like there’s anything wrong with you and you certainly shouldn’t have been spoken to that way

Aridane · 04/06/2018 15:02

Did she say overweight / go on a diet or to eat a healthier diet and exercise more? As clearly your BMI is very good

foodtime · 04/06/2018 15:03

Are you black, Indian or SE Asian by any chance? If so, then being in the middle of a normal BMI range isn’t enough. You have to be on the lower end.

Please don’t spread nonsense and false information on the internet.
I am a GP and that is just simply not true Hmm There’s enough shit out there without adding to it.

Abitlost2015 · 04/06/2018 15:03

OP if what you have written is all the information that has been given to you please ring the practice and ask to speak to the practice manager. Explain with the ultrasound results you have the advice you have been given. You need a second opinion and the GP needs to reflect.

FadedRed · 04/06/2018 15:03

Ask to be referred to Gynaecologist ASAP, Op.
'Masses on your ovary' should not be dismissed as PCOS without a positive diagnosis, usually by laparoscopy and biopsy.
