DH's no 'pooing....

Mammyofonlyone · 01/06/2018 06:56

DH has decided to try the no 'poo approach to hair care. Someone at work has told him it is 'meant to make your hair hold its stills better' or some such.
However, he has never been particularly fussed about his hair - we are not really a typically 'trend' driven family - and he has a standard men's style short crop. I should add he does have lovely thick healthy (albeit a bit grey now!) hair.
Obviously it up to him what he does with his hair but my issue is thus: in under one week his pillow case has gone from white to a gross yellowy brown! He has a special pillow to support his neck for which I have more than one cover but I'm not convinced Ill get them anywhere close to being white again when I wash them.
Apparently he is continuing to apply his styling product everyday - surely there is no need and eventually he'll end up with more wax than hair if he applies it every day and never washes it out?!?
I get the virtues of no poo in general but surely his is more aimed at people with longer hair where the condition is more evident?????
AIBU to want him to just wash his hair as he used to everyday??

Emma - because it works on my hair. My before and after is ridiculous; how much better it looks

Emmasmum2013 · 01/06/2018 10:11

@Ollivander84 that's cool, I know some products just don't work for some and other's do. I'm all for those who avoid shampoo and clean with conditioner instead.. absolutely nothing wrong with that at all.. but those who insist on it because they think that the ingredients are somehow harmful is illogical. There's no evidence to support it.

My dh hasn't used shampoo or anything on his hair since we met in 1993. No probs at all. He rinses it daily in the shower but that's it. If done properly and you have the right hair and scalp type it's not dirty. But if he's using products he'll need to clear them with shampoo or they are just dirt traps and they will build up and look rank. No poo, no products.

NevermindMyMind · 01/06/2018 10:28

Emmasmum2013

Actually for my curly/afro hair there is all the evidence and lots of curlies. I don't think they're harmful as such, just not helpful, especially not on damaged hair.

kaytee87 · 01/06/2018 10:31

So basically he's just being a dirty bugger that can't be bothered washing his hair?
Tell him that it smells and you don't want to share a bed with him any longer.

BlueJava · 01/06/2018 10:49

Rank! If my DP did that he'd be on his own in the spare room with plastic for a pillowcase! :) Luckily he's a super-clean sort of guy!

Emmasmum2013 · 01/06/2018 10:55

@NevermindMyMind I find it really interesting and would love to read more if you could point me to a good source? As far as I know, the sebum produced by your scalp has no moisturising properties. It may make hair appear shinier at first and help to keep curls separate, but I can’t find any evidence to suggest that silicone and sulphates damage the hair or would make damaged hair even worse. The only thing I can think that would cause this with regular washing (and that’s with anything, shampoo or otherwise) would be the styling done after the hair is washed.

Emmasmum2013 · 01/06/2018 10:56

@Ollivander84 your hair looks gorgeous!!

Ollivander84 · 01/06/2018 10:58

As far as I know the silicones coat the hair so you need the sulphates to remove it. So it's not actually moisturising the hair as such
One wash with normal shampoo and my hair feels like straw
If you don't need to get the silicones off, the conditioner works because the gel etc I use is water soluble

lemonsunshinecake · 01/06/2018 11:03

Shampoo isn't that difficult to type OP

Ollivander84 · 01/06/2018 11:08

lemon - it's been known as no poo for years! It's not the OP inventing it

bobstersmum · 01/06/2018 11:47

I was totally lost and the dirty pillow further lost me. I'm so glad poo means shampoo!

PragmaticWench · 01/06/2018 12:03

@Ollivander84 how long did it take for your hair to adjust from your first picture to the second?

Ollivander84 · 01/06/2018 12:07

Pragmatic - not long actually, I noticed a difference within weeks and not shampooed for over a year

KnownUnknowns · 01/06/2018 12:11

I no-poo too and the results are great - I sometimes wash my hair with soap to remove product but never detergent based shampoo.

MrsFezziwig · 01/06/2018 12:18

Why would anyone shorten a not particularly long word so it gets confused with another word? Are we toddlers?

Mammyofonlyone · 01/06/2018 21:24

I've just broken it to him that the principle is that you don't use product everyday. I got a much better reaction that I'd hoped for. Initially he said he'd just buy new pillows every week (FFS!!! And this is from someone who has never cared about trends)!!!!
Hopefully he may listen and not use the clay wax stuff

I do the curly girl method and my hair is so much different now. It was just frizz before and now it's curls! I went away recently and used normal shampoo and conditioner and got instant frizz to the point that even others noticed.

I don't know how it works but it really does.

Jamiefraserskilt · 01/06/2018 21:32

Hideous. No poo means no product either. This time of year sweaty heads are evident.
Bowl of boiling water, two Milton sterilizing tablets, four hours soak and you pillow covers should come up.
Then send him into the shower and tell him to wash the bloody muck out.

Maelstrop · 01/06/2018 21:37

@InspMorse my grandad was chief stylist in the John Lewis in my home town, he says you can use Fairy Liquid (other brands are available!) or anything you like, as long as you rinse thoroughly.

I’m a no shampoo curly person, but rinse and only use conditioner as a styling product. Your dh is BU to use wax t9 style then not wash it out properly. Wax is impossible to get out without hot water and soap in some form.

My dad puts a towel on the pillow when he stays her, otherwise he leaves a stain on the pillowcase, he doesn’t use products, he’s just got a rank head! He does shampoo regularly.

Ollivander84 · 01/06/2018 21:38

Mammy - he can use product every day but water soluble ones! Send him over to Facebook to join the curly crew group

Mammyofonlyone · 01/06/2018 22:31

Thx ollivander, will do

I'm sure someone has said this already but drying whites in the sun does a top bleaching job - I've had sweat stains vanish from mattress protectors and tomato sauce stains from t-shorts etc.

babyno5 · 02/06/2018 18:50

ipswichwitch yep I’m with you! I was intrigued how you could actually stop yourself pooing!!
