DH's no 'pooing....

Mammyofonlyone · 01/06/2018 06:56

DH has decided to try the no 'poo approach to hair care. Someone at work has told him it is 'meant to make your hair hold its stills better' or some such.
However, he has never been particularly fussed about his hair - we are not really a typically 'trend' driven family - and he has a standard men's style short crop. I should add he does have lovely thick healthy (albeit a bit grey now!) hair.
Obviously it up to him what he does with his hair but my issue is thus: in under one week his pillow case has gone from white to a gross yellowy brown! He has a special pillow to support his neck for which I have more than one cover but I'm not convinced Ill get them anywhere close to being white again when I wash them.
Apparently he is continuing to apply his styling product everyday - surely there is no need and eventually he'll end up with more wax than hair if he applies it every day and never washes it out?!?
I get the virtues of no poo in general but surely his is more aimed at people with longer hair where the condition is more evident?????
AIBU to want him to just wash his hair as he used to everyday??

Their are websites that tell you which products are suited to this method. Some products need shampoo to get them out - otherwise it will just build up. It sounds manky. Get him to research this properly if he insists on continuing

ipswichwitch · 01/06/2018 07:56

The OP used an apostrophe correctly to replace the missing letters.
So she did, but on first reading I hadn’t noticed - clearly I haven’t had enough coffee yet. Can’t understand why people keep shortening perfectly good words though, you’re not gonna save that much time by not typing “sham” first.
I need more coffee....

LoveInTokyo · 01/06/2018 07:57

I think your husband has misunderstood what “no poo” means. It doesn’t mean you don’t wash your hair. It means you don’t use sulphate based shampoo to wash your hair. You also have to stop using any products with silicones or any non water soluble ingredients in otherwise it won’t work.

Tinkobell · 01/06/2018 07:58

He will just get a smelly head. Men exude head wiff. Yuck

Tabathatwitchett · 01/06/2018 08:00

ipswich. I'm with you. I was trying to work out how not pooing would impact a pillow...

BlueBug45 · 01/06/2018 08:04

First person I met who no pooed was a guy at university ovef 20 years ago. He didn't conditioner wash either. He irregularly used gel in his hair which washed out with water. His curly hair didn't smell, was soft and well conditioned.

Other people I've met conditioner wash and use more styling products but not water insoluble ones.

OP I suggest you get your DP to read up on the method online or buy the curly girl book, plus buy you new bedding. His hair shouldn't stink or leave marks on bedding.

Candyflip · 01/06/2018 08:06

men exude hair whiff 😂😂

InspMorse · 01/06/2018 08:08

Back in the '80s this was a thing - Although to be fair, nobody was irritating enough to call it 'no 'pooing'.
The aim was to create dreadlocks. Several of my male friends had them - matted, smelly hair. It was gross.

ineedaholidaynow · 01/06/2018 08:09

I've never heard of this either and wondered what the thread would be about Blush

Troels · 01/06/2018 08:10

Gotta agree with everyone here, no poo doesn't mean you don't wash your hair. I've been no poo for something like 15 years, I still "wash" my hair daily in the shower, I use a coconut conditioner, mine is never greasy I have to add oil sometimes leaving it on overnight.

Faroutbrussel · 01/06/2018 08:10

DH has not shampooed his hair in 15 years, he does shower everday though so hair gets a wash and he doesn’t use products either. Based on this I have never washed DS hair with shampoo either, he is 6 and has lovely clean non smelly hair.

MigGril · 01/06/2018 08:13

Oh can someone tell.me the curly girl method. I have curly hair and sometimes it's totally unmanageable. I'd love it to be more controlled. Thanks.

CrispbuttyNo1 · 01/06/2018 08:14

I’ve never heard of this term either. I thought it was something to do with constipation Confused

LEMtheoriginal · 01/06/2018 08:16

So why is conditioner ok and shampoo not? Genuine question. I find if I leave my hair longer between washes it's nicer when it's washed bit my hair gets greasy quickly

museumum · 01/06/2018 08:17

Washing with conditioner (no poo) also requires careful choosing of the right conditioners and styling products so they don’t build up - silicones are to be avoided and all products should be water soluble.

Tell him that no poo only works with “curly girl friendly” conditioner and products. You can search for these online using that term.

Juells · 01/06/2018 08:20

Why not stop washing the pillowcase as well? Let the gunk all build up on it if he thinks it doesn't matter. Grin

ToffeePennie · 01/06/2018 08:21

Here’s a tip for getting the pillow white again, soak it overnight in scalding hot water, with a scoop of any brand of white stain remover powder. Wash it the next day on a 60 degree wash with no powder, just more vanish stuff and a touch of a white fabric softener. I sympathise with the pillow colour thing because unfortunately my husband does the same thing - every single white pillow in our house has gone a dirty yellow-brown.
However, my husband gets a shower twice a day and washes his scalp both times. He is a sweaty man, though and no amount of cleaner/cleanser and washing will help!

InspMorse · 01/06/2018 08:23

Handy if you want '80s/'90s festival hair... It is festival season after all Smile

DH's no 'pooing....
Ohmydayslove · 01/06/2018 08:23

Sounds grim

wibblywobblyfish · 01/06/2018 08:25

I have long thick hair and I only need to wash it once every 5 days. I do use shampoo though, I don't get why you wouldn't?

Belindabauer · 01/06/2018 08:26

I also thought this was you going to be a thread about constipation.

Sounds gross.

Usernameunknown2 · 01/06/2018 08:26

I must admit i read the title, thought it meant no shitting somewhere then skimmed the OP to see the manky pillow bit. I had to go back and reread Grin

Seems strange to use wax as well. Surely no shampoo making it hold better is holding better without other help? Sounds grim with wax in there, he needs to wash his hair with water at least!

thegreylady · 01/06/2018 08:28

I thought it meant that not pooing made your hair nicer! Has he tried washing up liquid?

Nanny0gg · 01/06/2018 08:29

You can't clean/wash your hair with conditioner. There aren't any cleaning products in it

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 01/06/2018 08:34

Sounds rancid.

He needs biological washing powder to save his pillowcase, and shampoo to save his marriage.
