to not think I am overweight?

Afternoon all,

Currently undergoing some medical investigations but in the meantime my GP said I am "overweight and unhealthy" which is why I have a "large tummy". I thought being 8.5 stone (with a height of 5'4") wasn't anywhere near overweight - I am a size 6/8? And as for unhealthy, okay yes I have 3 cups of coffee a day but I eat easily 7-10 portions fruit/veg a day and rarely snack and generally avoid all fizzy drinks. Granted I don't domuch beyond mum duties but I do walk everywhere, but GP didn't ask about any of this.

Anyway she has told me to go on a diet and do more exercise.
I asked her recommendation on how to do that, through tears as it did hurt to hear how I am fat, but she just told me to cut down on what I eat and at least walk more.

Idk what I expect tbh! Just AIBU in thinking I am not overweight? I thought it was more of a bloating issue I had?

PCOS should look like lots of small cysts, not "a mass"! You're obviously not overweight, your symptoms could be something worrying. Please, please do see someone else. This GP is a neglectful arse, and I'm so sorry you had to cross paths with her! Flowers

Jozxyqk · 04/06/2018 15:08

I'd speak with the practice manager as you appear to be a normal weight, the GP is giving very poor advice. I'd also switch to another GP or surgery.

Ginkypig · 04/06/2018 15:10

Also I missed the bloating Blush

That changes things! There was a very sad thread thread on here about an amazing woman who was thin except for a bloated stomach, it turned out to be advanced ovarian cancer. The thread followed her story from before the gp appointment to diagnose then treatment and beyond.

Don't leave this. You went to the gp for a reason don't forget that.

Battleax · 04/06/2018 15:13

Maybe there was a misunderstanding but I am not sure how else to take her words towards me, "overweight and unhealthy", in any other way?

Of course it wasn’t a misunderstanding, lovely.

It was a rubbish doctor. They do exist.

20brilliantcolours · 04/06/2018 15:13

Yanbu

TroubledLichen · 04/06/2018 15:13

I’d complain to the practice manager. You’re on the lower end of the healthy BMI range so:
The GP is lying when they say you’re overweight.
If you lost more than a few pounds you’d be classed as underweight so the GP is giving dangerous advice.
The GP is ignoring the medical problems that caused you to book the appointment in the first place.

Also, go and see another doctor as soon as possible.

FizzyGreenWater · 04/06/2018 15:14

Wow, I'd change GPs and let the practice manager know exactly why.

maxthemartian · 04/06/2018 15:16

You need to get a second opinion urgently. Given your symptoms and the mass on your ovary, you might possibly have ovarian cancer.

You're clearly not remotely overweight with the BMI of 20 so that is just nonsense.

This woman's rudeness and incompetence may kill you!

LouiseEH · 04/06/2018 15:19

I’m 5”3 and a lot heavier than you right now but I’m hoping to go down to about your weight as it’s a healthy one, you’re GP is wrong and I would recommend seeing a different one in future.

PerryPerryThePlatypus · 04/06/2018 15:20

Not meaning to alarm you but I agree that you need a second opinion asap.

PatienceIsAVirtue1 · 04/06/2018 15:30

That's my weight and height, I hope I'm not overweight (I don't think I look it?) yes, please don't listen to her or get upset. You sound perfectly healthy and have a good diet.

PatienceIsAVirtue1 · 04/06/2018 15:32

Yes, forgot to mention, definitely get second opinion on bloating. It could be a food intolerance ? I know someone allergic to gluten - when they eat it, they bloat an awful lot. Hopefully you'll find a better, more understanding doctor.

CoraPirbright · 04/06/2018 15:34

Change GPs asap and get a second opinion. PLease. Utter nonsense that you are overweight (I am an inch taller and have 2.5 stone on you!! And whilst I could do with losing a stone, I am not really fat). She sounds seriously like she doesnt know what she is talking about and is dismissive of what could be a serious problem.

ElsieMc · 04/06/2018 15:38

Well that has shocked me op. I am 5 ft 4 and just gone under 9 stone to around 8st 12lbs. Feeling quite smug with myself, but obviously not. You are very light indeed op.

The only time I have heard anything like this was a similar height colleague being told her target weight was 8 stone 4 lbs at weight watchers. She was around 10.5 at the time and was shocked. She went down to 9 stone and looked good at this weight, certainly slim. Never heard anything like it from a gp and mine is hot on this issue.

DerelictWreck · 04/06/2018 15:40

Sounds like ovarian cysts to me OP, classic symptoms (I have them at the moment).

Definitely get a second opinion and ask for a gynae referral (although if you've had scans I'm guessing you've been seen by one?)

UserThenLotsOfNumbers · 04/06/2018 15:41

What a horrible and inaccurate thing for the GP to say.
OP, if you are overweight then I am morbidly obese!!!
I'm the same height as you and when I looked at the NHS BMI calculator I'm pretty sure 8 1/2 stone was in the middle of the "normal" range?

GinnyWreckin · 04/06/2018 15:41

Another person saying you need an URGENT appointment with a new GP with a view to assessing if you have ovarian cancer. You need a consultant appointment.
DON’T be fobbed off. Being your partner or a friend for support.

So sorry you were sent on a wild goose chase by that crap GP.
I’d make a complaint.

I hope you’re feeling much better soon.

raisedbyguineapigs · 04/06/2018 15:45

food time Is that not true then? I'm Asian descent with a high genetic predisposition to diabetes and I was told I had to be max 22 BMI which I'm finding a mountain to climb!

BurpeesAreTheWorkOfTheDevil · 04/06/2018 15:45

I'm not a medical professional but I am a fitness professional with qualifications in diet and nutrition aswell as the gym instructor and pt qualifications.

The stats you have given aren't overweight, that's healthy weight.

I would be asking about intolerances and stomach problems if you hadn't mentioned the mass, if it was just bloating.

If you came to me for advice I would refer you back to the Dr because it doesn't sound like a weight/fitness problem it sounds like a medical problem and I would be asking for a letter from your dr to check you are able to exercise based on the answers you would give on my participation questionnaire.

Floeer · 04/06/2018 15:49

DerelictWreck a different GP referred me for the scan, haven't see a gynae

GinnyWreckin yeah I wish I took my DH now! Shall do next time

hmcAsWas · 04/06/2018 15:53

Jesus - I can't believe that doctor! Please do complain about them - they sound dangerous!

Glad you are making another appointment - don't be fobbed off

getupdressandshowup · 04/06/2018 15:56

Your BMI is perfectly within the 'normal' bracket. I'm 5 ft 2 inches and weight 8 st 13.5lbs. Your weight less than i do and you're taller than me.

Your doctor needs some re-training on his/her bedside manner.

If you feel comfortable then do not worry.

QueenoftheNights · 04/06/2018 16:00

You have had a s can? Has a consultant gynae looked at the results? Did they say it looked like PCOS? Or is your GP assuming? A scan comes with a report. If not, you need another scan and a follow up appt with a gynae.

Ovarian cancer is rare in women under 40 but not unheard of. You need to assume it could be until proved otherwise as you have many of the symptoms.Better safe than sorry.

aaronburr · 04/06/2018 16:00

Utterly ridiculous. I am shorter than you at 5'3" and when I've been 8.5 stone I've actually started to look a little gaunt. I know people carry weight differently but there is no way on earth you can be overweight.

Please see a different GP.

Pippylou · 04/06/2018 16:01

Could be a hernia, constipation, diastatis recti, all sorts.

I had a massive fight with my GP about weight but I was sort nearly 2 of you! :-)
