DH's no 'pooing....

Mammyofonlyone · 01/06/2018 06:56

DH has decided to try the no 'poo approach to hair care. Someone at work has told him it is 'meant to make your hair hold its stills better' or some such.
However, he has never been particularly fussed about his hair - we are not really a typically 'trend' driven family - and he has a standard men's style short crop. I should add he does have lovely thick healthy (albeit a bit grey now!) hair.
Obviously it up to him what he does with his hair but my issue is thus: in under one week his pillow case has gone from white to a gross yellowy brown! He has a special pillow to support his neck for which I have more than one cover but I'm not convinced Ill get them anywhere close to being white again when I wash them.
Apparently he is continuing to apply his styling product everyday - surely there is no need and eventually he'll end up with more wax than hair if he applies it every day and never washes it out?!?
I get the virtues of no poo in general but surely his is more aimed at people with longer hair where the condition is more evident?????
AIBU to want him to just wash his hair as he used to everyday??

Yeah, I’m pretty sure no poo also means no product, or at least no synthetic gloop that won’t naturally work itself out as you brush/preen.

Ick @ the pillow.

TheMaddHugger · 01/06/2018 07:07

no 'Poo' doesn't mean no cleaning your hair. When I do a no shampoo session I use bicarb soda in my conditioner. It cleans very well.

MissionItsPossible · 01/06/2018 07:07

I know you didn’t make the term up OP but to whoever did, is it really a big effort to write/type/say the word sham!?

DinoGreen · 01/06/2018 07:08

Yes if he’s continuing to use wax etc it’s gross. My DH hasn’t used shampoo in about a year now and his hair looks and smells great. He doesn’t put any products in it though.

TheMaddHugger · 01/06/2018 07:09

sorry Hit post too quick.

Wet hair. Lather up with conditioner. scrub well, then rinse out. Repeat.
Some people never use Shampoo. An simply clean their hair with Conditioner

Pinktails · 01/06/2018 07:09

Oh, poo means sham poo? Grin

Mamimawr · 01/06/2018 07:11

I haven't used shampoo for a few years now - but I wash my hair everyday!! How has he got this so wrong?? I'd refuse to wash his pillowcase, and there is no way I'd sleep in the same bed as him!

Believeitornot · 01/06/2018 07:11

No poo doesn’t mean no cleaning!

TheMaddHugger · 01/06/2018 07:11

Some people only wash their hair in plain water. The hair does adjust eventually.

Mammyofonlyone · 01/06/2018 07:15

Mission hahaha very good point

Everyone else, thank you, I'm pleased it's not just me. He often makes out I'm neurotic about things like this - 'why does it really matter? Who ever comes into our room to check our pillows?'
I'm coming more from the 'err, it doesn't matter it's rank' school of thought

No poo doesn’t mean no cleaning!

Anniegetyourgun · 01/06/2018 07:22

Who ever comes into our room to check our pillows?

Er, you do! Are you not a person?

ipswichwitch · 01/06/2018 07:26

Surely I’m not the only one reading this and wondering why on Earth refusing to have a shit is going to make his hair look better? Anyone?

RainbowFairiesHaveNoPlot · 01/06/2018 07:28

Who ever comes into our room to check our pillows?

Simple response here - if he buggers up matching pillowcase and duvet sets - he'll be buying the replacements.

Slightly disappointed this thread isn't about the usual MN neurotic shit in appropriate toilets at preordained times arrangements though.

LoislovesStewie · 01/06/2018 07:29

I was confused too, I thought his bowels will be in state!

GummyGoddess · 01/06/2018 07:31

My hair gets washed once a week with conditioner only. After washing it gets ONE lot of products in and they last until the next wash. He can't apply stuff every day without doing something, especially wax! You'll never get wax out without shampoo and it will have daily dirt just sticking to it.

Pinktails · 01/06/2018 07:31

@ipswichwitch Nope you're not alone - I'm still not sure either tbh

wowfudge · 01/06/2018 07:31

The OP used an apostrophe correctly to replace the missing letters.

sendthecoffee · 01/06/2018 07:33

If you have curly hair you're advised not to use shampoo. I use only
Conditioner to wash my hair and it looks better than ever

Pebblesandsea · 01/06/2018 07:40

There was a very interesting discussion on Radio 4 re this. A leading trichologist said that going without washing hair this was not a good idea due to bacteria thriving on the scalp.

She also blew out of the water the myth that washing your hair every day was bad for it. She said that everybody's hair structure is different and yes, some people should wash their hair everyday as the grease spreads easily and starts to smell but other people due to type and density of hair could just be washed once a week and it would be fine.....

Candyflip · 01/06/2018 07:40

What does “hold its stills better” mean?

Candyflip · 01/06/2018 07:42

Oh styles? What styles does your DH go for then? 😂

IIIustriousIyIIlogical · 01/06/2018 07:45

I wash my hair every day in plain water, haven't used shampoo/conditioner for over a year.

My pillow isn't yellow though - he should be washing the product out otherwise his hair will be getting more & more layers on it & just get ickier....

DisturblinglyOrangeScrambleEgg · 01/06/2018 07:51

This is like the lady in the Daily mail who tried 'no poo' but kept applying various products and dry shampoos every day, and wondered why she ended up with a matted itchy mess...

Having said this, I've found no poo with bicarb doesn't work in hard water areas, but in soft water it's fantastic. I'm in hard water now, but thanks to a few years of no poo in soft water I only need to wash my hair every 3 or 4 days (previously it was greasy by evening)

sexnotgender · 01/06/2018 07:51

I no poo as I follow the curly girl method.

I still wet and condition my hair daily. I use my conditioner like a shampoo.
